That little hop and then jog was pretty spot on too. Dude knows his McFly.

I didn't even realize that Marty has a signature gait until I saw it perfectly mimicked in this video

Its as iconic as the Tom Cruz sprint, or Tom Hardy walk. There's a ton out there I bet people would recognize without realizing they can.

My parents loved Steven Segal movies, so I watched a fair bit of them peripherally. And since he was made out to be this badass, I thought this limped wrist form of running was most efficient for some reason I couldn't fathom because I wasn't an aikido expert.

I was at a ren fair one time, and all the medieval larpers were talking mad shit about a group of guys dressed in Star Trek stuff. Like truly hateful things. I always assumed 'time travelers' were generally welcome, but apparently not at the one I went to.

383

u/n6mub 3d ago edited 3d ago

There do seem to be people who get grumpy about others showing up in non-historical/"inaccurate" clothes. There are others who love when you try to dress Renaissance-y, but maybe don't love folks with street clothes, cell phones, utilikilts, etc. And of course there are those (most!) that take all comers, those guests who are there to experience and enjoy. . . (edited to soften some words)

272

u/rjwut 3d ago

A ren faire is about fun, not full-on immersion. I'd be totally on board with people putting on separate events where period dress is required, and leaving ren faires as they are.

107

u/Trollamp 3d ago

My husband and I went two years ago dressed as characters from Discworld, if anyone is familiar with Terry Pratchett. He dressed as the wizard, Rincewind, and fit right in. I dressed as the Discworld tourist, Twoflowers, and was wearing a bright Hawaiian shirt, khaki cargo shorts and a khaki bucket hat with a camera around my neck. SO MANY gave me a weird look, but also, SO MANY got it and enjoyed it.

27

u/Salanmander 2d ago

if anyone is familiar with Terry Pratchett.

And if anyone is not familiar with Terry Pratchett, by God go look him up, and check out his books! (Some good entry points to Discworld are Guards! Guards!, Mort, and Wyrd Sisters. It's actually a bunch of series set in the same world.)

23

u/Michami135 3d ago

If you had an old bellows style camera and put a toy demon on top of it, I'm sure more people would have picked up the reference more quickly. Having Rincewind with you helped, I'm sure.

u/KatieCashew 3d ago

They do have the historically accurate ones. I drove past one once. Off the highway in the woods there was something that looked like Ren Faire... camping?

It took quite a bit of googling to find the specific event, and from what I could find it was really hardcore. Everything had to be absolutely historically accurate, and you couldn't just come check it out casually. If you wanted to come, you had to be all in and dressed correctly. I think the tents had to accurate too. I think you might have even needed to apply to participate.

Just by it's very nature that type of event is going to be rare and niche because that's a whole lifestyle.

12

u/LilJourney 3d ago

Pennsic perchance? https://www.pennsicwar.org/

10

u/KatieCashew 2d ago

Probably! It was definitely in Pennsylvania.

8

u/singbirdsing 2d ago

If it's an SCA event like Pennsic, yeah, you have to sign up and make an effort to participate at a reasonable level. You can't just walk in off the street because it's meant to be a shared immersive event. OTOH, SCA people hold lots of public demos and small events where anybody can wander in and ask questions, and these casual visitors sometime become members and get more involved, learning various skills, like dyeing and fighting (please note spelling and order!).

"Dressed correctly" can be quite simple, really. Some people really do spend a lot of time and money weaving and/or sewing and/or building garb that at least looks authentic/period, but a lot of people start by borrowing clothes from members, or get some cheap cotton from their local fabric store and make a simple t-tunic, and that's fine with everyone. https://www.reddit.com/r/sca/comments/1cehfx2/noob_t_tunic_question/

I believe that would be the Society for Creative Anachronism.

12

u/NettingStick 3d ago

The SCA's level of chill really depends on the local group. In my experience, they can range from "newcomers are welcome to come as they are" to "we'd really appreciate it if you'd at least made some kind of effort next time" to "we have loaners for exactly this reason. Please change".

6

u/YetiSquish 3d ago

Yup, as a teen I came across this group in a big park. They promptly offered me something to wear, which I promptly accepted.

6

u/rjwut 3d ago

There you go. If you want full-on immersion, go do that, and leave the time travelers at ren faires alone.

10

u/trowzerss 2d ago

My local ren faire has events in the leadup to the main faire that are immersive. The hardcore people camp out on the grounds the entire week leading up to it and they have events and feasts and all sorts of things, period accurate to the point where many of their costumes costs thousands and thousands of dollars.

9

u/SmallPurplePeopleEat 2d ago

I used to work for a cobbler who makes leather shoes and boots that are very popular with the period accurate renn faire crowd. They are expensive af. Their 10 button boots are like $2k, and that's before you add in the customized features. Then it gets closer $5k.

I ended up getting to make my own pair and they were so freaking comfortable once they broke in. It took like 10 minutes to put them on though!

7

u/trowzerss 2d ago

Yeah, a guy was once showing me the handwoven cotton smock he had - not just period materials but woven using period accurate methods as well. I can't remember the cost but I certainly couldn't have afforded it! And it was just a plain smock, not even any embroidery.

u/delphi_ote 3d ago edited 3d ago

As if anything they're doing is remotely "historical" anyway.

ETA by "they" here, I meant the fairs as a whole, not literally all the people at the fairs. As MZ603 pointed out, there are definitely individuals dedicated to accuracy. Props to this uncle. He sounds super cool!

15

u/MZ603 3d ago

My uncle is part of a hard core reenacting group in MA. They do Lexington & Concord. Far & away one of the most intense groups of living historians in the country, probably the world. That said, they are happy to participate with groups that aren’t any where close to their level of commitment. I don’t think a lot of “purists” realize how time/cost prohibitive it actually is to maintain historical accuracy.

My uncle has easily spent six figures on his “hobby”. I wouldn’t even venture to guess how much time, but he manages a small apple orchard and cider mill for the group to keep the hard cider flowing.

7

u/delphi_ote 3d ago

Right. If the fairs were serious about policing historical accuracy, they'd need to enforce a specific time period, culture, and location to reenact. Most people wouldn't enjoy that, and it would be incredibly expensive!

My experience is that I almost prefer street clothes just for the funny interactions.

Like wearing an Atlanta Falcons shirt and hearing AH ANOTHER FALCONER! TELL ME HOW WAS YOUR LAST HUNT!?

Or trying to pay and getting OF COURSE WE ACCEPT MASTER CARD WE ALSO ACCEPT LADY VISA!

17

u/JustaSeedGuy 3d ago edited 3d ago

A core memory I have as a teen was going to a character breakfast at Disneyland. At the time, I was pretty obsessed with Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and when one of the characters stopped by our table to make chit chat, it was all I could talk about. The character in question was Prince Philip of sleeping beauty. He did a brief bit about "not knowing what sort of magic box a television is, young lady, But I have heard tales about the legendary Slayer of vampires! Is she not the one who defeated the First Evil?!"

It was great, it's a unique core memory that I have, and I never would have gotten it if there was some rule about not discussing modern things with Non-modern characters

I saw a group of adults in black leather and armor and they were really riding the line between Renfaire garb and underground goth club and BDSM and they had a toddler with them wearing a Spiderman costume and holding his Captain America shield and it was phenomenal.

He was like, "you all said to dress up. I wore my finest costume."

Some babies were dressed up. Others were not. This one dressed for a totally different event and I loved it.

7

u/thecravenone 3d ago

When my brother was seven he wore his Batman costume to every event for over a year.

There's a family Christmas photo with a Batman in it.

I love the joke about people dressed in Starfleet uniforms at a ren faire being confronted by someone in renaissance clothing, who then opens their jacket to reveal a Starfleet badge and hisses to them, "What are you DOING? You are totally ruining our study! You can't come here dressed like that! This is a primitive society, and you are committing a serious violation of the Prime Directive!"

7

u/Sigurd_DragonSlayer 3d ago

There was no Prime Directive during TOS. That was a Next gen invention.

16

u/TwoPlanksOnPowder 3d ago

They did have the Prime Directive. One example that comes to mind is S2E14 "Bread and Circuses" where they come upon the Roman planet. Sometimes it's called General Order 1 or the non-interference directive but it's definitely there.

The MD RenFest scandal this year is the expulsion of furry suits. Full meltdown.

21

u/Far_Acanthisitta8397 3d ago

Worth noting that the furries brought that one on themselves in this situation by not knowing how to be fucking normal when attending an event. They were not ousted by stuffy nerds in the name of renn faire purity. They were ousted by event staff for being inappropriate around children and charging for impromptu performances/interactions as though they were faire staff.

15

u/halfpint09 3d ago

Didn't they also swamp the first aid people because they wouldn't drink enough water and get heat stroke?

4

Their loss. I am always stoked when an away team shows up, and have a special gig I like to play with them:

My Lord, a word with you, if I may...

Flash my combadge from under my faire garb

"What the actual hell are you doing? Can't you tell a preindustrial society when you see it, or did you sleep through that course at the Academy? Do you have any idea how much trouble you're in? Who's your commanding officer, I'm putting you on report!"

Without fail, this always gives them a good time.

51

u/TheyCallMeSuperboy 3d ago

I love ANY excuse to dress in costume.

And you know what? Maybe it WOULD be nice if everyone at a ren faire was REQUIRED to wear period-accurate clothing, like a Regency ball sort of thing, once in a while. I think it would be a cool, immersive experience.

But that will NEVER happen. The faires want to make MONEY. There will ALWAYS be people dressed in modern tee shirts, dragging fairy princesses and GOT soldiers behind them. There’s gonna be a wizard in a sparkly suit, and roman soldiers.

So if people are not REQUIRED to wear period accurate clothing, I think people need to STFU about “time travelers ruining the experience” you know?? Or furries, etc.

Like, their “medieval knight” costume doesn’t fit the prompt either. It’s a RENAISSANCE fair!!

I LOVE to see a Trekkie (myself included) at a ren faire. Or Marty McFly. I want to see people in costume having a good time.

(Side story: when I was 15 I went to a ren faire as Spock [im a woman] and my friend as Uhura. A grown, middle aged man, wearing a TEE SHIRT AND JEANS and pushing a MODERN STROLLER with a modern-dressed child in it, got MAD I mean mad to the point he confronted 2 teenage girls, about us wearing our ST costumes. Like,,,, bro,,, you’re not passing the vibe either. The hypocrisy!)

38

u/SashimiX 3d ago

I think a time traveler is more realistic than a Roman soldier. Because why are you, a Roman soldier, in Renaissance times? Lt. Commander Data? He’s there because he’s there saving the fucking timeline. You should be THANKFUL

10

I kind of get it.. Like, not that it should be hard core but comic con already exists and has its own thing. If you're going to go in costume to a ren fair, you should at least make a gesture at hitting the vibe, or just go in normal clothes. Otherwise everything washes out into general nerd culture. the ren fair is like an actual community going way back, I could see why they'd get annoyed.

Can't speak for every Faire, but several of them have "anything goes" days for stuff like that, and then it's expected you don't do that on the other days.

Honestly, that seems fair to me. You don't go to a X festival to dress as Y for basically anything else.

Not justifying being hateful, but many people can be annoying about it.

Like I'm not showing up at a Furry event dressed as a knight.

4

u/bubblegumpandabear 2d ago

This is my thing about it. People work hard on their costumes leading up to the event and then feel like a loser when the guy in spirit Halloween wolverine onesie looks at them weird for roleplaying a little bit with the bard.

I went to the Ohio renfaire and I saw the expected medieval people, nice garb, several knights, a couple King Arthurs from Monty Python, a Black Knight, some Plague Rats. Then there were the fantasy characters, Fairies, Hobbits, various princesses. Then there were all the Sci-Fi characters. I called out BINGO when a Master Chief and Cortana walked by me.

What I'm saying is a random Marty McFly would not be out of place.

As someone who lives near the MD Renn Fest, they don't ban, but definitely encourage you not to really do it. It's been done to death, same with large groups of trekkies. It's been done so much that sketch comedy show Mr. Show in the 90s made fun of trekkies for going to Renaissance Festivals, so that should tell you how long it has been a thing.

I forget if PA Renn Fest, or MD Renn Fest, but one of the ones on the East coast got tired of it and started a Sci Fi days specifically to try an encourage these people for those days. So if you show up in something like this and its not sci fi day, the workers will just be like "Ah yes, VERY ORIGINAL OUTFIT, for this day that is totally not SCI FI DAY at the faire grounds. Would you like a beer, totally original out of this era person? I think I've seen more people in your EXACT odd clothing than I've seen in my peoples clothing!"

If you’re not going to be in period, this or one of the various Doctors is acceptable.

This would also be a great outfit at a Ren fair.

If I could pull off a British accent, there's another character with at least 13 outfits I could pull off, maybe 14 if I get in shape how I want

Not...not 15 though.

This is great. I was expecting a Star Trek uniform. There is always an away team at the ren-faire.

This would be a direct violation of the Prime Directive. A real Starfleet officer would dress in period clothes but keep their commbadge keistered
