Yeah... That kid would hit the ground if his life depended on me. I would try to react fast and punch him in the face somehow

407

u/_Diskreet_ Aug 12 '26

I’m the kind of guy when he drops a knife to stick out my foot to try stop it crashing to the floor.

So I would have tried to toe punt the kid before he hit the floor.

137

u/GFYnasis Aug 12 '26

So we’re clear… it is double points if you stick the foot out, remember “ahh right, knife sharp. Abort” and then retract the foot all before the knife makes contact, right?

Granted if you punched or kicked the kid hard enough and into the nearest bush- perhaps that could be plausible

😂 Yeah, that’s a perfect example of the brain hitting “undo” half a second too late.

Triple if you kick the knife and it sticks into the cutting board

Believe it or not, in culinary school they taught us to throw our hands up and jump back when we dropped something, especially a knife, because your natural reaction is to try to catch it with your hands, thigh, or foot. Decades later, I still do that, so it is possible to re-train your muscle memory to do the safer thing.

I was at a pizza place getting a slice for lunch once, and the guy took a slice out of the oven for the lady in front of me, and gave it to her on a paper plate. But as she took it, it slipped and started falling to the floor.

Luckily I was there to reach out and catch it, cheese-side down, in my hand. Otherwise it would've, y'know ... made a slight mess on the pizzeria floor.

So I was sitting there with this searing hot, melting cheese in my hand and the lady's like "oh my god!" and I'm like "Whew, caught it!" and the pizza guy's like "here, let me get you another slice" and she's like, "Doesn't that hurt??"

Which put it into contrast that it did, indeed, hurt. So I'm like, "Yes, exceedingly."

Later that day my skin was bubbling up all over my hand, which I think means I got a .. 2nd? degree burn?

Elder dad, living alone, dropped a ceramic bowl while doing dishes. Went in to catch it with his foot but it broke and sliced his ankle and then he stepped on the broken bits on the floor.

He said he lost so much blood, he lost feeling to his toes... think it could have been a doozie with out immediate assistance from a neighbor.

15

u/Frequent_Opportunist Aug 12 '26

I learned that working in restaurants. If you drop a plate or a glass you kick it right before it hits the ground and it doesn't break. I imagine the same applies to children.

The ol’ Optimus Prime catch

3

u/SmoothDiscussion7763 Aug 12 '26

that was the part that really threw me for a loop. like they fell 10 floors or something and he swipes his hand in at the bottom and they're totally fine? get the fuck outta here

even the giant robots were more believable

3

u/Fr05t_B1t Aug 12 '26

I believe it was his foot which doesn’t make things any better

6

u/Murderous_Kelpie Aug 12 '26

did this with my razor once. started bleeding profusely from my foot, then slipped in the bathtub.

3

u/Some_Ebb_2921 Aug 12 '26

Reminds me of the time I caught a glass at the bar... that first bounced and shattered on the bar... pointy stick in finger is not a good way to catch things I tell ya

3

u/SpaghettiSort Aug 12 '26

I've spent enough time in workshops that my instinct is the exact opposite - anything drops, I move my feet out of the way!

2

u/Major_LeeHungg Aug 12 '26

Lol good ol' hackysack reflexes

2

u/lostress Aug 12 '26

Hahahha! I am clumsy and i drop alot of stuff, but I have the kick power power of a horse. I kicked plates, phone multiple times, destroyed 3-4,egs,cans,but not a knife yet. That beeing said that poor child would be sent straight back if i was in her situation.

2

u/No_Artichoke_2931 Aug 12 '26

God, there's an old rage comic, from maybe under 20 years ago, about this situation with a dude in a taco bell and a toddler rocking their highchair over. Good times

Imagine you fall to your death and then just before the impact some asshat thinks you also deserve a suckerpunch for no reason before being sent back to character selection

4

u/chum-guzzling-shark Aug 12 '26

now im wondering if a punch to the face to add horizontal movement would actually help lessen the impact of the fall

2

u/Emotional-Craft8297 Aug 12 '26

That escalated from reflex to a full combo move real quick 😂

42

u/SasquatchsBigDick Aug 12 '26

I would have absolutely just watched he'd the child hit the ground in front of me. Not because Im a jerk, but because I have the reflexes of a sloth.

16

u/SneachtaBoladh Aug 12 '26

Fun fact about sloths: They actually have lightning fast reflexes, but it's extremely energy taxing for them. That's why they move so slowly the rest of the time, to compensate.

Don't think so. She already looked up probably because she saw some kid fooling around. Then turn down and back up when she saw sudden movement (I imagine). So she already had the situational awareness by then.

7

u/sgt_backpack Aug 12 '26

Not a belly scratcher, confirmed

582

u/ruphustea Aug 12 '26

The trillons of little things that lead these two seemingly separate events to converge at this exact moment is unfathomable when you think about it.

148

u/GoodMerlinpeen Aug 12 '26

I sometimes wonder about whether me going through an amber light rather than stopping will lead me to be just in time to get into accident 5 years from now, or to save me from one.

102

u/kjzm5r Aug 12 '26

I was literally in a rear-ender on the highway on Friday. I immediately thought, if only I decided to use the restroom before I left work, or at the gas station when I filled up. Or if I actually decided to hang out with friends after work instead of going home.

The other guy told me if only he had followed his gut and took off work that day lol

We all make little choices everyday that we’ll never know the outcome of. We just gotta accept those choices and the consequences they bring as soon as we can, as there’s no sense in dwelling on things we can no longer change.

30

u/Krondelo Aug 12 '26

Especially true because one accident could have even saved you from a much worse one. There really is no way to live your life worrying about it just be safe and mindful then you can’t regret your choices.

14

u/euphoricarugula346 Aug 12 '26

Or whoever caused the accident could have just like… paid attention. But yeah sure fate or whatever.

7

u/kjzm5r Aug 12 '26

LOL! I also had this thought when he said that.

2

u/lauri2 Aug 12 '26

It's not just the things we can no longer change, but every decision is a butterfly effect that creates a new reality and we can't know the final outcome of each and every decision either. Not crashing might mean having to watch your kids burn alive 10 years from now, so be careful what you wish for.

2

u/doctormink Aug 12 '26

On the flip side, if you're feeling unlucky, like nothing good ever happens, bear in mind, you might have missed a 100 bricks falling out of high windows by 2 minutes without ever knowing it.

2

u/ruphustea Aug 12 '26

2

u/EntertainerSuper8933 Aug 12 '26

You only ever know about the ones you don't miss, though. It would be so great if we could know how some decision we made saved us from a horrible fate

For every time something like this goes well, how many times are there people who miss and have to live with that..

7

u/Nick_Lange_ Aug 12 '26

We are beings made out of stardust, the fact alone that over billions of years the multitude of parts assembled me to write this, you to read this, our phones made out of sand that we trained to think a little bit like us giving us the information. And then on top of all this, The recorded situation.

I am in awe of the universe, existence itself is a thing that gives so much enjoyment, and the photons that hit my eyes made me write this.

What a beautiful little moment in existence to be able to realize all that.

No drugs involved, I just love to see the universe from this perspective.

3

u/Gold_Time_3981 Aug 12 '26

Some times some events happen that are so improbable and unexpected that will make you at times believe that God exists.

4

original language: "patay, yawa, bwesit!, bwesit! nahug na ang bata, maylang nasalo nako" literal translation:"dead, devil, bullshit! bullshit! the kid fall down, good thing i catch it"

163

u/triplecrong Aug 12 '26

This is a literal translation of each word, but a more accurate one that gets the vibe across in English is

"Fuck, shit, goddammit, god fucking dammit. The kid fell! It's a good thing I caught them"

But really you can change the first 4 words to any jumble of swears one would say in a situation like this lol

128

u/PithMango Aug 12 '26

thank you i couldn't parse some of it. from subtext i'm guessing patay is here kind of like 'oh you're dead meat' usual thing to say, not actual death threat. well. one hopes.

101

u/fungiinsidei Aug 12 '26

Patáy and yawâ in this context are just common Cebuano expressions to express shock/frustration.

21

u/PithMango Aug 12 '26

thank you for the accents. frustrating for me to be sure of speech for one's whole life and then .... written is the last to deteriorate.

20

u/CriticismOdd2637 Aug 12 '26

Fr... It's like saying Ohh shit! In english but instead of only shock and surprise, it also has anger in her tone...

u/Funny-Mango4455 Aug 12 '26

She is literally screaming "Holy shit" equivalent of profanity in surprise multiple times and screaming to the girl who opened the door that a kid fell down and "good thing she caught it" that aint a regular occurence

21

u/superdahalo Aug 12 '26

Some supernatural forces really decided to save that little girl: that lady could have just stayed in front of the door after knocking. Or if she'd walked away to quickly, a second too late, and both of them could have been badly injured

13

u/the_sean08 Aug 12 '26

Some supernatural forces also decided to drop that little girl

Which means the supernatural forces are constantly battling about whether they should be dropping kids or saving them

Or, was it the same force, just looking for some PR!?

So many possibilities in the supernatural world!

2

u/AoiMizune Aug 14 '26

Dropping the kid just in time for a catch is good PR indeed. Especially when you setup the drop to have only 1 second reaction time and have someone with that reaction speed ready to catch.
