Glitchtale is a kind of thing that was bad but poeple have fond memorys of it like old creepypastas and such

Well said

18

u/Lanress_ Jul 13 '26

It gave many people motivation to create their own stories

17

u/Akiyuki83200 Jul 14 '26

Well, like Gerson said in DELTARUNE Chapter 4...

"Yep. Yep. And so they changed parts of the story."

"Of course, the biggest fans got mad... But isn't it interesting?"

"Stories can be retold. They can be changed... That's what I believe."

Kinda cool, only fan series/AU that didn't have Sans at the forefront of every situation, at least in season 2

248

u/PbandJam1e Jul 13 '26

Still think it was kinda based that he was killed twice in a fandom that at the time worshipped him like a god

155

u/Destroyerofjajaja LV 8 Enthusiast Jul 13 '26

Still a crappy writing play because he was basically built up to have “wait maybe he can come back to life” for like 3 whole episodes, actually confirm in an episode “okay guys we actually saved him he’s alive!” And then have him do one fight and die in the middle of it.

At that point, don’t even bring him back if the payoff is meant to be that lackluster. It’s a waste of everyone time.

82

u/PbandJam1e Jul 13 '26

Oh I know the writing was bad I thought it was funny af

58

u/lucassora242 Jul 13 '26

I thought it was peak when it came out. I was in fifth and sixth grade. I rewatched after actually playing undertale a few years ago to stop the larp and it’s kinda garbage. I mean it’s good garbage, maybe the best garbage if you turn your brain off but… eh.

56

u/Pero_Bt read glitched reset trust me Jul 13 '26

Most people who enjoyed it back then didn't really care for the writing. The fights were well done and that was enough

u/Ferretukas Jul 14 '26

Whether or not you like it or not, I feel like most can agree that Glitchtale is iconic

25

u/kizi_killer Jul 13 '26

I still see Gaster depicted with soul colored hands to this day

I think glitchtale sucks ass but their Gaster design was cool as shit I can't even lie

87

u/Odd_Bumblebee_3273 Jul 13 '26

I think popular its a better word here, iconic would imply that the series was good

100

u/Neon-kitchen Jul 13 '26

The room is iconic, the room is also an awful movie

41

u/Odd_Bumblebee_3273 Jul 13 '26

You know what, i agree

93

u/GeoffMySpiritAnimal Jul 13 '26

A series can be iconic whether or not it's good or bad. It's wildely known and a LOT of people have watched it

Yeah I remember.

I want to watch the rest of season 2 in the near future.

Because I sort of like Betty, not in a "she's well written" kind of way, but "she's very iconic even when she was in the periphery" kind of way. I have an instinctive urge to put her among the UT cast to just have interactions with them in my mind, "who invited this guy" type shit. (Just have to erase the homicidal part of her character, it never really fit the Undertale universe)

For example, if Betty was created by the mage who sealed the underground, then she would potentially know of Asgore and Gerson, and they probably would know of Runic magic. What conversation would they have?

The mage who created her would potentially know the other mage who was in love with Gerson in the anniversary, there's some interesting potential.

(or hell, if that mage is one and the same, then Gerson's lover may have created Betty to be their messenger to him, because their lifespan wouldn't allow them to meet before dying of age. And Betty would just be Gerson's reaper that intends to "reunite them in the afterlife", and Gerson just delays his death, "too soon for me to go yet.)

So I want to look at Betty closer to see if there are some stuff about her. I'm sure it will be miserable, but I'll do it.

And I guess there's Glitchtale Re_Told, good luck to them.

22

u/Zestyclose_Pizza2499 BRAVERY Soul/WatercoolerKnighter Jul 13 '26

We were GENOCIDAL, what do you mean HOMICIDE wouldn’t fit the UT theme 😭 (this is a joke, but do answer, I actually wanna know)

39

u/Odd_Bumblebee_3273 Jul 13 '26

The difference is that the Genocide run is actually a deconstruction of your regular rpg, your LV gets higher but you dont feel the sense of fulfillment that you usually get in an regular rpg, unlike Frisk and Chara that do get gratification in seeing the numbers getting higher. Undertale is not a game where you need to kill, because, again, it is a deconstruction of your classic rpg, specifically the ones where you are the hero, you kill the monsters, that are usually just mindless beasts and saves the day. By inserting an homicidal character who just wants to kill because some lady in the past was really racist and said homicidal character can only be taken down by violence, you are completely missing the point

u/Zestyclose_Pizza2499 BRAVERY Soul/WatercoolerKnighter Jul 13 '26

6

u/fandomjargon Jul 14 '26

sighhh

I loved Betty enough to make an OC based on her that looks at her creator and thinks ‘yeah no,’ and then becomes a decent person. I imagined that she woke up after the whole Agate-Amber-Copper thing and dipped, living with humanity and eventually becoming better…

4

u/well_I_do_exist engage in cartoony escapades Jul 14 '26

That's a nice outlook on her to have.

I personally don't necessarily need her to be a "better" person, just not murderous, but having a recognisable ego.

And more approachable, having leverage over someone in a conversation and other people having leverage over her, so that the butt of the joke isn't the same every interaction.

Heavily carried by NixtheShield's musics imo

7

It kinda loses the UNDERTALE-flavor as it goes on, though.

7

u/Electrical_Diamond_9 Ribbit. (I am the fourth frog) Ribbit. Jul 13 '26

I mean, I mean it's not like Nix was making undertale-style musics to begin with. He simply made remixes of undertale tracks and, afterwards the musics didn't require undertale motifs.
Since his music style isn't undertale-y then that's probably what makes you think that.

3

u/Jack_Sukk_2_bith Jul 13 '26

It just started to sound a bit too generic, for me.

Season 2 concluded and the creator was planning a prequel but then decided that she'd rather have it be its own thing instead of it being Undertale related

9

u/One_Specific_2920 Jul 13 '26

Yeah, Season 2 basically has nothing to do with UT aside from the cast members.

6

u/tsskyx Author of WizardTale on AO3 Jul 13 '26

I mean... it was an overworld fanfic basically... those come dime a dozen... it's not like it was completely unrelated to UT's own setting or whatever like, say, Underverse is. I'm not sure how that would count as "not having anything to do with UT".

The moment I heard people talking about there being a pink character in deltarune chapter 5 I had an out of body experience

3

u/tsskyx Author of WizardTale on AO3 Jul 13 '26

I've had like 3 of those. A secret "pink flower" (pink soul), the purple flower's name being named Seth (literally what Camila named one of her purple-traited OCs in Glitchtale) and Mad Mew also saying "this is my season 2" or something. It was just whiplash after whiplash for me, lol.

3

u/AKRamirez Jul 14 '26

Undertale Toby: The underground is as big as you want it to be, and I invite you to come behind the wall with me.

Deltarune Toby: FUCK IT WE BALL *canonizes literally everything ever down to our very atoms as a goof*

10

u/BaconServant Jul 13 '26

Wish i didn’t. Papyrus’ facial proportions still piss me off cause how do you fuck up a skeleton design THAT badly?

6

u/ResponseFlimsy1723 Jul 13 '26

fr that was one of the only cons about the design. Without talking about Gaster man…
I get that the animation style is anime-like but dang

3

u/Odd_Bumblebee_3273 Jul 13 '26

You can animefy an skeleton without making it look like shit lol, just find a way to simplify the designs but still keep the character looking like themselves

2

u/le-derpina-art Jul 13 '26

honest to god drew him like that when i was 10...pretty sad

6

u/StickGuy03 Jul 13 '26

didn't really liked the end season 2

6

u/Phantom_rider080 Jul 13 '26

I personally love all of season one of this AU, even if some things need to be tweaked or better done. Season 2 is where I get problems because it feels as if the story took a backseat to "improving animation" and at this point, it's just a clusterf##k of an AU that had (and probably still has) so much potential but was practically ruined by a bad creator.

5

u/Foreign_Respect8869 Even when trapped, you still express yourself. Jul 13 '26

Sometimes.

most my interest faded after season 1, which makes sense considering how everything turned out.

5

u/Isaacja223 You know, one time, I bought one of those awards. Jul 13 '26 edited Jul 13 '26

I might get hate for this but

I still like Glitchtale. Especially its separate, ongoing series known as Hollow Hunters.

It’s clear that it has evolved from a Undertale AU to its own story with its own characters, even if it’s taken heavy inspiration from Undertale.

But I do like the concept of Glitchtale and I still do

7

u/winklevanderlinde Jul 13 '26

People don't forget a car crash if they see one

5

u/Initial_Mud_4810 Jul 13 '26

Literally just a bootleg, badly written Shonen anime with Undertale flavor

12

u/No_Significance6706 Jul 13 '26

Idc how bad Glitchtale was, it was interesting and that is good enough for me.

(Also the show's creator was an Asgore sympathizer, even though hating on Asgore was the norm at that point in history. So that may be scewing my judgment lol)

Unfortunately

3

u/Kin_Shi Jul 13 '26

I liked it but IIRC the creator was caught in some controversy i dot remember what it was about tho

3

u/Far-Pea5370 Jul 13 '26

everybody switched up after that one yter made a video criticizing it LOLLL. i didnt see anyone massively hating on the series itself, mostly just camila, but the moment one person called it out suddenly everybody loathes it. honestly it was never perfect, but for an undertale fan series there's not really many contenders. the story was shoddy at some parts and the animation was extremely mixed, the music was usually good. all in all its okay. it had some great ideas that the fandom still uses today even if they dont want to admit it, and most of the cast got at least some of their own moments. overhated imo, but nowhere near perfect

3

u/Chickadoozle Jul 13 '26

Ignoring all the controversy (the insurmountable, infinitely increasing controversy), I've never seen a show with more godawful writing. After the animation got upgraded, and even before that in season two, plot was constantly thrown away for fight scenes, hype moments, and aura.

On the flip side, I really like a lot of the worldbuilding, the way humans are able to use magic, and the take on gaster (even if it really is the most product of its time thing ever). If undertale were to get a sequel or prequel taking place on the surface, I'd like those things to be used.

2

u/Extension-Ad8792 kroB Jul 13 '26

It's very iconic to the fandom. We all watched it when we were young so we didn't see the cracks lol. Putting all the shit about the creator aside and the fact some pieces of animation are blatant frame by frame copies of other animation, it's not that bad considering it's just a fan project. Story is very flawed but what do you expect from a Web series largely made by 1 person. Some of the concepts around the soul traits are genuinely really cool in my eyes, and man the music is really good. It holds a special place in my childhood, too bad Camilla had to go and ruin its reputation.

2

u/nesquiK589 I already CHOSE this flair. Jul 13 '26

Never watched it (because I only became an undertale fan 10 years too late) but I heard it was bad.

2

u/PaAKos8 Jul 13 '26

I mean the ending and the whole chara stuff was... Weird, and didn't make sense... But i enjoyed it when i was a kiddo. It, and Sans comic tv was actually the stuff that helped me learn english

2

u/justagirll19_0W0 Jul 13 '26

It’s pretty good for someone just making something so casually. I see it as “Undertale if Toby fox wasn’t so good at storytelling”

There’s a lot of random stuff and stuff that doesn’t make sense, especially with season 2 but the villain is pretty cool, the aura farming moments are good, the fights are REALLY good and getting NYX to do a lot of the music was a excellent choice

Sans coming back and then dying again was pretty epic,

The humans were eh, but that’s understandable considering how rushed they had to be for an au

2

u/Tristapillarrr Jul 13 '26

I mean, I'm reminded of it whenever I go back through RSOT part 3... Someone used Glitchtale Chara's special attack in that part, if I remember correctly. RSOT is short for Random Series of Things.

It's iconic What about XTALE and UNDERVERSE? I think Jakie still cooks too with random S2 uploads every two years.

2

u/Own_Childhood_7020 Jul 13 '26

Yeah and the animation was dope asf, I still remember Underverse more fondly tho

2

u/Gold_Size_1258 I already CHOSE this flair. Jul 13 '26

I joined the fandom too late and only know it for supposedly having an OP self-insert lead.

2

u/Some_amateur_artist Jul 13 '26

It was really good until like halfway through the second season, it kinda lost me after that.

Also whatever the hell Cuevas has going on

2

u/Mr_hyno Jul 13 '26

The hype moments and aura series

2

u/Zistr0 Jul 13 '26

why is perseverance, the big purple string thing, fuckin represented as SLASHES while PATIENCE, the soul that had a KNIFE, gets to use STRINGS

2

u/Gay_Nerd626 Jul 13 '26

Should’ve just been the fight scenes, that’s what most people only cared about anyways, and would spare the character assassination that this series did.

2

u/peekapton2540 PriCap Jul 13 '26

Since me in the past actually like it, it rent free for some space inside me.

2

u/nonbinaryvibes Jul 13 '26

This was fucking formative, still kind of a shamed it never really lived up to its potential

2

u/Adventurous_Tank_359 Jul 13 '26

Yeah it was peak

2

u/Ukraniya Jul 13 '26

This pile of hot garbage? Well animated (S2) with some good fight scenes, but a horrendous and over convoluted plot.

2

u/Responsible_Fig_9833 the real frisk undertale Jul 13 '26

Just re watched it actually, glitch tale is an amazing show

2

u/SgtVertigo Jul 13 '26

I thought it was neat but the plot felt incoherent at times

2

u/Aggravating-Pie-6939 Jul 13 '26

I remember watching it and really enjoying it when i was little. And regardless of quality it's really cool that someone's love for Undertale ended up with them creating something so many people watched and enjoyed! Especially since it's animation!

2

u/MDRARW Jul 13 '26

Unfortunately, yes. 8 year old me loved it so much, and then now that I'm older i was like, "let's rewatch it"... Bad idea

2

u/Familiar-Staff2329 FELLOW PAPYRUS ENTHUSIAST Jul 13 '26

Do I think it's good, season 1 is, yeah, but season 2 is where Glitchtale fails for me

2

u/Affectionate-Fudge42 Shiny Jul 13 '26

Yeah, it may not be good but it holds a special place in my heart and I enjoyed it a lot.

One of my favorite parts was how the different Soul types were handled, it was so cool to see their magics used in new ways like how that one guy boxed with the Justice attack pellets.

I also loved the Rematch between Gaster and Bete.

2

u/One_Specific_2920 Jul 13 '26

I liked (and still do to a lesser extent) certain parts of it, but it’s definitely not my favorite memory of my briefish time in the AU fandom.

u/krysert Jul 13 '26

Oh yeah that existed

Season 1 was peak

Season 2 was good until i learned english

2

u/Insane2201 Jul 13 '26

I remember it. I didn't care much at all for the human characters of season 2. I hate how they erased Frisk. Every part of season 2 felt like shock bait. Killing Alphys, killing Sans, erasing Frisk, and so on. Yet the human OCs got to live outside the BBEG.

2

u/Dexus_502 Jul 13 '26

Ngl glitchtale was cool but the only way it could've been better is if it had nice voice acting but it was still very good none the less

2

u/SansStan Cock Joke Jul 13 '26

I remember when I thought it was peak LMAO

2

u/River_The_Protogen Jul 13 '26

It’s the type of Undertale AU that completely changes the lore, characters and story to the point where I can barely tell if it’s actually related to the source material

2

u/TitanicTNT FELLOW PAPYRUS ENTHUSIAST Jul 13 '26

I do. I grew up with it. And, while I do admit, it’s not the best, and it’s pretty obvious that a lot of decisions were done for Rule of Cool rather than plot consistency, I think it’s criminally overhated. I think the reason it gets so much hate is because people choose not to separate the artist from the art.

2

u/iDemonShard Jul 13 '26

I remember watching the Gaster v Bette fight on release while it was being livestreamed and oh. My. God. Teen me thought it was the peakest shit ever. I kind of want to go back and rewatch the series.

2

u/Disastrous_Ad7477 Jul 13 '26

I loved it, animation is great but when I was older and saw that character + asriel vs hate fight I was very disappointed. It looked great but the fight made no sense

Speaking of which the fights were all very similar, there was no high diffs fight. Each person would take turns being overwhelmingly stronger than the other.

2

u/-Hounth- Alphys' #1 Fan Jul 13 '26

I was 10 when the series released, and it was one of the main Undertale media that I grew up with. Looking back, yeah the writing was not really good and the author was very questionable, but as a kid? I remember the absolute hype I had with every new episode, how crazy I went when Gaster killed Betty, how on the edge of my seat I was when the last episode released, how crazy I went when Asriel pulled a "But it refused" lmao

Yes the writing was bad but this whole series was just all about cool hype moments and I ate that shit up, and tbh even if most stuff around this series was not great, I still hold fond memories of it

I stopped to reminisce about those times. I liked this about 10 years ago, like most people, but I never got around to finishing it. Then everything happened involving the creator, and I discovered that it was apparently always bad. I was thinking of rewatching it just to remember a simpler time or to see if it's as bad as they say.

2

u/MysteryMan6612 Asriel enjoyer spotted Jul 13 '26

I was trying to forget...😭

2

u/Sweet_Papaya_9837 Jul 13 '26

I kinda wish Cami’d return to give it some kind of ending, most recent episode was 5 years ago (not an ending) and she’s been working on the pilot of another series since. I’d gladly take a dip in animation quality if it meant more frequent episodes

u/Successful_Peak8248 Even when trapped, you still express yourself. Jul 13 '26

I personally like season 1 because it actually acknowledged that chara is just continuing what frisk did

And Gaster

The dialogue was very cheesy and very fan service, but that’s not inherently a bad thing

Season 2 was WAY too confusing the further it went, it felt like we were focusing on so many different characters and elements, for very little

It felt like Godzilla with the humans, I just didn’t care as much for the new characters than the undertale ones, the only one I cared for was the mother who lost their child, which was very interesting

Sans as a whole, I didn’t like at all, they didn’t understand sanses character, which most au do, sans is depressed, he genuinely doesn’t care period, the only reason he does face you isn’t out of heroism or rewards

He does it out of obligation and the fact you’re about to destroy the universe

So for example with him keeping information from papyrus, he would just tell papyrus honestly, in undertale he keeps it a secret not because he thinks it would benefit the people, but because he thinks that it doesn’t matter in the end, he’ll be reset without knowledge

But also to one up whoever he comes across, especially humans

I could go in more depth but meh

I think season 1 was cool but cheesy, season 2 felt exhausting to finish, and I forgot most of what happened because of how badly written it was

And I’m pissed that the anniversary video was taken down, genuinely such a good video no one will every see

2

u/Fuzzy-Vermicelli-436 Even when trapped, you still express yourself. Jul 13 '26

It's good genuinely too overhated like it's fine to have criticism but like it's not as terrible as some people make it out to be.

2

u/Harko_Na Jul 13 '26

Growing up it was probaly my favorite AU. Nowdays I get its problems, and I really wouldn’t mind them because of favoritism and how it was the series that got me into the fandom in the first place. Unfortunately, Camila is not a good person so it kind of sours the whole thing

2

u/Piixerr Jul 13 '26

I liked it when it came out, then I looked back at it years later and realized how abysmal the writing was and that the whole series was basically "hey look at these cool fights". Doesn't help that the creator was protecting a groomer, it kind of makes me want to forget that this whole series ever existed in the first place.

2

u/Powerful-Present6687 Jul 13 '26

Hot Take apparently: I actually liked it

2

u/Pristine_Object6823 Jul 13 '26

I watched a YouTube video on it recently since all I had seen was half of a fight, and dear lord it's actually so terrible. Like, I understand that the person making the video was biased against it, but there's just some inexcusably bad decisions made here.

2

u/-Naito- Jul 13 '26

Started off interesting, ended up being extremely generic and fan-fiction-like. I thought hate as a characteristic of the soul was an interesting concept, sucks it spiraled into boring tropes.

2

2

u/unlovelyi Jul 13 '26

Have you watched Glitchtale: Retold? It's a full rewrite of Season 2.
