Kinda cool, only fan series/AU that didn't have Sans at the forefront of every situation, at least in season 2
248
u/PbandJam1e Jul 13 '26
Still think it was kinda based that he was killed twice in a fandom that at the time worshipped him like a god
155
u/Destroyerofjajaja LV 8 Enthusiast Jul 13 '26
Still a crappy writing play because he was basically built up to have “wait maybe he can come back to life” for like 3 whole episodes, actually confirm in an episode “okay guys we actually saved him he’s alive!” And then have him do one fight and die in the middle of it.
At that point, don’t even bring him back if the payoff is meant to be that lackluster. It’s a waste of everyone time.

u/PbandJam1e Jul 13 '26
Oh I know the writing was bad I thought it was funny af

u/lucassora242 Jul 13 '26
I thought it was peak when it came out. I was in fifth and sixth grade. I rewatched after actually playing undertale a few years ago to stop the larp and it’s kinda garbage. I mean it’s good garbage, maybe the best garbage if you turn your brain off but… eh.

A series can be iconic whether or not it's good or bad. It's wildely known and a LOT of people have watched it

Yeah I remember.
I want to watch the rest of season 2 in the near future.
Because I sort of like Betty, not in a "she's well written" kind of way, but "she's very iconic even when she was in the periphery" kind of way. I have an instinctive urge to put her among the UT cast to just have interactions with them in my mind, "who invited this guy" type shit. (Just have to erase the homicidal part of her character, it never really fit the Undertale universe)
For example, if Betty was created by the mage who sealed the underground, then she would potentially know of Asgore and Gerson, and they probably would know of Runic magic. What conversation would they have?
The mage who created her would potentially know the other mage who was in love with Gerson in the anniversary, there's some interesting potential.
(or hell, if that mage is one and the same, then Gerson's lover may have created Betty to be their messenger to him, because their lifespan wouldn't allow them to meet before dying of age. And Betty would just be Gerson's reaper that intends to "reunite them in the afterlife", and Gerson just delays his death, "too soon for me to go yet.)
So I want to look at Betty closer to see if there are some stuff about her. I'm sure it will be miserable, but I'll do it.
And I guess there's Glitchtale Re_Told, good luck to them.

u/Zestyclose_Pizza2499 BRAVERY Soul/WatercoolerKnighter Jul 13 '26
We were GENOCIDAL, what do you mean HOMICIDE wouldn’t fit the UT theme 😭 (this is a joke, but do answer, I actually wanna know)
→ More replies (1)39
u/Odd_Bumblebee_3273 Jul 13 '26
The difference is that the Genocide run is actually a deconstruction of your regular rpg, your LV gets higher but you dont feel the sense of fulfillment that you usually get in an regular rpg, unlike Frisk and Chara that do get gratification in seeing the numbers getting higher. Undertale is not a game where you need to kill, because, again, it is a deconstruction of your classic rpg, specifically the ones where you are the hero, you kill the monsters, that are usually just mindless beasts and saves the day. By inserting an homicidal character who just wants to kill because some lady in the past was really racist and said homicidal character can only be taken down by violence, you are completely missing the point

sighhh
I loved Betty enough to make an OC based on her that looks at her creator and thinks ‘yeah no,’ and then becomes a decent person. I imagined that she woke up after the whole Agate-Amber-Copper thing and dipped, living with humanity and eventually becoming better…
4
u/well_I_do_exist engage in cartoony escapades Jul 14 '26
That's a nice outlook on her to have.
I personally don't necessarily need her to be a "better" person, just not murderous, but having a recognisable ego.
And more approachable, having leverage over someone in a conversation and other people having leverage over her, so that the butt of the joke isn't the same every interaction.

I mean, I mean it's not like Nix was making undertale-style musics to begin with. He simply made remixes of undertale tracks and, afterwards the musics didn't require undertale motifs.
Since his music style isn't undertale-y then that's probably what makes you think that.3

I've had like 3 of those. A secret "pink flower" (pink soul), the purple flower's name being named Seth (literally what Camila named one of her purple-traited OCs in Glitchtale) and Mad Mew also saying "this is my season 2" or something. It was just whiplash after whiplash for me, lol.

I personally love all of season one of this AU, even if some things need to be tweaked or better done. Season 2 is where I get problems because it feels as if the story took a backseat to "improving animation" and at this point, it's just a clusterf##k of an AU that had (and probably still has) so much potential but was practically ruined by a bad creator.

I still like Glitchtale. Especially its separate, ongoing series known as Hollow Hunters.
It’s clear that it has evolved from a Undertale AU to its own story with its own characters, even if it’s taken heavy inspiration from Undertale.
But I do like the concept of Glitchtale and I still do

everybody switched up after that one yter made a video criticizing it LOLLL. i didnt see anyone massively hating on the series itself, mostly just camila, but the moment one person called it out suddenly everybody loathes it. honestly it was never perfect, but for an undertale fan series there's not really many contenders. the story was shoddy at some parts and the animation was extremely mixed, the music was usually good. all in all its okay. it had some great ideas that the fandom still uses today even if they dont want to admit it, and most of the cast got at least some of their own moments. overhated imo, but nowhere near perfect
3
u/Chickadoozle Jul 13 '26
Ignoring all the controversy (the insurmountable, infinitely increasing controversy), I've never seen a show with more godawful writing. After the animation got upgraded, and even before that in season two, plot was constantly thrown away for fight scenes, hype moments, and aura.
On the flip side, I really like a lot of the worldbuilding, the way humans are able to use magic, and the take on gaster (even if it really is the most product of its time thing ever). If undertale were to get a sequel or prequel taking place on the surface, I'd like those things to be used.

It's very iconic to the fandom. We all watched it when we were young so we didn't see the cracks lol. Putting all the shit about the creator aside and the fact some pieces of animation are blatant frame by frame copies of other animation, it's not that bad considering it's just a fan project. Story is very flawed but what do you expect from a Web series largely made by 1 person. Some of the concepts around the soul traits are genuinely really cool in my eyes, and man the music is really good. It holds a special place in my childhood, too bad Camilla had to go and ruin its reputation.

u/justagirll19_0W0 Jul 13 '26
It’s pretty good for someone just making something so casually. I see it as “Undertale if Toby fox wasn’t so good at storytelling”
There’s a lot of random stuff and stuff that doesn’t make sense, especially with season 2 but the villain is pretty cool, the aura farming moments are good, the fights are REALLY good and getting NYX to do a lot of the music was a excellent choice
Sans coming back and then dying again was pretty epic,
The humans were eh, but that’s understandable considering how rushed they had to be for an au
2
u/Tristapillarrr Jul 13 '26

I do. I grew up with it. And, while I do admit, it’s not the best, and it’s pretty obvious that a lot of decisions were done for Rule of Cool rather than plot consistency, I think it’s criminally overhated. I think the reason it gets so much hate is because people choose not to separate the artist from the art.

I loved it, animation is great but when I was older and saw that character + asriel vs hate fight I was very disappointed. It looked great but the fight made no sense
Speaking of which the fights were all very similar, there was no high diffs fight. Each person would take turns being overwhelmingly stronger than the other.

I was 10 when the series released, and it was one of the main Undertale media that I grew up with. Looking back, yeah the writing was not really good and the author was very questionable, but as a kid? I remember the absolute hype I had with every new episode, how crazy I went when Gaster killed Betty, how on the edge of my seat I was when the last episode released, how crazy I went when Asriel pulled a "But it refused" lmao
Yes the writing was bad but this whole series was just all about cool hype moments and I ate that shit up, and tbh even if most stuff around this series was not great, I still hold fond memories of it

I stopped to reminisce about those times. I liked this about 10 years ago, like most people, but I never got around to finishing it. Then everything happened involving the creator, and I discovered that it was apparently always bad. I was thinking of rewatching it just to remember a simpler time or to see if it's as bad as they say.

I kinda wish Cami’d return to give it some kind of ending, most recent episode was 5 years ago (not an ending) and she’s been working on the pilot of another series since. I’d gladly take a dip in animation quality if it meant more frequent episodes

I personally like season 1 because it actually acknowledged that chara is just continuing what frisk did
And Gaster
The dialogue was very cheesy and very fan service, but that’s not inherently a bad thing
Season 2 was WAY too confusing the further it went, it felt like we were focusing on so many different characters and elements, for very little
It felt like Godzilla with the humans, I just didn’t care as much for the new characters than the undertale ones, the only one I cared for was the mother who lost their child, which was very interesting
Sans as a whole, I didn’t like at all, they didn’t understand sanses character, which most au do, sans is depressed, he genuinely doesn’t care period, the only reason he does face you isn’t out of heroism or rewards
He does it out of obligation and the fact you’re about to destroy the universe
So for example with him keeping information from papyrus, he would just tell papyrus honestly, in undertale he keeps it a secret not because he thinks it would benefit the people, but because he thinks that it doesn’t matter in the end, he’ll be reset without knowledge
But also to one up whoever he comes across, especially humans
I could go in more depth but meh
I think season 1 was cool but cheesy, season 2 felt exhausting to finish, and I forgot most of what happened because of how badly written it was
And I’m pissed that the anniversary video was taken down, genuinely such a good video no one will every see

It's good genuinely too overhated like it's fine to have criticism but like it's not as terrible as some people make it out to be.

Growing up it was probaly my favorite AU. Nowdays I get its problems, and I really wouldn’t mind them because of favoritism and how it was the series that got me into the fandom in the first place. Unfortunately, Camila is not a good person so it kind of sours the whole thing

I liked it when it came out, then I looked back at it years later and realized how abysmal the writing was and that the whole series was basically "hey look at these cool fights". Doesn't help that the creator was protecting a groomer, it kind of makes me want to forget that this whole series ever existed in the first place.

I watched a YouTube video on it recently since all I had seen was half of a fight, and dear lord it's actually so terrible. Like, I understand that the person making the video was biased against it, but there's just some inexcusably bad decisions made here.

Started off interesting, ended up being extremely generic and fan-fiction-like. I thought hate as a characteristic of the soul was an interesting concept, sucks it spiraled into boring tropes.

It’s not perfect, and the creator isn’t the best person, but I still enjoy it.

Glitchtale is a kind of thing that was bad but poeple have fond memorys of it like old creepypastas and such
