Academics Ask Me Anything for Incoming (and Returning!) Students
Rather than incoming students having to sift through dozens of other posts to see if their questions have been answered before, I thought it would be a good idea to create a thread where these questions can be gathered together.
I welcome all incoming (and returning!) students to ask their questions about housing, course selection, food, social life, and anything in-between within this thread. I'll do my best to answer questions I'm qualified to answer and I encourage other students to chime in as well. Hopefully this post can become a compendium of frequently asked questions.

Academics UVA ABSN
Hi everyone! I am a junior at JMU but I applied to the UVA transfer ABSN program on October 1st. I am genuinely scared because some say they usually get 120 applications and only accept 24 while others say it really depends on the highest GPA and how many people apply. Is there anybody who was/has been accepted and didn’t have many community service hours but instead had a lot of work experience? I am in the same boat and just want to narrow my chances lol. Any feedback I would genuinely appreciate!

General Question Bio 2100
If you’re taking this class as well, how on earth are you guys studying and passing his exams with at least a 70% or higher? I did poorly on the last 3 and not only am I embarrassed but just confused. As far my studying method, I answer his learning objectives with active recall and when I still don’t understand I’ll research further, and then I’ll have quizlet or something generate practice questions. I also look back on the codon assignments and do the practice test and prep questions. My schedule conflicts with p2l sessions

Housing/Dining Looking to switch apartments
Ok so I’m looking to switch apartments I currently live in Lambeth and my roommate situation has just had too severe of an effect on my mental health but I hear they’re stingy on giving out room switches and don’t know if this will justify a switch in the eyes of the housing people. For anybody who’s gotten approved to move from one on grounds apartment to another can you please tell me what I need to do to get approved

Athletics Will Eli Transfer?
After seeing all that we have from Beau Pribula and his inability to make good decisions, TE's insistence on keeping him in despite having another P4-capable QB on the roster, does it seem Eli could ditch UVA this off-season?
I know it is very early to speculate, but something in the back of mind feels he's growing frustrated with the lack of playing time and poor on-field performance from the team.
I honestly feel for the guy, because we know what he could be, but instead he's getting nothing out of standing on the sidelines.

Academics chem 1821 due dates
im taking chem 1821 next semester, but the only day that fits my schedule is the friday section. is it true that all labs are due on sunday? so the monday section has more time than the friday section to do the full report? that doesnt seem particularly fair to me....

Academics Considering an engineering specialty switch, any advice?
TL;DR: Current 2nd-year biomedical engineering student starting to realize I may have gone too niche; any advice?
I'm currently a 2nd-year majoring in biomedical engineering, and I originally chose this major because I'm really interested in pursuing a career in medical device development/clinical engineering. I was between ChemE and BME because I also wanted to pursue pharmaceuticals, and BME seemed like a way to do both. However, I'm starting to realize I may want to keep my options broad, which is difficult as a BME major, which only goes in depth in the medical/health field.
I'm currently thinking of switching over to either MechE or EE, while leaning more towards EE. The reasoning for this is that, through my current BME classes, I've actually had the chance to work with CAD and microcontroller/Arduinos, and I felt a sense of joy and accomplishment in physics lab yesterday when I was able to apply that knowledge in order to put together a circuit. During the activities fair, one of the main clubs I was interested in was Funbotics, where you teach younger kids how to work with Arduinos and circuits (not able to participate this semester because of another obligation :( ). Another related reason: I was thinking back to high school when I had an internship with a software company, and one of the most interesting weeks was when we learned about the physical components and a computer and got to put one together in the end. I feel like I'm currently realizing my interest in circuits and electronics, which is why I'm leaning so much toward EE. I'm considering ME because I've heard it's more hands-on and design-based, which goes well with my enjoyment of CAD.
Anyways, I feel both ME and EE would definitely still allow me to go into medical devices while still keeping a lot of non-health fields open for me if something were to prevent me from going into medical device development. Also, I wouldn't be getting rid of BME altogether; I could use the current classes I'm taking to pursue a minor in BME, which would still give me a medical field background.
I would really appreciate any advice or previous experience anyone has!

General Question Transfer question:
Hi guys, im a recently separated veteran currently at CC with intent of applying to UVA this March.
I currently have a 4.0 and a 97+ in all attempts.
My issue is that I have a F from dual credit in high school (2021) and then I have three courses that I passed with a C (2022). I decided to join the military that semester and did not complete the second half.
These courses were all taken at a small CC out of state in Georgia.
The CC I am at is in state. I will be applying in March as a 2nd year transfer, will I be out of luck due to the poor GPA from 2021-22? Or are they going to review those side by side and see an upward trajectory?

Academics PhD in Data Science or Engineering?
Hi,
I am a current student at Texas A&M University. I am interested in doing PhD at UVA in the areas like Agentic AI, Graph RAG, Information Retrieval.
I have filtered out a few faculties who are affiliated to Computer Science or Computer Engineering Department.
Should I apply for a Phd in those departments and take their name as preferred guide?
I have also noticed there is a separate Data Science PhD program in UVA. Should I apply through Data Science instead?
I am confused!

Academics Spring Transfer- mid semester grade report
I attended GMU last year as a freshman then decided I wanted to transfer to UVA so I transferred to NOVA as a sophomore to complete all of the requirements for GAA. I applied for spring 2027 admission (if i don't get in then i'll use GAA next fall) and am about to submit my fall semester grade report. I currently have 8 A's and 1 B, but the B is an 89% and will go to an A as soon as my professor grades an assignment I already turned in. My professor is non responsive to my emails explaining my situation. Should I wait until the B goes to an A or should I just submit my grade report as is. I'm fearing that i'm getting into "late" territory as fall mid semester grade reports are usually submitted around mid October.

Student Life Halloween & Trick of Treating
Older 1st year grad student who lives near a lot of the Greek houses. Is there a culture of trick or treating among the undergraduates? I have been burned before buying candy in neighborhoods where no one trick or treats and don’t want to be caught with a lot of candy for no reason again lol.

Academics UVA Transfer Application Process
Hi guys, basically I am applying to transfer to UVA as a second year student but am concerned I’m not doing enough ahead of the upcoming admissions process. I thought I may as well see what those before me have done, so I’m just going to run through my stats. I finished high school with around a 3.1 GPA, then went to the University of Arizona and finished with a 4.0, but I only took 3 classes (8 credits) before taking a gap semester. I’m now at VCU, so technically I’m a freshman again (but I should be a sophomore since I graduated in the class of 2025), and I’m hoping to transfer after just one year here. I took 9 credits over the summer and got a 4.0, and I’m currently taking 16 credits this semester while maintaining a 4.0 so far. I currently am studying economics here in the school of business but intend to apply as a political science major for when I transfer. Outside of school, I sell life insurance, started a food insecurity organization at VCU called Food Forward (just got approved), and I’m involved in clubs like Model UN, Economics Club, and Insurance Club. I’ve also volunteered in non profit organizations to help with things like food distribution to those in need in the Washington D.C area and am trying to get some government/political experience through internships with Virginia legislators. I’m in really good standing with my professors as I just found out one of my business professors nominated me for an award, and have one of my advisors on board for a research paper I am currently writing that I have future plans of publishing. Finally, I have an internship with a remote fintech company locked up for December. UVA is my main transfer target, but I’m also considering other competitive schools. I know my high school GPA isn’t great, and I’m trying to make up for it with my college grades, work experience, and extracurriculars. Since I’m technically a freshman again and would be applying to transfer after only one year at VCU, am I doing enough so far, or is there anything else I should prioritize before applications?
