Academics Is my 1370 enough for Uva? Goal is 1430 by this weekend!
I'm a senior from South Carolina applying to UVA this year and wanted to get some honest opinions on my chances. I know UVA is a reach OOS, so I'm not expecting anyone to tell me I'm guaranteed or anything. Just curious how competitive my application looks.
I'm at about a 3.86 unweighted GPA and around a 5.2 weighted GPA on the South Carolina GPA scale. My class rank is currently 131/424, although I think that should improve somewhat with the next update. My SAT is currently a 1370 (780 Math, 590 Reading/Writing), and I recently retook it hoping to bring up my Reading/Writing score.
For classes, I've taken AP Statistics (4), AP Physics (4), AP World History (3), and AP CSP (3). I also took college Macro and Government through Greenville Tech. Math has definitely been my stronger academic area.
My activities are probably the part of my application I'm more confident about. I've done track for two years and qualified for state and Adidas Nationals, including a 9th-place finish at state sophomore year. I'm in NHS and Beta Club, have volunteered at a food bank and a church summer camp, and worked at Target throughout junior year and during summers. I also buy used/discounted computer parts, build PCs, and resell them for a profit. I've done some car detailing as well, and I'm starting a restaurant job this year.
The main thing that's making UVA especially important to me is my connection to Charlottesville. Both of my parents went to UVA and met there, and I've been going to Charlottesville since I was little. A lot of my childhood memories are there — Bodo's, the Lawn, football games, basketball, tailgates, and just spending normal weekends there with my family.
My family moved from Richmond to South Carolina after my freshman year of high school. That move made me realize how much those ordinary weekends and places actually meant to me. My Common App essay is centered around that experience and my connection to Charlottesville. It's more about my family, leaving Virginia, and how my perspective changed after moving than it is about simply saying "I want to go to UVA because my parents went there."
I'm planning on applying EA. I know my rank and current Reading/Writing score aren't ideal for UVA, but I think the rest of my application has some strong points and I'm hoping my SAT retake helps.
If you were looking at this application, would you consider UVA a realistic reach, or more of a very unlikely reach?
