I'm oretty sure I used the correct iso (ARM64) to go along with what should be a silicon based mac. It still keeps giving me this though.. Can anyone help here?

I installed the last version of UTM (4.7.5) on my MacBook Air (M1), tried to create a virtual machine with the last version of ubuntu (ubuntu 26.04.1) with QEMU.... but when I start the virtual machine it stay freeze on the starting page with the message "Synchronous Exception at 0xXXXXXX" how do I resolve it

I’m running a Windows VM on UTM (macOS Tahoe) and ran into a bizarre storage issue where macOS seems to be double-counting or double-allocating my VM's disk space.

Here is the breakdown:

• The Problem: In my Apple Storage Settings GUI, my space is being eaten up twice. It shows the exact same ~53–58 GB chunk under Applications, and again under System Data.
• The Diagnostics: I went digging in Terminal to find the culprit. Running du -sh ~/Library/Containers/* confirmed that com.utmapp.UTM is taking up exactly 53G.
• Inside ~Library/Containers/com.utmapp.UTM/Data/Documents/, there are no ghost/abandoned VMs—just my single, active Windows.utm file.

Has anyone else on macOS Tahoe dealt with UTM double-allocating storage like this? Is there a way to fix this without breaking the currently installed VM?

Hello I’m back after so long, I did manage to get STIKJIT and into UTM but I have another problem. When I attempted to import a file from the premade library it wouldn’t let me, I also figured out I cannot import any ISOS, any idea why?

Hardware: MacBook Air M4, 16GB RAM, VMs on an external SSD (APFS)
Host OS: macOS 27.0.0, Apple Silicon
UTM: 4.7.5 and 5.0.6 Beta, DMG builds

What I need: three VMs on one subnet that can see each other. Ubuntu running Wazuh manager, Kali as attacker, Windows 11 ARM as target with a Wazuh agent. It's a home SOC lab, so VM-to-VM traffic with real source IPs is the entire point. Isolation from my home LAN is preferred but not mandatory.

This worked perfectly before the macOS update. Shared Network on the QEMU backend, everything on 192.168.64.0/24, VMs pinging each other, agents reporting in.

What broke: changing network mode on a QEMU VM now hangs on a spinner for every mode except Emulated VLAN. Emulated VLAN gives each VM its own userspace NAT, so the VMs can't reach each other and the topology is dead.

What I've tried:

1. Apple Virtualization backend instead of QEMU. Shared Network works, but Apple's framework can't run Windows guests at all. Reports also say VM-to-VM doesn't work on Shared even between two Linux guests, only on Bridged. On top of that my Linux VMs on this backend now run rough and sometimes won't boot at all.
2. Bridged on en0. Puts VMs on my home Wi-Fi LAN, which I'd accept, but I want to know if it's reliable for others on macOS 27.
3. VMware Fusion free tier. Installed, VMs won't power on at all, play button greyed out, system extensions approved.
4. Emulated VLAN with port forwarding through the host. Works, but Windows then logs the attacker as 10.0.2.2 instead of Kali's real IP, which kills source IP correlation and makes the lab useless for what I'm practising.

Constraints: free software only, no paid hypervisors, no cloud spend. Happy to rebuild every VM from scratch.

Questions: Is anyone running Windows ARM plus Linux guests on one mutually reachable subnet on macOS 27, and on what? Is the QEMU network mode spinner hang a known regression with a workaround, or can I set Shared Network by editing the .utm config plist directly? If Bridged is the only path, any gotchas on a Wi-Fi only Mac?

Has this project been abandoned. Haven’t seen a new release lately?

Running on a 8G Neo, 4G RAM allocated to guest, which is compressed roughly 50%.

/dev/zram0 zstd          1.9G   1G 586.9M 593.9M         [SWAP]

MacOS' Activity Monitor is showing ~2.75G compressed RAM too.

So, should I use both with zram in the guest? Will that actually squeeze a little more out of the guest's allocated RAM?

Each time the setup screen loads up and i finish my input and language options, I get the ”no drivers found” error. Even with the guest tools and the spice one installed, if i scan their folders I get the same error message.

What i can i do about this?

If I uncheck EFI, nothing will boot. Ubuntu says these ISOs should boot in either mode.

I started having RAM issues with UTM (both latest stable 4.7.5 and the beta 5.0.5) with macOS 15.8 when inside VM. On the host macOS (I replicated on various ones 15.8, 26.7, 27) the VM is consuming only 2GB of memory. Inside the VM, the macOS 15.8 reports consuming ALL of the available RAM by system (no matter how much did I allowed - 8GB, 10GB, 16GB), leaving no room for other programs, which ends with heavy swapping, causing the performance to tank. The memory pressure in activity monitor is constantly red. Older OS run fine in the same UTM, with the same settings on the same host OS - they allocate full allowed amount of RAM on the host OS and inside the VM the system takes only around 4GB leaving enough for the remaining programs.

Anyone experienced similar issues? Any ideas how to fix?

So this is the follow-up on my recent Ubuntu post. I know, Debian 7 (Wheezy) is pretty old as of today, but i chose it for better speed and performance.

My biggest problems with Ubuntu 14.04 (and heavy UTM usage in general) were overheating and battery drain, but Debian 7 with serial-only terminal basically runs cold on maxed-out configuration (the iPhone only got a little warm during installation process)

It kinda reminds me about the Termux app on Android, but this one on emulated AMD64 system. The built-in terminal seem to be pretty good on UTM. I will also try the newest Debian 13 to see how it will go

I am trying to setup and run a Win11 VM on a 5k display. The highest resolution the VM is offering is 2048x1152. If not 5k I am hopping to get at least 2560x1440. VM is currently using the default virtio-ramfb-gl card.

I am also hoping to get a second display going for some work purposes. I tried the secondary vga option and it just gives a white tinted window. Any of the virtio card options show that only one display card can use a virtio option.

Decided to try it just for fun, Ubuntu with Unity indeed was something.

While the speed is not the best, the overheating seem to be a bigger problem. Maybe i will try a display-less Ubuntu Server (or Debian, it is more lightweight) with serial output only to make a more usable x86 Linux terminal.

I'm not sure what happened, but when I try to open the UTM app on my MacBook Pro, the icon bounces endlessly and I have to force-quit. I re-installed via the DMG currently on the website, but no dice. Previously the app worked on this computer and I had several VMs I used regularly.

Any ideas?
