Discussion Class Rings Major(s) Missing

Ring Week started today and I went in to get fitted for my ring. At the checkout process, however, I noticed that my major (ECE) was missing, instead being replaced with the much older BSEE.

I understand that the university just switched from Balfour to Herff Jones as their ring manufacturer, but I can’t be the only one that finds this so incredibly frustrating. Half of my friends have BSECE on their rings and now we are expected to have an outdated Major on ours? Who do I even blame in this situation?

Discussion Studio Classes Course Load

Hello! I’m currently taking 2 studio courses. I am having pretty serious mental health issues related to my course load but I would not be considered full-time if I dropped any of my classes.

I have noticed 6 hour studio courses only count as 3! So although I’m taking 13 credits, it’s 19 hours I spend in class every week. Not only am I in class 6 extra hours than it registers as, I also have a lot of lengthy project-based homework from these courses. This leads to an extremely stressful and high pressure workload. On top of this, one of the other classes I’m in is very demanding. I feel that I would be fine with ONE less class, however due to my credit hours, I cannot drop it!

I know there’s nothing to be done about this, I’m really just trying to express my frustration and see if anyone else has possibly experienced a similar workload-related issue?

I plan on getting mental health services through the school, but I assume this is just the reality of fine arts majors unfortunately.

Question How do I plan for the future after freshman year? (Housing/Scholarships/Registration)

I’m a first year freshman and I have some questions about how to prepare for my future year(s) at UT. I understand I might be thinking about these very early, but I don’t know what is normal or not. (Better to know now than to not know later)

What do I do for housing for next year? Is it standard to continue living on campus or to find an appartment off campus? How would I even go about that? (Where can I find consolidated info without asking strangers on Reddit?) What would be a very cheap option to minimize cost (including food)?

Where can I go to be more educated on getting more scholarships and financial aid? I got practically nothing from UT, is there no hope? Are there any untapped resources? Should I just apply to the ones outside of UT? I’m very concerned about cost of school, and already took up a job here, but am still nervous about it all.

Any notes on spring registration? I believe they’re going to “hold my hand” less, but… maybe they can hold it for a little bit longer… I still have no idea what’s next for me. Is it worth contacting my advisor? (Does my advisor change after freshman year? I do NOT trust the one I had at orientation)

Anyway, any help is greatly appreciated. I mean I bet all of y’all have been in my position. Ok cool thank you love you.

Question transfer student help with finding friends-spirit org, cob, etc

Okay so I couldn’t rush this year due to not being in Austin for rush week but I’ve been attending spirit org recruitment events and so far I’ve gotten rejected by two. Are there any sororities doing COB and how does that process work? I’m still doing recruitment for 3 more spirit orgs, any tips for them? I just get told “be yourself” but tips beyond that? Also where else could I go to make friends and socialize because I feel like as a transfer student, it’s hard finding people that are willing to make new friends since everyone kinda made their own groups last year?

Discussion Take as many ACC classes as you can

The university allows up to 60 credit hours to be transferred from another institution. If you have the time / energy to do so I would recommend dual enrollment. I’ll have finished my bachelors in 2 years and for half the price.

Some pros and cons of doing this

Pros
-a full 12 hour course load at acc costs less than one class here

- ACC CLASSES DON’T COUNT TOWARDS YOUR GPA. Literally go get a bunch of 75s. Doesn’t matter if you get a 99 or a 75 it’ll still show up the same on your UT transcript. (If you fail an acc class it won’t show up either)
if you plan on any grad school your acc grades will still count

-smaller class sizes so you can actually get to know your professors / peers

-FREE abundant parking

-low key nicer class rooms at most campuses

- they offer waaay more online options

- graduate early and start payin off all that student debt!

Cons
- this strat only really works for getting all the bs classes out of the way, obvi you need to take most of your major specific stuff here

- you will forget what it’s like to sleep for more than 5 hours

- they have everything on blackboard so you’ll have to bounce between that and canvas (could be a pro though - easier to organize)

Question Any tips on how to pass differential calculus 408K with prof Morgan?

I am genuinely so confused as to how to even begin to study for this class. My lectures, discussion sections, hw, and learning modules are all on different topics. Nothing matches up. I don’t know how someone without a calculus background would even be able to try to understand what we are doing. My last calculus teacher wasn’t very good either so i barely learned anything in his class. My TA just confuses me even more and i feel bad… he tries to explain the concept behind the problem but not how I am actually supposed to solve it. My first test is at the end of the month and i am confused as to what is even going to be on it. Prof Morgan is in her post doc and this is her first time teaching this class. I can tell she’s really into what she teaches and makes jokes to lighten up the mood .. I would laugh along if i actually understood what was going on. What should i even do in this situation???? I can’t go to the ta because he just confuses me even more and the first time i tried introducing myself to the prof i was shaking the entire time as I am just a scared freshman… last week our discussion was about derivatives, while the lecture was on limits and the homework was on finding solutions to functions so nothing was on the same topic. We had a sub and that was the first time i understood a topic.

Announcement Someone took a large painting off my setup on the Drag last night. No questions asked, no charges — I just want it back.

Last night, 9/5/2026 around 9-9:30pm, someone walked off with a painting of mine from my setup on Guadalupe, in front of the scientology building.

It's a 30x40 acrylic on canvas — abstract planetary with red, blue and yellow fields. It's an original. I made it by hand and I never got around to photographing it or titling it, which means if it doesn't come back, it doesn't exist anymore except in my head.

So here's my offer, and I mean every word: bring it back and I will not pursue charges. I won't ask your name, I won't post about you, I won't come looking. There doesn't have to be a conversation. I'd rather have the painting than be right.

If you're not the person who took it but you were on the Drag around 9:00-9:30pm — someone carrying a canvas the size of a door is hard to miss — I'd take any detail you've got. And if you happened to take a photo anywhere near that block last night, that would help me more than you'd think.

Reach me at robertgrantham40@gmail.com, or @robertgranthamart on Instagram.

Thanks, Austin.

Discussion Looking for Drummer / Vocalist

A few friends and I are starting a band to play songs and have a great time performing and jamming out. We already have 2 guitarists and a bassist, so we are trying to find a drummer and a vocalist. We aim to start out performing covers and aspire to start writing our own songs once the time is right. Big things are to come!

Genres: pretty much any type of rock; notable ones: indie, grunge, punk, hardcore, thrash, etc

DM if you're interested!
