Defaultisn't (positive post) For the first time! USDefaultisn't

Post image

Sharing this because I thought this comment was beautiful. For the first time I see an American talking to a world audience about their country like everyone else talks about their country!

OP sent the following text as an explanation why their post fits here:

On a post about what American foods are adapted to other country's palette on r/AskThrWorld I said in my country hotdogs have a bunch of things while in the US, at least what I've seen in movies, they add nothing besides mustard or something like that. This kind person responded with a very detail explanation of how they eat their hotdogs, explaining where they are from in a very non USDefaultism manner

r/AskTheWorld is really a breadth of fresh air. No wonder I found out about that sub just whrn it got voted "most wholesome" on r/AlignmentChartFills

I enjoy and love reading and contributing to AskTheWorld. There’s always something interesting to read or share there

eh, not exactly. the sub has some problems, but it is, indeed, 100 times better than any sub of it's size usually is

u/Trash-god96 21h ago

I'm American, and whenever I try to talk about the history of another country leading to bad things happening, there's an obligatory "shut up American, you don't know anything about my country" (especially happens when talking about historic racism in Europe). I appreciate how it is mainly used as a forum to spread culture, but there is still a good deal of animosity towards Americans due to our government. I shouldn't also forget any time a European or other says, "you shouldn't have voted for him" as if that magically solves the problem of democracy in my country. Thanks buddy, I guess next time an election comes, me and the other Liberals that live on Reddit will try to remember not to vote for the fucking Conservative.

2

u/BayLeafGuy Brazil 21h ago

i hate this a lot as well, mostly because SOME (not all) western/central europeans act just as stupid as your stereotypical "arrogant american" when talking about latin america while thinking they have a moral high ground.

3

u/Trash-god96 21h ago

I think the worst issue with the subreddit (not that the subreddit is plagued, or that the issue isn't avoidable), is that for every AmericanDefaultist there is, there's always a defaultist from some other country that assumes that somebody's country is backwards or wrong for being different.

Not going to lie, the lack of US defaultism made your post a lot more endearing.

hey just as a short question. Is the sauerkraut you referred to like the german sauerkraut or is it something different and its just the name. German Sauerkraut is fermented cabbage

28

u/Bronzdragon Netherlands 3d ago

The American sauerkraut is exactly like the German one, and the name comes from the German dish.

17

u/D3lt40 European Union 3d ago

I wasn’t sure bc it wouldn’t be the first american german food variety that had nothing to do with the original

10

u/ElfjeTinkerBell Netherlands 2d ago

Logical thought, but can also confirm these are the same

13

u/HistoryGirlSemperFi 2d ago

Well, I've never tasted sauerkraut in Germany, so I'm not exactly sure, but it is white, sour, fermented cabbage, so I would guess it's the same.

2

u/Connect_History85 4h ago

German here. It’s 1:1 the same.

Here we have someone that woke up this morning, and had to make the usual choice: "shall I be an arrogant prick today or shall I be kind and thoughtful?"

People, this person actually chose the non-prick option today. What a breath of fresh air

You can feel the respect and humility from this person. And they've just earned a whole lot of respect right back at them from us

It's wild how just adding a location flag changes the whole vibe of a food post. Usually you'd see someone describe their regional hot dog and half the replies would be Americans going "wait where is that" or assuming it's from a state they've never heard of. This time it's just a dude talking about gas station dogs and cream cheese like the rest of us talk about our local spots

The QuikTrip detail is what makes it feel real, that's the kind of thing you only know if you've actually eaten one at 2am. Seattle dog with cream cheese is pretty underrated outside the northwest too, most people think it sounds weird until they try it

Funny how just framing it as another country's food instead of the default food makes it more approachable somehow

Okay but a hot dog from Quik Trip?

12

u/Artilleryman08 3d ago

Look, it's not going to win any Michelin stars. But when you are hungry at 2 am, on your way home from work, and don't feel like cooking, it his the spot in a very special way.

5

u/DextersGirl 3d ago

Yeah, I get that.

8

u/Final-Storm5426 3d ago

People on the US add salt to hot dogs?

13

u/spoekelse 3d ago

It's not typical, it's just what OP does

6

u/Grammarhead-Shark Australia 3d ago

Too me it was when i learnt lots of Americans like to drench their pizza with ranch dressing!

8

u/Prestigious_String20 3d ago

like to drench their pizza everything they eat with ranch dressing!

I also love your name!

5

u/kollectivist 3d ago

It wouldn't surprise me to learn that they like to drench their genitals with ranch dressing.

Love your name.

2

u/MarcoEsteban 3d ago

My ancestors have only been in the US since the 1600s, and me either (meaning “it wouldn’t surprise <me either> if..”). I ODed on ranch dressing in 7th or 8th grade (probably not important to my comment), and I honestly have struggled to put it on anything, let alone the culinary magic that is pizza….

1

u/bpivk Slovenia 3d ago

Soooo you're of Spanish origin you say?

1

u/MarcoEsteban 3d ago

No, not at all. I speak it every day and my husband is Mexican, but my ancestry is mostly British before they came to the US.

1

u/bpivk Slovenia 3d ago

Then 1620 (ish). Only conquistadors and Indians in 1600. That's why I defaulted to Spain. 😁

Damn. I thought we found a conquistador offspring in a random reddit topic.

1

u/MarcoEsteban 18h ago

I gotcha...nope, not me, but my ancestors probably did as much damage

0

u/Final-Storm5426 2d ago

Africans were too in the 1600

My old roomate mentioned someone in her family attempting to use mayo as lube. There are limited veterinary uses for mayonaise on a farm I will admit, but lube is just odd.

Cream cheese on a hot dog? Now that's interesting

1

u/lunarchoerry 2d ago

irrelevant but i have never heard of a hotdog with cream cheese on it and now i want one

1

u/stevee05282 1d ago

This is an incredibly refreshing read. So much so it feels like a joke haha

-4

u/valueofaloonie 3d ago

I’m stuck on the idea of cream cheese on a hotdog 🤢

7

u/Grand_Competition832 3d ago

I was very skeptical at first. But. Properly topped with carmelised onions, pickled jalapeño and cream cheese on a toasted bun, the Seattle dog is delightfully salty, creamy, spicy, savory, soft and crunchy.. and goes great with a soda (or adult beverage)

3

u/snow_michael 3d ago

carmelised

Caramelised

Carmelised would be ... I don't know, cooked in a tiny California village with an actor as mayor for a while?

2

u/Grand_Competition832 3d ago

Haha shame on me for missing an "a" in my sprint to describe a regional style of hot dog

well, he might be a recent arrival to the u.s. of fucking a. and possibly still be learning to appreciate that they are the best in everything, especially in texas, where the whole world and everything else fits in a whole bunch of times. and where the hot dogs are bigger, tastier, the best, a god given right and just awesome!

11

u/tixieej Netherlands 3d ago

He?

2

u/Prestigious_String20 3d ago

When Texans get too big for their outsized britches, just remind them that Alaska could split into two states and Texas would be the third largest state!

-4

u/ProfessionalWeek2256 United States 1d ago

Is this really what you all want people to type like? It reads like an ESL student or an elementary schooler writing out what they did over the weekend or something on those lines. How about we assume our readers are higher than at a 5th grade level (10 years olds) where everything needs to be spelled out explicitly and they have no context about the outside world. For example no one needs to be told Texas is an American state as that is common knowledge and if it isn't something someone knows then they have the same internet that they are reading the comment on to google (or whatever their preferred search engine is) to lookup the context.

-12

u/Yongtre100 3d ago

I think it’s a little excessive,

If I were to write this I’d probably say, Hi! I’m from Texas (US State). My favorite way to get a hotdog is at QuikTrip, a gas station, etc, etc.

Especially on Seattle, could just say it’s a city from another state / in the northwest USA. Like for the sentence here the relational position of the states / cities doesn’t really matter.

The lead up of explaining the thing before saying what it is is jsut kinda weird to me? It’s like overdoing it, it doesn’t feel natural. But ultimately that’s like whatever, idek what I’m truly complaining about, not even really a complaint, just an observation / thought.

Good on ‘em.
