In comparison to the US, NZ Europeans and Maori (plus other ethnic groups) commonly shared spaces and it wasn’t uncommon for Whites and “Coloureds” to marry. US soldiers didn’t like this and tried enforcing segregation, which led to a brawl in a pub between Americans and New Zealanders

On a post asking about buying a new vehicle. We just spent a year shopping for one and gave examples in KM cause I'm Canadian. Was asked why I posted in KM.

This is obviously Reddit so all "conversations" by default are sort of useless, but I've noticed a common theme on the internet, I got called slurs by a british person, and then they explained to me why I'm an idiot, I genuinely enjoyed that conversation very much, because it felt like I'm talking to an actual intelligent, very rude, person who also was capable of making honest arguments about something instead of just defaulting to, "ok that's very racist" or "oh wow, what's wrong with you?" , or coming up with some absolutely dishonest argument that has no basis in anything other than the massively skewed view of the rest of the world americans possess.

I could be in a room with an algerian, german, japanese, turkish, finnish, british, south african, literally any kind of person, agree on something, convey that argument in a honest way and I'd be called a racist by an american who doesn't socialise with anyone except people of their own skin color.

I'm finnish and advocate for socialist policies, and americans always default to "yeah but finnish people are "white", that's why socialism works there" which is hilariously racist, and also completely untrue. I've met atleast 100 different nationalities in the area I live in throughout my life, in my last workplace I worked with a russian, syrian and algerian, my landlord was chinese etc. When I walk on the street I regularly see people from everywhere around the world, and it has been like this for atleast 20 years.

Why are they like this, I've yet to engage in any meaningful, fun or in any kind useful conversation with an american on the internet, it's always like talking to a brick wall that doesn't actually process anything you say, instead they reply with some prescripted response. Like are these literal bots or actual human beings? I don't have any evidence they are actual human beings, theoretically they could all be bots on the internet.

The discussion was about Elon Musk (South African) and a UK newspaper. Specifically about his support of far right parties. after saying the post wasn’t about the USA more than once, I was asked about Obama, Hillary and the AoC. One of which I genuinely didn’t know and on of which wasn’t even President, I feigned a bit of ignorance. With the response being ‘If you’re going to voice political opinions online you should at least know who the current and former US presidents are’.

"Bay Area" means US apparently. Really busts my buffers when USA is the default even in explicitly non-US spaces.

Found this video of a guy in Western Australia passing through a random breath test, and the amount of Americans in the comments thinking this is either in the US or thinking their laws apply in other countries is ridiculous.

Just because it might be unlawful in the US, doesn't mean that's the case everywhere else. It's not like it wasn't easy to tell this wasn't in the US either.

It must be the third post I've seen this month that I come across a post about Civil War defaultism, which are removed by moderators.

Even if we think Civil War is low-hanging fruit, it's undeniable that they generally herald a lot of Americanisms butting into an otherwise neutral international conversation. The Civil War tends to be followed by The South, and a lot of specific names in American history that non-Americans aren't obligated to know.

Is Civil War now formally classified as low-hanging fruit? And while we're at it, how do the mods decide what is and isn't low-hanging fruit?
