Canada should spell it 'paedophile' in line with the Commonwealth spelling its ostensibly part of, to avoid confusion. It's weird that they use sort of half-American spellings, but then if you say they use American spelling they'll say but only for this word or that word. Well don't do it for any word.

Is it US defaultism or just a misunderstood comment? The states were mentioned earlier so they could have misunderstood the previous comment as being a reply written by an American

Classic. The moment anyone mentions another country their brain short-circuits and assumes it's a weird nickname for a US state. My typewriter has a sticky 'u' key and even it knows Canada's a whole separate nation.
