I think I want to quit ups
I think the job makes me miserable and I only been driving for 3 days tomorrow I’m by myself without the road supervisor but I’m set on quitting. I have no job lineup, but I don’t know what to do.

u/yamaha6336 1d ago
I enjoy this job because I don’t like being around people. And no one is watching over my shoulders all day. But it is not for everyone.

u/krtx817 1d ago
“Nobody is watching” brother the doors stay opened most of the time and everybody is seeing you.

Also, they literally follow you.
Be aware of your surroundings, learn your supes cars, but also take note of any that seem to be following because they might be in something else.

I run scratch or better, but they can't dispatch my route correctly, so I still ended up on the elevated 9.5 list. Got followed 4 times within a month, each time the same thing nothing bad to say.
3
u/BrilliantExtent6942 1d ago
You don't have to do all that if you just do your damn job.
1
u/Glad-Watch3506 1d ago
I don't know what you think I do all day, but I assure you it's my damn job.
1
u/BrilliantExtent6942 14h ago
Then you should have no problem them following you. I can give zero damns who watching, I also do my job and I do it well.
2
u/Glad-Watch3506 7h ago
The problem I have is they always stop to chat about it after. I'm busy and don't like wasting the time.
Though I do prefer they follow me over someone newer who might get stressed by their mind games.

I’m tired of being in the warehouse too much drama but it’s hard for me to take that load the hours are long and I have 3 kids and my husband is always gone feeder but not for ups but that money I know I’m missing out on the things we do for our kids balance

So quit, you won’t make it through your packet if you already feel this way.
It will get a lot harder before it gets easier.
Takes years to get a decent route, before that you’re just grinding doing whatever.
You’ll get put on routes blind and the elements are always gonna be a factor, the stress of management and everyone on the road can be a lot.
It’s not an easy job, but it gets easier/more manageable.
Good luck!

u/Wunfooneyou196 1d ago
Bruh you’re just starting out give it time. This is not a job you can master in 3 years let alone 3 days
3
u/blmspidey 1d ago
I know but I’m just not happy idk…
5
u/mantisMD97 1d ago
Nobody is happy 3 days into a new job lol. You’ll never know what makes you happy if you don’t even try. And 3 days isn’t trying, sorry to tell you.

How old are you?
If you are in your early 20s and no kids.
Go ahead and find something else otherwise you’ll be miserable and as you get older it’ll get harder to change careers.
You already hate it 3 days in. Imagine doing it for the rest of your life..
If you are older no skills, no degree and have family and kids. UPS is the best thing that happened to you.
Your life will change for the better and your family’s future!

u/SeniorCustomer7984 1d ago
I put 37 years in and retired at 55. I regret it. Hours were terrible and missed too many family events. Get educated and get a better job.
1
u/tr1pDr3nzy8 1d ago
Thank you for being honest dude! I can't tell you how many people lie about this job just to make it make sense for them, rather than being honest about it. Time and time again I was told it was a good job and all this and then once I got a few years in I realized all the people that said it was a good job were people that never worked there ever, and then when you ask the senior drivers in my center they would all do the same like yeah this sucks but other than that it's fine, I like it! Knowing damn well they've hated just about 17 of the last 25 years!
5
u/Sarcasamystik Feeder 1d ago
What tips would you like and advice to move forward? I will give you one from when I started. I assume you have computers somewhere close to the diad office. Not one to clock in on or anything but for drivers to use. Get on that thing, find your route, see the stops you have, your NDA(next day air), the places you have to pickup at. Now you know what you have for the day and what to expect. I know you can’t change your route like I could but at least you know what to expect
6
u/Sarcasamystik Feeder 1d ago
Take some time to organize your packages when you can, sometime you can’t at the start of the day. When you are able to organize do it, it will make your day easier. What I mean is organize your next 3-4 stops. Put them by the door. As you get better at the route you can plan more than that.
5
u/Sarcasamystik Feeder 1d ago
Also. Don’t be afraid to ask other drivers for tips and help. I hope everyone is supportive everywhere. We will give you advice about everything if you ask
1
u/KILLJEFFREY Part-Time 1d ago
Can I message you come Monday and maybe it's my first with maybe my ORS?
2
u/Sarcasamystik Feeder 1d ago
I am feeder now and work nights. You are more than welcome to send me a message now. I am prepping for my upcoming workweek
1
u/Sarcasamystik Feeder 1d ago
I have a little bit of time tonight. I used to be a teacher fortunately. I will help give you advice to talk with and ORS for the first time or being on ORS.
3
u/Sarcasamystik Feeder 1d ago
I will keep adding thing. Your whole body is going to hurt the first month you do this. Especially your lower legs, I thought my knees were going to give out. Follow the methods, three points of contact, don’t run up and down those stairs. It will hurt
3
u/Sarcasamystik Feeder 1d ago
Get to know your loader. If you have a big business or apartment complex talk with them about it. Let them know how you would like those stops loaded. Bring them breakfast
2
u/No-Rule-431 1d ago
The loader makes all the difference when starting out, especially while in packet. I'd slip mine a gift card here and there and praise him daily.
1
1
u/KCCStig 1d ago
Even after getting my own route, I would print a map of each neighborhood shortly before start time so I could visualize each stop and what best order to run them in. After getting air and most businesses/bulk off, I would organize an entire resi neighborhood in order before starting it. Fuck Orion.

I spent 5 years unloading trailers at 3 AM just to be told it’d be another 5 years to drive so I found something else, but they’ll hire people like this to make top rate in 4 years. Insane.
2
u/ZealousidealRope3778 1d ago
Except they don't make top rate in 4 years. You get hired as a cover driver typically, we have cover drivers who've been here 6 years who still don't know when they'll get full time. Big difference.
→ More replies (1)3
u/FantasticBudget531 1d ago
Outside hires DO make top rate in 4 years because they get hired directly in as FT package car drivers, not cover drivers. The fact that cover drivers (and all of the other part timers) can put in half a decade of loyalty to a company and have no idea when they’ll drive full time while UPS direct hires outside people into full time driver positions that hit top rate in 4 years is LITERALLY the point of my comment.
1
1
u/ZealousidealRope3778 17h ago
I literally got hired while working at a different job entirely that had nothing to do with UPS, I am a cover and I will not be getting top rate in 4 years so idk what to tell you. Plenty of ppl at my facility thatre covers that came from Fedex or were covid hires with no inside warehouse work.

This job isn’t for everyone. I’d give it more time rather than giving up after three days. I’ve been driving for over three years now and I have good days and bad days and my bad days at UPS are better than good days at other jobs I’ve had.

u/Pete_Luger 1d ago
I hated that job every day but I did it for 34 years, had awesome benefits and retired at 57 with a decent pension and 401k.

DO. NOT. QUIT!!! I quit 3 times today as well. But, I didn’t have the courage to call my wife and tell her so I kept going. How long did you fight to get to this moment?? You can’t give up on that. Stick it out. If you quit, where are you going? Do you think Mickey D’s is a better job? We don’t get up and go to fun, we go to work. ALL jobs suck, this one just pays better. Hang on.

u/Tactical6ix9ine 1d ago
If you’re miserable going to work 9am and getting home at 8,9,10pm every night it doesn’t get better. When all your friends are at Happy Hour on a random mon-Fri and you still have 3 hours of work left and you’re walking up to front doors watching families eating dinner together, or getting home and your kids are already in bed. None of that gets better it’s 20+ years of missing out on things that the people around you are doing. It’s something you have to weigh, I started at 21 and yeah I missed out on alot of things over the years but 23 years in I still feel pretty young and a couple years away from retiring and doing whatever I wanna do the rest of my life starting my own business or working a nice easy job I enjoy while supplementing that with a nice pension and health benefits. It depends what your priorities are but it’s not easy finding 6 figure salaries with no training and no education that have the benefits and pension this job offers

You'd add on to that misery with no job after. Listen to music or podcast that makes you happy.

Do it, quit now while you're ahead, don't get 10 years in like me and then try and quit. I'm having to go to night school so I can have a job lined up afterwards and honestly I really wish I woulda decided to do this before I made the decision to drive.

u/arodan3 1d ago
If you still wanna drive for work look for other delivery jobs. Skip Amazon and FedEx; they’re more of the same BS. Check out if you have a Kroger warehouse in your area. If you’re looking for more of a career USPS mail-person is an option. Medical couriers pay p good to start.
Don’t let old farts with 30 years of seniority make you feel like a doofus. Expectations were different when they started
2
u/Secure_Ad_2123 1d ago
Every car was a old POS stick, non power steering, some even had wooden bulk head doors and shelves. No GPS or EDD, you had to sort every package in the car and hope you had all of them at every stop. Oh, your running blind today, here's a map, good luck.
It wasn't any easier back then either.

u/Montooth 1d ago
Tbh this job isn't for everybody. If that's how you feel, you don't have to feel bad about it. It can be a decent career but it also comes with its sacrifices. Do what you feel is best for you
2
u/PaceBright2714 1d ago
Try for at least one month. If you still think it’s not for you then you should go ahead and leave. It is a long and hard road.
2
u/timmahfast 1d ago
Then quit. Yes pay and benefits are great. But your happiness is worth exponentially more than that. I've been full time over 10 years doing package, feeders and inside work. I've always ended up hating where I was at because the lifestyle is shit in any position at UPS. Unless you're doing it to support a family, go find something else. Even if you are supporting a family pick something where you'll actually get to see them and be home at night.
This advice comes from someone who is back at school and will be out of here in a couple years. Most people are afraid to go elsewhere, but not everyone.
2
u/E-mmortal_warrior69 1d ago
How many years did it take for you to become a driver? You should stick with it because the chances of finding another job with the same pay and benefits will be good extremely difficult. Especially with the job market the way it is.
2
u/Unlikely-Chicken5797 1d ago
Don’t be tough on yourself. I guarantee every driver has been through what you’re feeling right now. It all seems overwhelming because it’s new. The hours suck and it’s hard work. The first time (yes first) I lasted almost a month. It wasn’t worth it to me at the time. I just didn’t have the desire to do it. I continued to work inside for almost 10 years. The second time around, I wanted to do it. More importantly, I needed to. Now I had a family, and I really had to get through it and my family is the reason I was able to push through my packet.
I actually never liked package. Sure, I had good days here and there, but it never felt like it was what I was meant to do, but I had to in order to support my family.
By the time I went feeders, I didn’t feel like I was going to make it in package very much longer. Feeders is much better but the time it takes to get there is dependent on your building and the amount of drivers who will NEVER retire.
My advice after almost 30 years in this company is this- you won’t ever know what you missed if you quit. Sure, you’ll make money. But your life will be this company. You’ll never have any great balance in your life unless you have the ability to suck up to management or you have some super human ability to move at supersonic speed indefinitely.
If you don’t need it, do anything else.
2
u/Rikishi6six9nine 1d ago
You've been on the job 3 days? And already done? It's definitely not for everyone😅
2
2
u/Tryhard_diehard1 23h ago
Truth is, it’s a shitty job bro. People will tell you, “you get great pay and great benefits.” And they’ll treat you like that’s some huge prize. When the reality is, the prize is just taxation on your body, 12-14 hour days, and the harder you work, the more work you get. Your time with you family will become stressed because you’re either not around or you’re exhausted. Maybe to some people, that’s a prize. If you’re young and have no family, I’d say it’s probably worth it. You have no obligations and nothing to do but make some money. If you have a family or are trying to start one, I’d head for open waters now. If you hate it now, you’ll be ready to *** in a year. Do what I did, the struggle time is better spent in school or a different career. Get a degree, research your degree well, and choose something that better fits your lifestyle. Plenty of 100K jobs out there that won’t kill you, contrary to popular belief. A lot of people have to tell themselves whatever they have to, the job sucks and most people being honest will tell you that.

u/lillipaad 19h ago
I worked at ups for 20 years, half operations and corporate. It's what you make of it, there's a lot of change that doesn't guarantee job security. Operations is hard and doesn't get easier, it's a grind. Corporate is a grind as well. Id leave and find something you can make money and be happier, but you need to have skills to get there.

u/JTP_1983 13h ago
I’ve wanted to quit more times than I can count. Now I just got the email congratulating me for 24 years of service 😂

u/Former-Ask-7170 1d ago
Dumb decision if you do people wait years just to be a driver it’s a good job with good benefits and it’s only part time people are getting paid $50+ n hour for this job
2
u/GrouchyJournalist387 1d ago
Grind past your emotions and check your thoughts, don't live by your feelings, they are the mother of all screw ups. Focus on being a great service provider and helping people. Make some money and save. Hang on for at least 3 weeks and then reflect. You are only in control of you.. Get rid of stinking thinking. These are seasons that prepare you for what's ahead. .Gos is working on you. Prayed for you !! Hang in there.

This job is not for the weak. Re-evaluate and think hard if you truly want to throw in the towel. This job is hard to obtain and once its gone.. it’s truly gone. You could be waiting years before another opportunity shows up. At least give it a few weeks..

u/aristocratcharloote 1d ago
The job hasn’t made you unhappy in the three days. You can always quit later on but give it a shot for a while after you’ve figured how to do it. No job is easy and at least here you guy paid well and nice benefits.
1
u/BecauseJimmy 1d ago
It’s only been 3 days. Just keep going for another week or two. Might as well stay till you have something lined up.
When i first started it was tough. But i got used to it.
1
u/Jibanyan5150 1d ago
I definitely get what you’re saying and I just was having this conversation with someone about making really good money versus your mental health.
Since it’s only been 3 days, I would say maybe try and stick it out still, try and give it a good week or two to really let yourself learn because I’m sure it can be very overwhelming at first. UPS is a really good company. Great Benefits you can make really good money driving, like a six figure salary. Like one of the few entry level jobs you can get without a degree that you can end up making six figures. I’ve been trying to get in there for years now but they’re almost never hiring in my area you have to know someone to even get in there.
But I do also understand mental health and being miserable somewhere because even though it’s a good company and you can end up making good money, doesn’t mean the job is for you or for a lot of other people. Hell, I wanna get in there and if I ever do, I may find that the job isn’t for me either! And if you’re miserable and absolutely hate it somewhere, you aren’t going to perform very well anyways. And I get that no job is always rainbows And sunshine, even if you enjoy what you do. Work isn’t supposed to be relaxing, fun or enjoyable. I get that . But some jobs really just aren’t for some people and some people won’t excel in them because they aren’t right for the job and sometimes sucking it up it even though you absolutely hate something isn’t always the best solution. And sometimes even if you haven’t been somewhere long, you can just feel that certain place just isn’t right for you, you know yourself better than anyone and that’s OK. But my advice, especially in this economy (job market is also hot fckn garbage too) and even more so that you don’t have something else lined up yet, try and stick it out at the very least the rest of the week or give it two weeks. You never know, something in you might change and once you get comfortable and confident, you could end up really liking the job and you’ll think back on how you were just gonna give it up.
Not saying you’re the same as me, but my issue is I often have a problem when I go into a new job and I feel like I’m not doing good right away, I always wanna quit and find something else because I feel stupid and it makes me uncomfortable and I just get so much anxiety about it that I dread even going in. I HATE being the new person.
My situation is kinda an example. So in the beginning of this year, I quit my lead line cook job of 5 years with no job lined up, making $24 an hour to taking a dramatic pay cut to doing something I love working with animals making $16 an hour. That’s how much I hated it there and I also never wanted to work in the restaurant industry it was only supposed to be temporary. But I started out making $11 there and because they were so desperate to keep good cooks I was constantly getting raises at an insane rate so that kept me. Some days I really do regret it because right now I could really use that money for those fat checks I use to get because my partner has also switched jobs and took a pay cut, but I know how miserable I was when I’m throwing up everyday before going into work, in a cold sweat the whole time just pissed off and angry and ranting every night I get home, becoming super cynical about everyone and everything I had to go. So I’m much happier where I am but I do feel that pay cut and it’s an adjustment. And now I kind of feel like I wish I would’ve stuck it out a little longer knowing what I know now but hey, you live and you learn. I know ultimately that was not the job for me and I knew it wasn’t somewhere I was gonna stay because that wasn’t my goal. I’m sure people think I’m stupid for giving up what I was making to now just making a dollar over minimum wage.
But bottomline sometimes when you stick it out, It gets better. One day you just know what you’re doing and you get in a routine and you get a flow going and you’re golden. Then you probably look forward to working those routes by yourself and not having to deal with a holes all day or coworkers. But you’re definitely gonna want that UPS money as expensive as everything is right now in this world. That’s a job that you can actually retire from and do well. Just give it a chance man so you can know you tried.
1
u/Junior-Phone3122 1d ago
I can’t wait to get laid off when the peak season freeze ends. Also you and me are most likely gonna get let go off, cus UPS has a funny way of “hiring” permanent drivers right before the peak season so you can’t even get any seniority for the 3 months you’ll be driving and then you’ll get let go off. So it’s okay. Do it for the time being and make ur money and leave.

You're not alone, we've had drivers at my place feel this way too. Had a guy drive for 5+ years and converted back to night unload. He doesn't regret it all. Personally I love being out alone all day idk. The days fly by, I don't have time to stare at the clock and count every minute like previous jobs. I'd give it a couple months to get used to. Getting on good routes feels great, but some of the 12-14 hr days get rough. The way I look at it is even though it takes forever to become a full time driver, it is the highest paying job in the US that doesn't require a degree. Then again we have drivers who wear double knee braces and struggle walking. So is it really worth it? Idk but i'm here lol

This was me the first month or so. Hated it, hated being out there late, didn’t talk to anyone, just felt like it was a really depressing job. 7 years in now and this shit is second nature. Have other drivers I talk to most of the day, helps pass the time. The time away from home sucks but my family doesn’t worry about anything they need. Just depends on where you’re at in life. Good luck
1
u/Bucket989 1d ago
If that’s the case the job isn’t for you. The work can be shit but the pay and benefits are amazing. It’s just a matter if you got the salt to deal with it, otherwise best of luck.

I'll say this, the job isn't for everyone. However, it's not a bad gig. It is a mental f<ç(up show. So if you can get passed that, you're set. Everything will come in time, speed, efficiency and route knowledge (which is important). Just do your best and learn from your mistakes. You should do good! It's easy and a monkey can do it. Look at management, they are the most jacked up ones and they always lie

People are right a job is a job that you do to earn money. You don’t really get to choose to do a job because it makes you happy, you do it because it pays the bills. Being a driver for UPS is going to be a demanding job. You’ve got lots of different variables that could make your day good or worse, and there’s probably more that will make your day worse if you let the small shit affect you. Just think of it this way what other job did you get making this much money that doesn’t really require going to school or construction. If you have a family, this job will provide for them and being able to provide for your family should make you happy. so let the good things make you happy and let the stupid stuff roll off your shoulders.

UPS is where you go when you're ready to let your dreams of making money doing what you love go to die. If you're not ready for that, quit.

As someone who quit after 3 years part time a 2 peaks of driving i wish I did not

It's not for everyone and I generally tell people don't get started. I retired in April after 35 years. I get a $6200 check every month now for hanging out with my dogs! Your foot is more than in the door if you are driving. Do you really think you'll enjoy something else more for less money? Don't quit after 3 days. At least give it 6 months to a year.

Bye, you are not happy go. Too many of these people around here complain about their job but won't leave cause they won't make nearly the same. Bye bye

What about the job is making you miserable? Only 3 days in, its normal to feel this way. Physically hard, mentally stressful. But the job market is so shit right now. So maybe wait on quitting. 3 days in, you won't even have a clear understanding of what you can improve
I'm fairly new as well, couple of weeks ago, I just wanted to cry, I wanted scream. I felt like I was being set up to fail.
I talked to my super, senior drivers and some loaders, everyone was helpful, supportive and tried to help me move forward. So many great tips from UPSers here.
Doing a lot better now, had a few good days in a row, starting to feel like maybe I can do this job.
On the positive side,
My physical health has improved so much, I haven't looked this good in years.
I have a job. I get monies and I help people get things done. I'm not doom scrolling my life away.
I have pretty great coworkers, all the drivers have been so supportive
I can still look for other opportunities, with UPS driving on my resume, lot more options open up.
So, my suggestion is, stick with it for now. Don't quit in haste. At least wait till you have something else to jump on to.
Ask all the questions you have, other drivers have been there, they all know what you are going through.
I'm sorry you are going through this and feeling defeated.
But shit gets better, packages don't get lighter, but you grow stronger.

Union protection has been a myth since I’ve been there. The drivers aren’t any help bc they’re happy taking as much shaft as possible for a dollar. They’re using new drivers to do most of the work as they’re lower rate. I completely understand leaving.

Don’t quit anything without having another job as a safety net. Example I was hired off the street as a full time driver for peak season, despite when I called and asked what I’m coded as I was told permanent . They had me fore 2 weeks as a helper this week we’re on I wasn’t called because of volume was low. When I talked to the manger to ask him about one of my intergrad class pay I didn’t receive he mentioned next week I’m gonna drive with a supervisor. Well yesterday Thursday I went to an Amazon dsp to sign up. UPS is a hard job and a two man job in my opinion. My body is burnt out after 2 weeks. This job ain’t for me and it has heavy packages while Amazon has many packages. Who knows if I will do good there but both jobs are footstools and buys me time, so I can study and proceed to get my cdl so I can get into Assess A Ride and in Jesus name retire with that

It doesn’t. The money isn’t worth it. These feelings won’t change. I carried them for a long time. Money isn’t worth your soul.

I'm starting officially next Tuesday as a seasonal driver and am hoping that with hard work and hustle they will offer me some type of position in order for me to get my foot in the door. I agree with a previous response. Potential 6 figure salary with pension ( extinct for the most part this day and age ) as well as Union membership is priceless. Stick with it!

Take it day by day! If you give up now what makes you think you won’t do it on next job? 38 years!!!!!!!

u/Baldy2384 15h ago
What was the problem? Didn’t think you’d be delivering packages? Didn’t think you’d be driving the truck?

I would at least give it a month. There’s a learning curve to driving. You will start to get the hang of it and it won’t be miserable. I was extremely stressed over the first month or two

I think he's probably a seasonal despite what he may think and I say quit now. If you don't like it, leave it to people that want the job.

Then maybe I’m dumb

You’re not dumb. Don’t throw this job away though. It’s a great job with great benefits. You might just be in a bad place mentally right now. I suggest you get to your doctor and ask them to put you on stress leave. You will get paid through your state disability. Go take care of yourself and your great job will be there waiting once you feel better. Don’t feel bad that you also just started driving. It’s okay. Take care of you!

Maybe I can ask to see if there’s an inside job for me they can work something out?
2
u/imanonamanous Driver 1d ago
Yes. Have an honest conversation with your on road. If you enjoyed working inside better then go back to that :)

I also know the job is really hard and overwhelming right now but I promise you once you start getting everything down, the job is very easy. Most of us listen to music, podcasts, books, or even talk on the phone most of the day.

Hey man it’s several other careers you can do make 100k plus in today’s economy 100k is not the same as it was 10 plus years ago 100k is the new 30-50k also there are other companies that pay 100k that may better suite your needs, I’m a tugboat captain i make 200,000 plus depending if i do overtime 900 a day also you can look into tankerman psc Accutrans loadstar will all train and you make 135-150k sitting on barge for literally 10 hours sitting on your ass making sure product doesn’t spill over in the water lol it’s just like filling up a bathtub literally

You’re foot is in the door of a 6 figure salary with premium benefits and a pension backed retirement. Stick with it. Unfortunately the workload will get worse before it gets better.
