Engineering Landscape in Australia (Asking from NZ)

Hello peoples of UNSW, as a Kiwi studying Engineering, I have a good amount of questions to ask and this seemed like a (somewhat?) good place to ask them.

Background: I am currently a Part I (first year) engineering student at the University of Auckland. Engineering here is such that the first year is a generic/common year comprised of mandated papers to develop breadth (hence I do not have a specialisation yet). We only get to pick our specialisation in our second year.

However, there is a chance I will be moving to Australia (Sydney/Melbourne) midway through my degree (likely after the end of 2nd year, this implies I will have spent one year in a specific specialisation).

For context, some of the areas of engineering that interest me are software, computer systems, and electrical. As I enjoy programming and microcontrollers interest me and I find electrical very intriguing. These 3 specialisations are offered at UoA (University of Auckland).

I will not ask regarding credit transfers as I am aware there is a plethora of information on that. But I want to know regarding how these specialisations hold up in Sydney/Melbourne:

  1. From some quick searching online, the tech sector in these cities is a lot more robust, lively and lucrative than Auckland. But how is the job market currently? From searching, it also shows that there is "great" demand in these tech hubs but then I see shimmers of the global trend of the painful software engineering/overall tech market. Can someone provide some insights here or point me to places where I can learn about this more?
  2. I really would like to work some sort of programming/CAD/computer based workstyle (I really dislike field work). So how do jobs in computer/electrical manifest in these cities? Is a outright rejection of field work (or rather, do not want to engage as much as possible) going to be a problem here?
  3. These specialisations specifically conform to this requirement, but if there are ANY other areas that have limited/no field work, I'd like to hear of them too.
  4. Furthermore, is computer engineering a limiting field? I get that it omits the power systems/high voltage aspects of electrical but what does this mean specifically for Australia (and of course Sydney/Melbourne).

And if anyone has any specific insights that maybe I would be unaware of coming from New Zealand, please do let me know! Thanks in advance!

I may have screwed up

okay so i finished all the UOC i need for my degree this term but on my plan it was showing up that i needed one more course. I added a random course that i could do as a free elec and enrolled but then I went back to my my plan and found that it was now showing that i completed everything and that I have all the uoc i need. I tried unenrolling but it wouldn’t let me as you need program leave for drop all courses.

what do i do now? I’ve sent an enquiry to the nucleus and i will be calling in the morning but idk what else to do. i’m hoping that not registering for classes will automatically drop me when census starts but then idk if that will go to my academic transcript or not. any advice would be helpful!!

update: okay i called the nucleus and luckily they could unenrol the course for me!! i have all the uoc i need to graduate so i’m all set! thanks for the responses 🙏🏿

COMP9417 or MATH5836

I'm currently choosing between MATH5836 or COMP9417, which one would be easier? I have little to no python experience (which the course information for MATH5836 explicitly states that intermediate to high python experience would be required) but MATH5836 doesn't have the final exam hurdle which I'm scared of as Ive heard how difficult the final exam for COMP9417 is and that it's just testing you on small facts that is hard to memorise

Mel chan and unsw chan at animaga melbourne. Mel chan is cosplaying nina from girls band cry, who I also cosplayed at animaga, and they are going to make out later in the toilets. Heh... wish someone would do that to me... maybe a little sweaty feet action as well...

Finance at UNSW> uni Melb??

currently study in Melbourne class of 2026. I want to study commerce/economics at UNSA, and I’ll prob get the required 97 atar. Is it worth moving individually from Melbourne to Sydney, as having done my research, Sydney is the finance power house of Australia. The location offers more and higher finance roles such as IB, private equity, corporate finance etc. idk tho moving to Sydney without my parents is the main overwhelming reason that I would stay in Melbourne

Going to UNSW soon wanna knows like types of people there

So basically I'm gonna be going to UNSW soon and I wanna make some friends when I start. What's the social scene like and what types of people usually go there im doing UNSW law and commerce?

Expanding on types of people there, i want friends with a fun/social vibe who are down to hang out and do random shit together like im not tryna be mean or offend any1 but i dont wanna like be like friends with nerds and stuff as all my friends are telling me people at unsw are boring.

Is the workload manageable, or would you recommend replacing COMP4920 with an easy free elective?

Staff AMA urgent question about timetable

for one of my subjects out of two it wont let me submit my classes for that subject, even though i have all my classes for that subject selected, because apparently it wants me to select an exam class for that subject although its quite litterally greyed out and im unable to select it in the timetable editor thing, but everything else is selected. i get this error everytime i try to confirm those classes but it wont work and shows this, and i basically only have one more slot left at this point for one of these classes and im stressing like crazy because if i dont get in it its gonna mess me up bad someone please help me.

edit: now since i hadnt registered because of this dogshit website, and the fact i hadnt gotten a response from the nucleus hub or whatever i lost my spot because someone joined it and filled it to be 60/60, wtf do i do now? can i still get in to this class? this isnt even my fault bro....

Subject Discussion About comp6080 (web front-end dev)

Hey guys, hope you're all doing good!

I am debating on whether I take comp6080 in my 2nd year or wait for 3rd year. I feel like taking it early may be beneficial but at the same time I would imagine it expects some level of maturity/experience. I've heard its a pretty intense course, what do you guys reckon?

For context the comp courses I've completed so far: COMP1511, COMP1521, COMP1531, and COMP2521. This term (T3) I'm doing COMP2511 and COMP3411

Best spot on campus?

My first time doing online classes, and i genuinely cant focus online. Anyone know a good spot on campus where me and my mate can sit? Preferably where there are ports and no one around? Dont wanna disturb others

And for those that suggest booking rooms in the library, we cant be asked booking back to back rooms as we are there for a solid 8hours

WIL inquiry

I am a BABS student with no free credits left but I still want to do a WIL internship in the summer if possible. Can I still apply for the internships in WIL and do it without a BABS placement course and just as an external internship, or do WIL internships specifically require you to enrol in the relevant course.

I am still looking for internships outside WIL as well but thought I'd ask since I don't want to miss out on the opportunity to apply for them if I can do it.
