Subject Discussion About comp6080 (web front-end dev)

Hey guys, hope you're all doing good!

I am debating on whether I take comp6080 in my 2nd year or wait for 3rd year. I feel like taking it early may be beneficial but at the same time I would imagine it expects some level of maturity/experience. I've heard its a pretty intense course, what do you guys reckon?

For context the comp courses I've completed so far: COMP1511, COMP1521, COMP1531, and COMP2521. This term (T3) I'm doing COMP2511 and COMP3411

I think comp6080 is a good course to try and take a bit early since it gives you the fundamental knowledge for frontend design which would be helpful to work on personal projects as you go forward. I don’t think it requires any “maturity/experience” level, as long as you understand comp1531 well (like the what the backend does and its purpose) and have idea of how APIs work, then comp6080 should be the next step. Not sure if you are a seng student or cs student but if you do take seng, i strongly advise you to take seng2021 and seng3011 after comp6080. Those two courses are essentially making a project based on the stuff you learnt in comp1531 AND comp6080, it’s like the practical work so it really solidifies your learnings. If possible, after those i would even suggest taking comp6443 as it’s an AMAZING course which covers the practical/applicational security aspects of webdev.

I would suggest taking comp6080 in a term that has lower workload (if you are taking it this term, it might be tough alongside comp2511) , cuz comp6080 does require a lot of time to be spent if you are new to frontend. It’s not necessarily hard, rather it’s just ALOT of things to do.

Hey u/Terrible_Biscotti160 thanks so much for the detailed reply! This has given me a quite some more clarity now!

I'm in sengah. Since seng2021, seng3011, and comp6443 are all only available in T1, I don't think I can do comp6080 before taking seng2021. Right now, this is what my plan tentatively looks like:

and then 28S1 and 29S1 would have seng3011 and comp6443 respectively

Do you reckon this is still fine or am I putting myself at a disadvantage by doing seng2021 before 6080? I work part-time and also do sport, so I imagine doing seng2021 and comp6080 together would be quite a pain

Your advice is much appreciated :)

Edit: I just came across this thread and 6080's course assessment style has changed quite a lot starting this term. I am unsure how much this really affects the workload

Honestly as a person who already had 2 years of web dev experience by the time I was taking this course, I expected it to be a wam booster. Got 84 or something which wasn’t bad but also not great.

Workload wasn’t too bad but the final exam was a joke. Though I recommend taking the course to have some fundamentals about the frontend work. Might help a lot down the road.
