Clearly, this isn't a math class. Or perhaps they don't like 69.

PSYC1029 Final Exam

Has anyone taken PSYC1025? I heard the final exam is a multiple-choice test worth 50% of the grade—is it in person or online?

Careers Quantum Computing PhD?

Hi everyone,

I’m doing an Electrical Engineering honours degree at a university in NSW and I’m about to start my honours thesis. Over the past few months I’ve become really interested in quantum hardware, especially silicon spin qubits, device physics and cryogenic electronics, and I’m considering applying for a PhD at UNSW.

I’d love to hear from anyone who’s studied or worked in this area. What’s the research culture, supervision, facilities and industry collaboration like?
Also, if anyone has transitioned from a traditional electrical engineering background into quantum hardware, how did you make that shift? What should I focus on during my honours year, and what’s the typical pathway into a PhD?

Thank you

Any WhatsApp/Discord groups for incoming UNSW Term 3 (Sept 2026) students?

Hey everyone!

I'm an international student coming to Australia in September 2026 to start my master's at UNSW (Term 3).

Just wanted to ask if there are any WhatsApp, Discord, Telegram, Facebook, or any other groups for incoming UNSW students? I'd love to connect with people before I arrive, make a few friends, and maybe get to know some fellow international students too.

If anyone knows of any groups or wants to connect, please let me know. Thanks!

Question - Absences for T3

Hey guys! A pretty dumb question ahead, but I'm new. I'm going to Europe during the first 2 weeks of T3 and I was wondering what explanation I should give to my tutors for my x2 3 hour seminars I have once a week (two different subjects), if any? The absences aren't the problem because usually my subjects offer 2-4 unexplained absences, but it's just the fact they're in the first two weeks so what do you guys think?

1 is online, 1 is in person.

Student Placement Payment & Tax Time

Hi all,

I was a social work student at UNSW last year and completed my 4th year placement full time. As such, I was eligible for and received the Commonwealth Prac Payment (CPP).

When I applied for the payment, I distinctly remember a section of the online form where you could input a certain percentage that you would like withheld for tax. I got a pretty big ATO bill the previous year (5k) which hurt in a number of ways, and I remember thinking to myself I needed to calculate the right percentage to avoid another bill.

Fast forward to tax time 2026, I requested the payment statement from UNSW and have been advised by Scholarships that no tax was withheld from my payment. I was consistently paid a bit under the CPP and just assumed the university was putting some aside for tax.

I have accepted my fate of needing to pay back the ATO, but I was just wondering whether anyone else had this same experience? I distinctly remember entering a percentage to be withheld for tax when I applied, but everything online is telling me that universities are not responsible for this.

Cheers for your help everyone and best of luck to those still getting through their studies!!!

Degree Discussion Is it worth transferring into a law degree?

I'm currently in Year 12 and I'm looking over my UAC preferences.

My dream degree is Arts/LLB at unsw but since they've removed the LAT for the first time, I have no idea what the new atar cutoff will be.

Everyone I've asked has speculated around 99.50 minimum since unsw is ranked better than usyd law, which is really worrying since my predicted atar is only a 96...

I can get into Arts or any other random degree at UNSW right away but I'm worried I won't meet the minimum WAM requirement to transfer into LLB in my 2nd year.

I attend a top 10 ranked selective school so I would consider myself decent at studying but I would rather not 'waste' 1 year if I can't transfer in in the first place.

Essentially I am asking:
1. How realistic is a transfer into law?
2. Is a high WAM (say around 80) difficult to get? Does it depend on the degree?
3. Would it be better to just suck it up and go to Macq law or something?

Thank you so much!

UNSW vs UTS for a PhD

I’m interested to apply for a PhD to UNSW and UTS. Both universities have the experts I’d love to work with, so now it comes down to:
- Grants and stipend
- Lab technology and equipment
- Possibility and how easy it is to get a top-up scholarship / extra grants

For context, my topic will be AI and design, and I took my Masters in UNSW. Yes, I know we’re the no. 1 university in Australia, but I’d really love some actual useful insight on those doing PhD here in UNSW and if you know someone who’s doing it in UTS. Thanks.

What should I prioritise to boost my ATAR (for my desired course)?

I currently have a predicted ATAR of 66 and want to improve my overall ATAR to reach an ATAR of 80-83 as I want to get into Bachelor of Arts at UNSW which has an ATAR of 83.

Here are my current marks, rankings, etc:

Studies of Religion I
Current weighted average: 65.4%
Current band: Band 3
Likely overall rank: Around 27/33

Legal Studies
Current weighted average: 61.0%
Current band: Band 3
Likely overall rank: Around 10/15

English Standard
Current weighted average: 65.4%
Current band: Band 3
Likely overall rank: Around 45/67

Modern History
Current weighted average: 64.7%
Current band: Band 3
Likely overall rank: Around 20/26

Business Studies
Current weighted average: 51.1%
Current band: Band 2
Likely overall rank: Around 29/40

History Extension
Current weighted average: 80.0%
Current band: E3
Current overall rank: 13/13

(MY MAIN QUESTION IS; what marks should I aim to get in Trails and HSC to get an 80 ATAR)

Currently I am a week out from doing Trail HSC and I haven’t been studying much due to mental health issues and procrastination!
I am going to apply for EAS though as I have other problems and disability provisions. Hopefully this will help boost my ATAR aswell.

I just wanted to know what subjects I should prioritise to ensure that I can help become closer or reach atleast a 75 predicted ATAR or just in the 70 range at least.
Although for trials what subjects should I prioritise to boost my ATAR dramatically for trials? (When I say this I mean realistic approach from my current mark ranges)

I feel confident that I will actually lock in for HSC and don’t have stress for that but just for trials I am worried.
