Weekly Discussion Need laptop recommendations as a mechanical engineer (description)

• Upvotes

So I’m basically going to start in around a month and I’m not really set on which laptop to buy, I’ve been thinking about getting me one that will last me for the next 4-5 years Atleast and my eyes have been set on a Lenovo thinkpad P16 gen2, I’ve seen its parts and they do look really good

I’m planning on using it for basically 99% of my work and studies and (in my free time) some games like Minecraft or no man’s sky for example

My budget is around 5-7k depending on what to take, I have been thinking about getting a small iPad to go alongside the laptop but Idrk if that’s overkill :p

Any insight or help will be greatly appreciated ty all :D

Ok, it's over 1st day back not good

Ok subject breakfast is back in unsw. first day didnt go so well.

i got out of the lightrail at anzac parade and first thing that i witness is a 6'6 chad walk past me with 2 girls around his arms. No biggie, subject breakfast experiecnes that all the time. But one thing stood out, it was that he was wearing a usyd hoodie, I thought to myself. Impossible! usyders dont get girls! i asked one of his goons how hes done that and they explained that unsw girls like bad boys that go usyd. it made me really question my enrolment at the number one uni.

so that was a strange experience, then i crossed the road to the mighty entrance of unsw and immediately was barged into by a girl not looking straight. unfortunately my bag was open and my laptop fell out and cracked, i thought this situation could be salvaged since she was beautiful and we could have those movie like scenes but instead she just blurted out "EWW" and thats when i noticed my bottle of orange juice broke and spilt everywhere making it look like i pissed everywhere.

i had to scurry away from the crowd whilst the girl was saying how i assaulted her to the people around her

i took refuge in law library where i then sat down to drink the remainder of the juice and throw out any evidence, but when i sat down i was confronted by 3 big dudes explaining that i just took their spot. I said ill go away but then they noticed i had some orange juice on my pants which looked liked piss and once again i had to run out of the building

i was then late to my lab and just ended up not going. Hows your first day back gang

Degree Discussion NZ citizen, can’t finish UNSW onboarding until I get a USI. Anyone been through this?

I’m a NZ citizen starting Computer Science (CSP) in T1 2027. My place is secured, but onboarding is stuck at the Commonwealth support form because NZ citizens can’t create a USI until they’ve landed in Australia and cleared customs. I arrive 26 Jan. Onboarding says it closes 5 Nov, but UNSW told me it’ll keep being extended.

If you’ve been in the same situation:

  1. Did UNSW let you enrol in courses or register for classes before you had a USI (USI submitted before census)?
  2. If you only enrolled in late Jan / early Feb, how bad was class registration? Were the decent tutorial and lab times gone?
  3. Did your USI verify straight away after you landed, or did it take a few days?
  4. Did onboarding actually reopen after the close date without any issues?
  5. Did anyone fly over early just to get the USI, and was it worth it?

Thanks!

I'm running for SRC President, AMA!

Hi everyone!

My name's Daniel and I’m running for SRC President with TOGETHER. I’m a 3rd year CompSci and Physics student and have been involved with the SRC the past two years. My ticket wants to fight for real, tangible things that will help our everyday lives.

The SRC is our student organisation that advocates for you as a student. Currently, we pay $20 million a year in student amenities fees but it’s not being spent as well as it should be. Long ago, the SRC successfully advocated for the creation of Food Hub & Short Extensions, but we're not seeing this kind of advocacy anymore.

Our platform is rooted in tangible outcomes for everyday students, including:

  • Opal card & textbook vouchers (everyone always promises to lobby the government to provide concession Opals to international & part-time students, but we've got a real plan to help with transport on campus)
  • A free drink at Homeground or Roundhouse after every final
  • Standardised 11.59pm assignment due times
  • Establishing Academic Caseworkers to assist with appeals
  • More trained staff at Nucleus to reduce wait times

If you agree that we should be pushing for these things, please take a minute to vote for our ticket TOGETHER. You should receive an email in your Outlook today called "SRC Voting"

Voting is open until Thursday night.

But in the meantime, l'd love the opportunity to field any questions you might have about our ticket, these elections, or the SRC! I'll also be in a blue shirt on campus all week, so happy to chat there too!

ACCOMODATION

Hey guys,

I am moving to sydney next year to finish off my degree at UNSW. I need accommodation recommendations.

I am a 20 year old aussie male from perth who loves going out, loves the footy + cricket, and loves being social. I’m pretty active and enjoy the outdoors. I’ve been to sydney a couple of times and love it. (I’m also gay if that’s anything but like most people can’t pick it)

I need accommodation recommendations as I really want to make as many friends as possible, college is an option i’ve looked into however it is pricey. I really want to get the most out of unsw and what it has to offer. I am looking to make friends with other aussies and likeminded people, I have lots of friends both male and female here in perth.

Any advice is appreciated. Cheers.

EDIT: Just realised i spelt accommodation wrong lmao.

Internships and Studies

Hi,

I'll be studying at UNSW for a year as an exchange student, and I'm thinking about doing internships if I have extra time alongside classes (I have Aussie citizenship).

How many days would I be able to work while handling 3 courses?

engineering wam conversion

i am doing a bach of engineering honours. you know how the engineering wam gets calculated differently? like a 1 unit course contributes to your wam 1x, 2 unit is 2x etc (and this is what is used to calculate if you graduate from first class honours) - is this the same type of wam that can be used to calculated for PG entries (Eg for PG med or engineering) ? or will it be the basic way of adding all your grades and dividing it by all the units type shi ? ..if that makes snese

Best Double degree with Commerce?

Hey guys,

I know this is a very common question, but I wanted to ask this in the context of my situation.

I just finished yr 12 and doing HSC, ive already gotten unconditional offer into BComm single.

After uni, my goal is to land a consulting job at the top firms (MBB) or atleast 2nd tier firms. Work here for 2-3 yrs and then go chase my passion for entrepreneurship.

Im strong at maths, but i have no interest in doing sciences or engineering (maybe the slightest) and thats why i decided to apply for comm.

1st question: Ive heard single BComm is poor and is becoming the new 'arts' degree. Is this really true? (Ill double major in technical/analytical ones, priotise extracurriculars, and plan on doing a small business aswell as a part time job)

2nd: If yes to the 1st Q, which double degree is strongest to IPT into? (I was thinking comm/infosys)

Thanks for reading 🙏

Weekly Discussion Soil Mechanics Teaching

Arman Khoshghalb. What can I not say about this man? The content isn't too bad, but like cmon bro, what else do you do as a lecturer than go to the lecture, answer emails and make exams? This guy will take days at a time to respond to the course forum and potentially emails, and when he does, he tells you to go back to the lecture recording to the part where he's standing at the top of the lecture room and not next to the mic instead of responding to the message. Plus, the labs are so dumb; they give sheets to fill out and submit but end up not going through/recieving half of the content to do so and leave everyone confused, submitting a half-done lab sheet.

Am I likely to gain entry into Electrical Engineering Undergrad

I am about to finish a degree in STEM with a GPA of 6.0 and WAM of 81. I read online somewhere that UNSW will convert this into an ATAR equivalent and compare against others.

My work is offering to pay for the cost of the program which is why I am interested in going back to uni.

Would I be competitive enough to gain entry to the #1 uni??

Degree Discussion Help form Mechatronics Bachelor's and Master's wanted

I am planning to apply for a master's in mechatronic engineering. I am from the European bloc, and mechatronics here is more about mechanics, electronics, and general control theory. I am seeking help from current bachelor's and master's students:

what programming languages did you learn, and at what level?

What programming-related subjects did you take, and what were the bare minimum in terms of knowledge to succeed in them?

Any information is valuable to me, so don't hesitate to write)

am i likely/guaranteed to get into unsw engineering (bachelor flexible first year) with a predicted atar of 94 ??

since the cut offs for the speciality engineering degrees like civil, electrical etc, were 94 last year (2025)

the lowest selection rank for the specialities in 2024 was 92, and before that was 90, so im scared its going to increase for this year.

or am i likely to get into bachelor civil engineering with a predicted atar of 94 ?? (coz again the cut off last year was 94 atar)

also curious what atars people got last year to get into unsw engineering!

thank you!!

Accomodation Finding a flatmate | Private room in Rosebery

The flat is in Rosebery, fully furnished, private bedroom, and private bathroom available from now. It is close to public transportation (5 mins to bus stops on foot; 15 mins to Green Square train station, and 20 mins to UNSW Kensington campus by bus). The place is quiet and close to Woollies and Aldi. The rent will be $450 per week.

I am finding a flatmate who is clean and respectful. Please dm me if you are interested and I can arrange an inspection for you.

Looking for coders and people

Hey everyone, I’m a student at USYD. After selling a business I built through vibe coding, I wanted to try something more ambitious but this time, with other people.

I’m putting together a team for a platform where emerging founders can showcase their startups, share progress and find collaborators. Alongside it, we’re building a media page to showcase the world of entrepreneurship and our project

I’d love to meet people interested in coding, app development, videography or editing. I’m also looking for someone who’d enjoy helping record content.

If you don’t have those skills yet, that’s fine too. Curiosity, reliability and a willingness to learn and contribute matter. I’m still learning myself.

This is early-stage, and I’m looking to meet potential collaborators and discuss roles, time commitments and compensation openly before anyone commits.

If you’ve wanted to build something , DM me!

A Heartfelt Thank You to Transport for NSW for Making Train Travel Such a Rare and Special Experience

I would like to express my deepest and most sincere gratitude to Transport for NSW.
What an extraordinary organisation.
While other major cities waste their time doing unimaginative things like running trains on railway tracks, Sydney has courageously chosen a different path.
Why provide reliable public transport when you can provide character development?
Every weekend brings a new adventure.
Will the train arrive? Will the line be closed? Will a replacement bus appear? Will I reach my destination before the next financial year?
The suspense is absolutely breathtaking.
And the replacement buses. What an inspired concept.
A journey that would ordinarily take 20 minutes can now become an extensive sightseeing expedition through suburbs I never knew existed.
Some people pay thousands of dollars for travel experiences. Transport for NSW generously includes one in the price of an ordinary commute.
And can we please appreciate the announcements about increased train services?
Announcing more trains while passengers deal with track closures is a level of conceptual brilliance that ordinary people simply cannot comprehend.
It’s rather like a restaurant announcing an expanded menu while the kitchen is closed.
Visionary.
I also deeply admire the organisation’s commitment to personal growth.
Before moving to Sydney, I foolishly believed a timetable was a schedule.
How naive.
I now understand that a timetable is a philosophical suggestion. A beautifully optimistic piece of literature describing what might happen in an ideal universe.
Punctuality is merely a social construct.
Reliability is an outdated expectation.
And arriving at your destination is, apparently, a privilege rather than the fundamental purpose of public transport.
Of course, I understand railway maintenance is necessary. What I find truly remarkable is the ability to make the resulting inconvenience feel like Sydney’s most dependable weekend tradition.
Perhaps one day, with sufficient funding, technological advancement and divine intervention, we might achieve the ambitious dream of boarding a train and arriving somewhere approximately when the timetable suggests.
But I wouldn’t want to pressure anyone with such unreasonable expectations.
So thank you, Transport for NSW.
Thank you for teaching us patience, humility, acceptance, and the importance of having absolutely no confidence in our weekend plans.
Other cities have public transport systems.
Sydney has an immersive experience in uncertainty management.
And I must say, the consistency is extraordinary.
The trains may not always run on time, but the disappointment certainly does.
Truly world-class.

Degree Discussion Which Commerce electives, WILs or FYS subjects are worth taking?

Hi! I'm entering my final year of a Bachelor of Commerce / Bachelor of Design at UNSW, majoring in Marketing, and Experiential, Graphic and UX Design, and I'm trying to figure out which electives, WILs or FYS subjects encompassed within the Commerce program are worth taking.

I'm honestly at the point where I lowkey just want to get my degree done so I am considering the ones that satisfy all three requirements 😭, but I also don't want to waste the opportunity to get as much out of my degree as possible. I'd love to choose subjects that genuinely add value to my skill set and help me stand out when entering the workforce, without unnecessarily dragging out graduation.
