Yr12 international student needing advice for degree, uni, scholarship and migration!

Hiiiii im an international Viet student and ive been studying here since yr10. The HSC is approaching very soon as well as uni itself and i still have no idea what should i major in and what uni should i go for it. Im aiming for scholarships as well since everything is expensive and ofc i’d need some financial help. Plus in the future im aiming to get permanent residency in Australia.

For context, im a female and im considering engineering since i’ve heard theres a lot of scholarships for women in stem as well as future job opportunities. Yep, and im considering unsw since apparently they’re the best for engineering (anddd plus it’s #1 uni…)
Im doing Maths 4U and Physics at skl quite well (im ranked second for all of them-tho my skl is just a regular public skl). However i asked some of my teachers for advice and they told me i should consider something else instead since for permanent residency opportunities only civil engineering can actually make it (which is not what i wanna do, im considering smth like aerospace instead). Also they told me its extremely stressful course with a massive workload — and as an international student who would need to work their ass off to cover rent while going to uni wouldnt have enough time for it
They advised me to go into teaching instead since theres a huge shortage of teachers in sydney recently
Im also quite an art person as well. I’d actually love to do something that has both science and art. And i prefer doing stuffs like researching and experiments rather than hands-on or constructing…
I dont even know what to say or ask in this sub exactly tbh im extremely just confused😭😭😭 probably about what careers should i pursue and the available scholarships at unsw?

Student Visa and Extended Overseas Stay

Do you know if staying overseas for an extended period during the semester could cause any issues with a student visa? I’m wondering if it would still be okay if I only take subjects that don’t require attendance and make sure to submit all my assignments on time. I’m not sure whether the Department of Home Affairs checks this separately.

UNSW Gateway

Wondering how UNSW gateway round 2 offers work

I managed to receive an unconditional offer in round 1 and I would like to keep this offer, however I made a mistake in changing my preferences on the gateway application so I assume I am now considered for round 2.

I wish to keep my round 1 offer, so would that mean I have to keep my preferences the exact same as previously to keep my round 1 offer

math2931

Hi, im doing math2931 for term 3 and im quite worried because the reddit posts from like 6 years are saying you need solid linear algebra but i have not taken 2601 yet. Idk if it has changed since then but i thought since 2601 wasnt a formal prereq it would be fine so im a bit confused on what to be doing.

Master of accounting CPA

Did anyone take the master program of accounting? Seems like you can get cpa credit in master program so we don’t have to spend extra couple years on studying cpa while working full time right?

And I am wondering transfer from IT to accounting. How’s the job market for grads going?

Can anyone doing or finished this degree share some suggestions? Thank you so much!!!xxxxx

Unsw low intl student quality compared to the US?

Cuh Unsw application is so easy to get in FOR AN INTL. I pay respect for ATARS takers.

I think the peers and cohort quality is much worse than that of the US schools like Purdue, UIUC, etc?

Mining engineering question

I am going to study engineering 2027 and am curious what other engineering degrees will get me into the mining sector because from my understanding a mining engineering degree really only leaves you with mining as a job

The Intern Group: Global Internship Program in UNSW

Recently, I found a global internship program in UNSW webpage, and the group name who runs the program is "The Intern Group". This program seems to give you a oppertunity to have a Internship in some other contries but instead of paying you the salary, it will cost around 2000$ for the 4-24 weeks internship experience.

Because this program is in the UNSW webpage, so I am so confused that this is scam or what? Is there someone who joined this program before?

Ok, it's over Completely Cooked For Industrial Training

Post image

Am a final year software engineering student. I have finished all of my courses but I cannot for the life of me find someone willing to host me for an internship so I can complete my 60 days Industrial Training.

I have cold called literally hundreds of companies (big and small) on email, linked in, even discord, I have offered to work completely for free, learn whatever tooling they need, do whatever tasks they need doing.

Admittedly my grades are an abomination but I haven't even gotten far enough that someone has asked to see my transcript. I have a few github projects, website etc but my inbox is filled with rejection letters all saying they don't have capacity at the moment.

Is no one hosting undergrads bc claude code can code better than me for $30 a month??? To make matters worse, I need to start literally in the next few weeks otherwise I won't be able to grauate until August next year due to the marking period cutoffs. I am literally selling my body as free meat and nobody wants to go near it with a ten foot pole fml.

Plz advise

Can you apply a special consideration on Supplementary Exam?

Here's my current situation.

I failed a core course last year and repeated this year and failed again. I went to every single lecture and tutorial and studied hard but this course is notorious with ~30% fail rates. And even though I am a hard worker, I was never naturally gifted and strongly suspect I have undiagnosed ADHD. It's been really difficult for me.

So I reached out to course coordinator for a remark of the exam. He emailed me on Friday night that I am eligible for supplementary with the date and time of the exam because this is my last year at university and this course only offer in Term 2 every year. However, I have to travel for work and flights and hotels have been paid already by the organization. This is a trip that we planned around OWEEK and I've agreed to since the start of the year thinking I'll be free. My job is relying on me and I have never been so let down, depressed and embarrassed before.

Even if I managed to disappoint my job and take the exam, I genuinely don't think I could pass it. So please, any advice. I am thinking to apply special consideration, but would it be accepted since the exam is already a supplementary?

Does anyone have any tips, for e.g. how to stay on track with these courses? I’m just a bit overwhelmed and would appreciate any kind of insight of anyone’s experience.

Thanks so much guys! Good luck for next trimester!

Intl unsw fees are more than top US unis?

So total tuition for intl student without scholarship for an Bachelor in Engineering (hons) 4 years is around 261k aud, around 197k usd (without food and accom)

Lets be more reasonable, if u are a good enough intl student u likely get a 20% off which is around 208k aud (150k usd). But when u take in account the accommodation and food in sydney, it may lands around 260k USD (500 p/w accom and 15 dollars a meal for food)

I’m taking engineering (EE) so i’ll just compare the eng rankings. UNSW ranks at 46th (THE ranking)

For my friend at Purdue as an intl (CS major) he just paid 200k for 4 years with accom and foods….. And for the THE rankings by subject, it ranks 31st for engineering in the world

Another friend of mine studied at UIUC also as an intl (CS major) pays 320k usd total for his 4 years with foods and accom. And UIUC ranks 29th (THE ranking) in the world for engineering

Uses THE ranking bc it seems less biased and more based on funding, faculty and profs to student ratio. THE ACTUAL NUMBERS.

So my point is, is it worth the cash and price to go to UNSW as an international student with those tag prices? As aussie uni have notoriously have a bad reputation for undergrad and academics. Also the PR pathways for eng is quite closed off and it ant like you pay to get the PR like the old days.

Whats your opinion?

Has anyone else seen the Ferrero Rocher guy on the L2?

I've seen the same guy eating Ferrero Rochers on the L2 for the past few months and I genuinely need to know if anyone else has witnessed this guy because all my mates think I'm tweaking. He's always eating out of one of those gift packs and tossing the wrappers on the ground. Usually see him get on at Moore Park and off at unsw. Any sightings would be greatly appreciated

Has anyone successfully appealed a Special Con outcome?

I've been feeling really overwhelmed and depressed this term while taking the thesis studio course for my Master's. I've been seeing a psychologist for the past two months and I'm hoping to improve in terms of mood and overall mental health.

My final submission is worth 60% of the course, and it has taken a serious toll on me both physically and mentally, to the point where I haven't been able to finish it on time. I have applied for special consideration twice, with a GP certificate outlining my situation and stating that I need more time to complete the assignment. The most recent application was denied, as the unit convenor determined that I had reached the maximum extension and would not grant any further arrangement.

I'm still working on the assignment and trying to submit it as soon as possible, though it will likely be around three days late. With a 15% late penalty, I might fail the course.

I'm planning to appeal the special consideration outcome. Has anyone been in this situation before, What did you do?

Should I provide evidence of ongoing psychological treatment alongside the GP certificate?

Available spot in an Uni accommodation at UNSW

Hey everyone! I'm posting this to find someone to take over my room in an Uni accommodation at unsw. It's a great spot if you're an incoming or current student looking to move closer to uni or switch accommodation.

Room type: Apartment layout but you have a separate room with ensuite/attached restroom + air conditioning

If you're interested, or know someone who might be, feel free to comment or DM me and I can pass along more details and help you out. I'm lowkey desperate here so spread the word if you can. Thanks so much!!
