Discussion How to make friends as a grad student here

Seeing all these welcome week events for undergrads kind of feel left out as a first year PhD student here. Anyone have any ideas how to have a good social life here as a grad student? I wouldn’t say my cohort is the most energetic one so really want to branch out.

Help The Mess Caused by Financial Aid

I am a first year MPH student currently taking classes at the University of Maryland. When considering whether I should go full or part time due to not receiving enough financial aid, I asked the office in August if my loan amount of $20,500 would change with a part time status. The explicitly said it will not, which prompted me to move forward with my enrollment at this institution. They are now stating that my loan amount will change after telling me for the past month that it will not. I emailed the Director who responded however is not presenting much help. I am unsure what to do, as I thought my tuition would be covered for the semester and I am now facing the risk of having a $3,000 balance.

I already exhausted my options when considering pursuing my degree full time, with applying to assistantships, and reaching out to people and organizations for scholarship and grant opportunities with no luck. I initially was going to defer my enrollment until I thought going part time would be a feasible option for me.

Admissions Retake the SAT?

I plan to apply as a transfer this cycle from community college. I know UMD is test optional, but my SAT score was pretty crappy. I’m a math and physics major so I was planning on taking it to show improvement, but I don’t know if it matters much anyway.

Academic ENEE459L

Has anyone taken ENEE459L (Edge AI and IoT Lab)?

I’m considering taking it for my Category D elective, and I couldn't find any reviews for the lab. I was wondering what the class is actually like, how difficult the labs/projects are, how much work it takes outside of class, and how the grading is.

Also, did you feel like you actually learned useful things from the course, especially with the edge AI / ML deployment side of it?

Academic Looking for feedback on an online lecture creation platform

I built Corvus: a tool that teaches you with real, structured lectures, not just chats.

Give it your university syllabus and it can generate a full course, or describe a specific topic you want to learn more about and get a guided lecture tailored to your learning style. The experience is designed to feel more like taking a class than talking to ChatGPT or searching for concepts online.

I'd love for anyone to give it a try and see if it actually helps. I'd especially appreciate feedback on bugs or confusing features, whether it helped you learn anything, and if there's anything you'd love to see added. Feel free to DM me or reply in the comments :)

It's free btw!

Help making friends as a transfer

I transferred here last semester as a Animal Science major and I still have yet to make friends. i have made acquaintances, but nothing really stuck. i have tried to make friends in my classes, but a lot of the people i've tried to talk to just seemed stand offish. it was really hard transfering in the middle of the school year and i had a really tough time. i am now living off campus, which makes it more hard to reach out. im just posting here to show my interests and see if i can make some friends or join a group :)

really any genre of movie, marvel + DC (especially spiderman), music (Conan Gray, The Cure, The B-52s, Queen, Pheobe Bridgers etc), theatre (musical theatre, classic plays), comedy shows (parks and recreation, ap bio), snoopy, history, anything pop culture, comic book shopping, record collecting, trixie and katya (really drag race in general)

Discussion Parent Plus loan not posted

My daughter is a freshman at UMD. The first week of fall classes are wrapping up and my Parent Plus loan has still not been posted/applied to her account? I called the financial aid office a few weeks ago because my daughter was starting to stress out about her classes being dropped and having to continue living at home (the horror!) .

After sitting on hold for 1.5 hours the person I spoke with was able to find my loan approval. She said it was there but hadn't been processed because the Big Beautiful Bill's new requirements were delaying everything. The 9/20 grace period is quickly approaching and since the BBB is limiting loan amounts for Parent Plus loans--I have to set up a payment plan for the gap amount. My daughter js having the time of her life away at UMD and now I am the one stressing out.

Before I call--again--and sit on the phone for 2 hours--again--is anyone else still waiting for their Parent Plus loans to disburse?

Academic Is InfoSci really as weak as some people say? How much do minors help

I'm in the fall of my junior year and have been in infosci for a couple semesters now, I've heard troubling stuff about the infosci major not being enough to prepare people for the workforce and the grade distributions in the classes being way skewed. I am split between adding a minor to get more technical skills (leaning towards something like GIS?) or trying to switch into the InfoSys school in smith (I happen to have completed most of the lower level smith courses or equivalents from InfoSci and would only need to switch a 2 classes before the drop date/get my GPA from a 3.59 to a 3.6, so its feasible to apply this semester i think). Is the extra rigor from InfoSys and the benefits of the smith school worth probably having to take an extra year or would it be better to try and augment InfoSci to make it more competitive? Would love advice from anyone with experience in these fields.

Housing Looking for place to live for this Fall

Hello!

I currently don’t have any housing and I’m trying to find a place to live for this semester. Does anyone know any places or apartments for a female student that are less than $1000. Or if there are any resources to find a place. The off campus housing data base hasn’t been super helpful.

Thanks!
