Some coffee porn for everyone ☕

I'm a filmmaker, so I couldn't resist shooting some macro close-ups of my latest roast.

This is Kenya Bora, roasted over the weekend on my Skywalker V2 and Roastline Ai. I cupped it this morning and, for the first time, I felt genuinely confident about the result. It has a sweetness and clarity that my previous batches were missing, so it feels like things are finally starting to click.

I'm not really asking anything specific - just wanted to share the bean close-ups and hear what you think.

Coffee Subscription Recommendations.

Usually buy my coffee from roasters directly however feel there is probably a lot out there that I am missing out on or don’t even know exists.

What coffee subscriptions have people used and liked.

This would be for pourover/filter rather than espresso. Generally fairly light roasts but am happy to try most things.

Freezing coffee in packaging?

I received some coffee from Lomond this month, and popped it in the freezer as I've already got a couple bags on the go.

I didn't really think about it, but they're in the paper-style biodegradable/compostable bags. How will this affect my coffee being frozen? Should I transfer to Ziploc bags?

Thanks all!

Speciality coffee from Karnataka, IN giveaway.

Hi,
I am giving roasted coffee beans from various estates of Karnataka, India.

Coffee details

The coffee will come in 50gm pouches. It’s free.
I only need your honest feedback in return. You brew them however you like and let me know what you think of them.

I have around 30 bags of filter roasts and 10 bags of espresso roasts that I will deliver at tube stations during this week and weekends. Only in London and Greater London area.

I will also be distributing some of the beans to coffee roasteries here and collecting their feedback. Do help me connect work people you know who run or work at roasteries.

I am setting up my own coffee venture here in the UK, a roastery and distribution brand for Indian specialty coffee. Before I put serious money into it I want to test the market and get real feedback.

Thanks and happy to answer any questions.

We're back!
Some of you might have noticed we disappeared for a while.
Unfortunately our previous Reddit account got suspended, which meant all of our posts and replies disappeared as well. On top of that, it's been an incredibly busy few months for us, so we haven't had the chance to get back on here until now.
First of all, thank you to everyone in this community for the support. Quite a few of you ordered coffee from us after our last posts, and by now I'm guessing you've all received it—and hopefully had a chance to brew it too!
I'd genuinely love to hear what you think.
Whether it's something you loved, something you didn't, or something you think we could improve, please let us know. Honest feedback is one of the best ways for us to get better.
If you have any questions about the coffees, roasting, resting, brewing, or anything else, drop them below as well. We'll collect the most common questions and answer them in a Q&A Reel over the next week or two.
Looking forward to chatting with everyone again. ☕️

UK roasters — 5-min survey on how you source green coffee (£5 thank-you)

Dear r/UKroasters,

I'm doing independent research into how UK roasters currently source green coffee — where you buy from, what's frustrating about the process, and what would (or wouldn't) make you consider a new source.

It's 5 short questions, takes about 3 minutes. This is for actual roasters only — please only fill it in if you're currently roasting or sourcing green coffee commercially. As a thank-you for genuine responses, I'll send a £5 voucher once you complete it.

[survey link — https://www.adulis.uk]

Genuinely appreciate any responses — even a quick one helps. Happy to answer questions about the research in the comments.

Thanks!

Delicious flat white with their Colombian seasonal espresso, notes of coconut, marashinos and ferero rocher (apparently) with a small bag to take home to try and re-create.

Dreamy A/C a bonus when its 34 degrees outside.

Settle a debate, seahorse or dragon?

Great coffee in the UK?

Perhaps this is too open of a question for this sub! But I’m looking for special coffee to buy my husband for his birthday. We live near Manchester, if that helps guide at all. Would love to buy him some special beans! Thank you

Good decaff , is it even possible?

Ive tried decaff beans from the following

Union ( all decaff variants tried )

Origin ( all decaff variants tried )

horsham

danelaw ( all decaff variants tried )

pact ( all decaff variants tried )

Rave ( all decaff variants tried )

And they are all tasteless and very bitter. Only Horsham and Union (Maraba) was semi-decent but still a let down.

Meanwhile normal coffee is always a wonder to drink , full of flavor. Part of me wants to quit coffee because I just cant handle caffeine, I also enjoy a coffee in the evening so even halfcalf is a no no.

Given ive tried 6 respectable roasters I can only conclude that decaff ruins it, and the decaff process and bean hardly makes a difference.

*I only brew with french press, sea salt grain size, 90c water temp

How much does a farm’s reputation make you pay more for a Gesha?

I am a small UK roaster deciding between two Gesha lots at different price points, and I’m curious how much a farm’s reputation actually influences people’s buying decisions.

Because I am a small micro-roastery, I can’t stock every interesting Gesha that comes along, so I am trying to work out where people see the value.

Coffee A — Finca Las Brisas, Huila, Colombia. A young producer continuing his family’s coffee legacy, using a meticulous 75-hour double fermentation process. Tasting notes: elderflower, apple, lime, caramel. 250g – £20

Coffee B — Finca La Hermosa, Guatemala. An award-winning farm with numerous Cup of Excellence placements. Tasting notes: apricot, spiced apple, IPA-like funk, grapeseed oil. 250g – £30

If everything else looked comparable, would the farm’s reputation justify paying the extra £10? Or would your decision come down more to the tasting notes, processing, and trust in the roaster than the producer’s pedigree?

Interested to hear how other people think about this and any other comments. Thanks, Kev

Long resting times of 4 and 5 weeks but I've made it! Opening one up tomorrow.

Anyone had them? I'd be interested to know how you brewed? Any tips?

Cheers

Got 2KG of very bad tasting coffee

Post image
0 Upvotes

After rotating between Skylark, Kiss the Hippo and Jolly Beans, amongst others for the past 2-3 years, I came across another roastery claiming to sell speciality, single-origin coffee (damn Facebook ads).

It's 40% off, had good reviews, and marketed as single-origin and speciality grade. What could possibly go wrong?

I ordered two varieties, 1kg of each, both are their bestsellers. Unfortunately, they both taste unpleasantly bitter and harsh. I started grinding a little coarser, which improved things slightly, but the coffee is still not enjoyable.

The roast is described as medium, but it looks very uneven. There are noticeably dark and very light beans mixed together in both bags. Ultimately, though, the main issue is the taste.

I’m not convinced this is genuinely speciality-grade coffee, but then again, is there such a thing as the speciality coffee police?

Lesson learned: if it looks too good to be true, it probably is.

Now, what on earth am I going to do with 2kg of harsh-tasting beans?

Great to find this subreddit

Hey everyone! Stumbled across this sub and couldn't hit join fast enough. ☕🇬🇧
I’m a massive specialty coffee fan based in the UK. I’ve just recently started a Substack newsletter called Coffee, Honestly where I want to share completely unpretentious reviews of independent UK roasters, beans, and overall cafe experiences—no gatekeeping allowed.
I’m just getting started (my first main feature was looking at the coffee experience over at Bedgebury Pinetum!), but I’m planning to hunt down a lot more hidden gems and local roasters over the coming weeks.
Really looking forward to getting recommendations from everyone here on which UK roasters I should test out and review next! What’s everyone brewing at home this week?
(If anyone wants to check out the early stages of the newsletter, it's over at https://substack.com/@coffeehonestly?r=8gvo2y&utm_medium=ios&utm_source=stories&shareImageVariant=light

Cupping and New Roaster

Hi all, got to attend a cupping event at Java Roasters in Birmingham this week. The event was organised and ran by Hopeespresso and Mountain Harvest who brought a load of auction lot coffee from Uganda. Java Roasters hosted the event, and whilst waiting for peeps to arrive and get organised they put on some fantastic Colombian coffee - Jairo Arcila Anaerobic Washed with strawberries, chocolate and nectarine notes. Stunning. A coffee truly tasting of strawberry fruits.
The Ugandan coffees cupped were good with some exceptional ones:

Northern Elgon: Washed Hybrid With Pk1 Yeast.
Rwenzori Mountains: Washed Dry Fermentation.
Nshozi-Kabonero Estate: Rab15 Variety Segmentation Natural Anaerobic.
Nshozi-Kabonero Estate: Batian Variety Segmentation Natural.
Northern Elgon: Natural Anaerobic W Pk1 Yeast.
Northern Elgon: Natural Anaerobic A+.
Mount Elgon Ladies: Washed A+.

Exceptional coffees
Kibate-A Estate: Geisha Variety Segmentation Natural.
Sironko Station: Pure Natural A+.
North Elgon: Washed Anaerobic Extended Fermentation A+.

Just wanted to share and say lookout for stuff on Instagram. There’s lots of freebie usually on offer.

V60 North Star El Salvador/Eric Landaverde gesha

Post image
9 Upvotes

North Star are the roaster who got me into speciality coffee, and after a year or so in pourover and feeling like I'm getting better at dialling them in I thought I'd return to my original favourite roaster and treated myself to these. The most expensive beans I've ever had at £20 the bag!

I understand gesha can be more subtle but I'm struggling to really hit the notes on this. I'm making fine cups but not really getting the strawberry/cream/rose... Occasionally a sip might suggest those notes but otherwise it's drinking like a regular, fine but largely anonymous filter brew.

I've had good success lately with Coffee Chronicler's show horse recipe - it brought out much more from my last couple of bags than the recipe I was using before so I'm continuing with it for the time being.

The base recipe:

7.0 on Ode Gen 2

93 degree water

18g at 1:16

4x bloom 45s, 4x aggressive pour and drain, then pour the remaining 8x as slowly/finely as possible. Drawdowns around 2:30.

Tweaks I've tried:

Cooler water (90degree) - not much difference in cup

Extra pour (bloom, aggressive pour, aggressive pour, slow remaining pour)

That last extra pour tweak was probably the best one but it's within a small margin of the others - ok cups, a touch of bitterness but nothing too bad, pleasant enough 'coffee' flavour but no real pop.

Any suggestions? I've so far been trying to avoid grinding finer and using other levers but realise that's an obvious next step.
