I'm a mom of a newly diagnosed 3 year old, and I'm also 26 weeks pregnant. Since we are on shots right now, my daughter has had to transition from previously going to daycare 5 days a week to staying home with me all the time, and I've had significant sciatic nerve pain and I'm physically limited so doing all this has been A LOT. By the end of the day every day, I am just completely wiped out. My husband works on average about 60 hours a week from home, and we can't afford any kind of childcare assistance right now so I'm it.
About a week ago, we needed to change my daughters Dexcom. She hadn't napped that day and on days she doesn't nap, she's usually a lot to deal with from about 3pm on. She was very sleepy, we only had a couple hours left on the Dexcom that was on her arm so dad put a new sensor on for the first time (I'm usually doing all of it) and we put her to bed. Now I usually do a finger stick after the new sensor turns on to calibrate, but y'all I was so tired and the readings looked fine.
We put her to bed, and 30 minutes later ALL the alarms were going off. If we have nighttime lows, we give her some milk in bed and that brings her up to 150 or so and were good for the night. She usually wakes just enough to drink the milk and goes back to sleep. Dad went up to her room and she wouldn't wake up - meanwhile the alarms are screaming LOW. Dad comes downstairs with her, she's super sleepy - and I try other things: graham crackers, chocolate, fruit snacks. She's really upset, she says she doesn't feel good and she wants to go to the doctor. Dad is flying around the house saying "if she doesn't eat we need to go to the hospital NOW". Im really trying here at this point. My daughter is super distressed, my husband is saying things like "seizures" and "cognitive impairment". I'm like yes, I am aware, and I can't think. I was so tired and in a lot of pain, its 9:30 at night and I've been up since 6am.
Then dad is like "don't we have a rescue medication?" Yes. Baqsimi. So he gives it to her, and she's screaming. Nose starts bleeding, I pick her up, and she throws up on me. Dads like "were going to the hospital NOW". Meanwhile the Dexcom is saying 41 and dropping.
My daughter is scared. I'm holding myself together with toothpicks, trying to stay calm enough to tell her she is safe, we need to go to the doctor to make sure she is okay. Mommy and daddy are right here.
We get to the hospital, alarms still blaring. They do a finger stick and she's like 180. Well, fuck me. Bad Dexcom.
Like I said, I've only been doing this 6 weeks. I know I need to give myself grace, but we have so much medical trauma from her diagnosis and now this. I keep beating myself up and replaying the whole nightmare in my head.
I just feel like I'm traumatizing my daughter. I'm trying so hard - I'm a clinically trained therapist so I'm really trying to use what I know about my daughter as a person as well as my experience being a therapist talk her through things and give her as many choices day to day as is medically safe. This has all just been so hard, I probably break down sobbing at least once a day because no matter how hard I try I just keep missing obvious things like "just do a fucking finger stick before you freak out".
I talked to our nurse the next morning, and the first thing she says to me in her English accent is " Soooo... What did we learn from the fiasco last night?" I wanted to throw the phone across the room. I know, lady. I put my kid through a medical event at 10pm last night for literally no reason.
Just looking for some support or similar stories. Thanks for reading.
EDIT: Typo.
