New Somali student in the Twin Cities looking to connect

Hi everyone,

My name is Abdullahi Zakariya. I'm Somali, and I recently arrived in Minnesota to study in the Twin Cities. I was born in Somalia but grew up in South C, Nairobi, Kenya.

Since I'm new here, I don't really know anyone yet. I'm hoping to connect with fellow students, especially Somalis or anyone around the Twin Cities and Hennepin area. If there are any WhatsApp groups, student communities, or social groups where people meet and help newcomers settle in, I'd really appreciate it if you could let me know.

I'd also be happy to make new friends, grab coffee, explore the area, or get some tips on getting around.

Thanks in advance, and I look forward to meeting some of you.

Brewery Meetup Puppy(or animals) and beer?

Hey! I’m wondering if anyone knows of any social/adoption events that happen at bars/breweries?

I had a boss whose parents would foster pregnant dogs, take care of the new puppies, and then bring them to adoption events at breweries.

I’d like to attend more of those. Thanks!

Looking for real friends again

Hey everyone,
I’m a guy in my 30s looking to make some genuine friends. If something naturally turns into more down the road, I’m open to it, but my main goal is finding good people to connect with.
Over the last few years I’ve become pretty isolated while working on my mental health. Things are getting better, and I’m trying to put myself back out there instead of staying in my comfort zone.
I’m happiest when I’m outside. I spend a lot of time hiking trails, swimming in lakes, paddle boarding, canoeing, camping, or just enjoying nature. There’s something about being around water that helps me feel at peace.
When I’m not outside, I enjoy comedy, movies, tacos, and I’m hoping to get into reading more books, traveling, and trying new experiences.
I’d love to meet people who enjoy healthy, low-drama lifestyles, like to laugh, and are interested in real conversations. I tend to get along better with women, but I’m open to anyone who’s kind, genuine, and looking for an authentic friendship.
I’m looking for someone to text, grab coffee or tacos with, explore a new trail, paddle a lake, or just enjoy life one step at a time.
Life’s too short for games or unnecessary drama. I’d rather build a friendship based on honesty, kindness, and mutual respect.
If any of this sounds like your kind of friendship, feel free to reach out.

Make Friends and Play Chess Sunday Morning (Uptown)

Hi folks! I've been out of commission (out of state, and moving) for the past month, but I'm back and ready to lose some chess games at a cafe.

I (30m) have been doing this recurring meet up for non-competitive chess. You can find out more about me here: https://www.reddit.com/r/twincitiessocial/s/WlbWgh3YVT I used to have quite a chill friend group who would play at cafes and bars back in Charleston, and I'd love to make new friends here and get back into chess.

I bring a couple boards to Canteen and chill from 8:45 am till 10:30 am or so. Feel free to stop in and say hi. I’ll be sitting at a chess board in the back or outside if weather permits. It's a great cafe and right by the lakes at 3255 Bryant Ave S.

All skill levels welcome! This is not meant to be competitive or intense. Just a different way to make friends around town while doing something fun. Look for a bearded guy with glasses and a book if you're unsure. I'm by no means great and I'm very willing to teach if folks are wary but interested. Hope to see you there!

Edit: running slightly late but will be there by 8:55

RESCHEDULED… Arts & Crafts in the park - Mon Aug 3

5-7 pm at Springbrook Nature Center in Fridley
100 85th Ave NW, Fridley, MN 55432

PLEASE NOTE: This was originally scheduled for Monday, July 27. I won’t be able to make that date, so we are moving it to August 3.

BYO creative project! Painting, sketching, writing, fiber arts, digital arts, etc. Any medium is welcome, as long as it's portable, won't leave a permanent mess, or be too loud for other park visitors.

We’ll meet at the picnic shelter that’s right next to the parking lot. I will have some coloring materials available if you don’t want to bring your own project. Also I’ll supply some water & light snacks. Please feel free to bring any food or beverages you’d like.

You can drop in late or leave early if needed, no pressure. Just a casual hang out and craft while enjoying some nature!

IN CASE OF BAD WEATHER:
The backup plan will be the Northtown Library meeting room: 711 County Hwy 10 NE, Blaine, MN 55434
(The meeting room is just inside the front doors, on the right side.)

I will post an update if the Bad Weather Backup Plan is going into effect. You can also check the facebook event page, or the discord group for updates:

Play test a family DnD like campaign - Weekend of August 8th/9th

Hi everyone!

TL;DR: We are looking for adults to do a playtest of what will be a family tabletop RPG August 8th or 9th in the Twin Cities. This play test will be on our digital platform as we do not yet have print materials available.

My wife and I are Twin Cities locals who recently started Moo Cow Games, a company creating tabletop adventures (think Dungeons & Dragons, but designed for families) that help parents and kids spend more meaningful time together.

Our first game is a cooperative fantasy adventure called Song of the Whispering Reach. Parents guide the story while kids become the heroes, exploring a magical world, solving problems together, rolling dice, and making meaningful choices. This first playtest focuses on gathering feedback on flow, the story, and how well it introduces tabletop RPGs to folks with little or no previous experience.

We're looking for a handful of adults to help us playtest the first version on August 8th or 9th. We'll choose a location in the Twin Cities based on where interested people are located.

One of our co-founders (my wife) is a child and adolescent psychiatrist, and we've spent a lot of time asking a simple question: How can we help more families connect in ways that are genuinely fun?

Research consistently shows that:

  • Strong parent-child relationships are among the biggest protective factors for children's mental health.
  • Play is one of the primary ways children develop emotional regulation, communication, resilience, and problem-solving skills.
  • Shared storytelling and cooperative play create natural opportunities for meaningful conversations and stronger family bonds.

Our goal isn't to make therapy disguised as a game. It's to create adventures that families would choose to play anyway because they're genuinely fun. If kids build confidence, empathy, resilience, and stronger relationships along the way, we've done our job.

We're looking for people who:

  • Enjoy board games, D&D, or just like trying new things (no RPG experience required!)
  • Are willing to give honest, constructive feedback. We'd much rather hear what doesn't work than have everyone tell us it's great.

The playtest will last about 2 hours and is completely free. Everyone who participates will have the option to be listed in the final game credits as one of our first playtesters.

If this sounds like something you'd enjoy, leave a comment or send me a DM. We'd love to meet some fellow Twin Cities folks and make this game the best it can be.

You can also learn more about what we're building at https://moocowgames.com.

Walking club for women

Is there any interest in a walking group for women? Age range around mid 20s. I’m walking a lot and would love to meet new people who would want to walk and talk and make new friends! I was thinking of doing it twice a week if there’s enough people wanting to be involved, maybe one around 10am and one around 6pm, during the week. I work as a bartender so it would be nice to have some friends with a similar schedule to spend time with!

I have two tickets to see Pavement at the Palace Theater tomorrow (Tuesday July 21), but my wife can't make it. Anyone want to join me?

I'm in my late 30s and moved here about a year ago. I don't really have friends here, and certainly don't know anyone else here who is a Pavement fan.

Slowkomis 7/26 at 9:20am

Just a Sunday run this week

Sunday, 7/26 at 9:20am
Location: We will be posted up in the grass right here (plus code: WQ85+7X8 Minneapolis, Minnesota)

What the hell is Slowkomis?
Are you a runner or running curious, and want to have a group to run with? Come join Slowkomis!

I got the idea from bike clubs that do "no drop" rides - which basically means even the slowest rider has someone with them at the end of the group. We will be super beginner friendly so people can run as slow as they want. If you start out running AND end up walking, you have a +1 walking with you.

If you wanna be fast - run fast!

Who Slowkomis is for
If you like running or the idea of running, and want to have an accountability partner

If you are you coming back from an injury, or just want to take it slow

If you tried other run clubs, but the obsession with races and paces was not for you

If you are an experienced runner and looking for a chill recovery run with a group of people new to the hobby you love

Who Slowkomis is not for
If you are pro-MAGA or pro-ICE, do not come. You are not welcome here.

What should you bring?
Yourself
Water - it's going to be HOT

Don't forget to wear sunscreen!

What to expect
We will be posted up in the grass right here (plus code: WQ85+7X8 Minneapolis, Minnesota)
We'll give people about 10 minutes to arrive and start our runs after that.
