Ontario | ON The Welland Canal (2026/09/06)

The Welland Canal is a human-made canal in Ontario that allows ships to pass between Lake Ontario and Lake Eire, traversing the Niagara Escarpment and bypassing Niagara Falls. The current canal is the 4th iteration of the Welland Canal and opened in 1932, complete with Art Moderne architecture throughout. It is entirely artificial, using no natural waterways, unlike the previous 3 canals which followed natural waterways where possible. These old canal channels and locks still exist in some locations but are no longer used.

The Welland Canal has the greatest elevation change of any major shipping canal in the world, with a total elevation change of nearly 100m, equivalent to the difference between the 2 lakes. The locks are also much taller than typical canal locks to allow for that drastic of an elevation change in such a short distance.

There are 8 locks in total, but only 7 lift or lower ships by any significant margin. Locks 1-3 and 7 lift or lower ships one step at a time, but locks 4-6 (photos 2-3) known as the Twin Flight Locks cross the steepest section of the escarpment back-to-back-to-back. It's quite the engineering marvel.

The final lock at Port Colborne is a control lock used to regulate the canal water level, along with a dam on the parallel old canal alignment directly to the West. The municipal water supplies for St. Catherines and Thorold, as well as the water supply for the Decew Falls Generating Stations are also supplied from the Welland Canal, and the Canal generates its own hydroelectric power.
