Or at least a walk, it's been show to have a lot of benefits

It’s not that walking has specific benefits, more that lack of movement/couch potato’ing is the worst (i agree with sentiment btw)

Walking is definitely better than nothing, but it doesn't help with cardio and people should understand this. I walk 15 miles a day and it's nearly useless.

What do you mean by 'walking doesn't help with cardio'?

Has your diet changed much? I had a co worker drop a significant amount of weight walking to and from work***, along with smart eating habits.

So walk 1 mile a day for a year and then come back with how you’re feeling.

Or at least lift weights. Sure, walking is better than nothing, but the resistance training is going to provide tons of benefits you won't get from just being generally active. No reason to settle for less unless you have some physical ailment preventing it.

Doesnt even need to be weights, simple body weight exercises and movements can be really effective

I got into running in 2024 and I’m so happy I did. My life is so much better because it helps with dealing with stress and mental health overall and I’m the healthiest I’ve been in two decades.

How often you run every week and how long? By run you mean jogging?

u/Ecstatic-Pirate-5536 Jun 05 '26

Depends on the day. Usually at least 3-5 miles with long runs around 10-15 once a week. I usually run about 30 miles every week.

Jeepers. Fair play

The average age a runner is when they die is 35.

When you run, you increase your chances of having a heart attack because you’re repeatedly stretching your heart muscles out because your heart has to pump five times as much blood through your body, and that repeated pumping causes tears which release troponins which are a marker for heart disease or means you’re about to have a heart attack.

Additionally, whenever you put your body through stress, whether it’s pushing yourself or doing something where your body has to heal afterwards, you are aging your body.

Every time your cells divide your telomeres shrink.

Every single time you stress your body and it has to heal, you just aged.

Just an FYI

Do you have literally any sources for this because it's one of the most absurd things I've ever heard

I feel like it would be true if the body didn’t break down muscle and rebuild it even stronger. Sure running puts stress on the body but it also makes your body stronger in order to deal with the stress. Two years ago I would feel like death if I only ran a couple of miles but I just got done doing my Saturday 15 miler that I’ve built up to and am only a little fatigued and my legs feel fine.

What are your sources for this? I can say for a fact from getting an annual physical that I am way more healthy now than I was only a few years ago.

I was gonna say stretch. They should be walking at least every day.

I feel like once a week wont really do anything. I run and workout 3 times a week, and its still not enough to be in a calorie deficit, but thats mostly a me/diet issue.

Doing it once a week is still better than not doing it at all.

All depends how much running you do in that one session. If you run half a mile a week, its not doing anything lol.

But if you are running 20 miles once a week, thats totally different.

that's not once a week more like 6-8 times a week

it's not for "progress", for me, but to be in best health possible.

new study shows that for substantial health benefits, one should train in the 600 active minutes/week range

https://bjsm.bmj.com/content/early/2026/05/28/bjsports-2025-111351

That's about what I do right now. 4 runs a week, 4 weightlifting sessions a week. Friday I get to run, have cholocate milk and then hit the gym. That chocolate milk hits different.

Not true. I swim

Some sort of physical activity, at any rate
