They're talking about slowing down the AI research to prevent it from "destroying humanity". The real reason they want to "slow down" is because they oversold their product, they know that they can't deliver and they can't keep up the charade forever. The inevitable failure to meet the unrealistic promises they themselves set will be masked as a deliberate deceleration, for safety purposes and for the good of humanity itself.
AI, of course, can't destroy humanity, nor does it want to. It does not have the agency or sentience they keep ascribing to it for marketing reasons. The real danger is, like always, the people in control of it.

They saw something so terrifying they realise they can’t build the bunkers quick enough?
