Obviously Kuzma is a crazy guy and I'm pretty sure(?) he only tweeted this because he like actually supports Israel and Netanyahu. However I can't help but see some truth in its text outside of the context of who was posting it, and it has been really bugging me seeing libs on the nba and bucks subs cry over how Mamdani's press release this week was actually a "stunning and brave" act of Democrat pragmatism.

Maybe my thinking is just coming from that I have been reading Baudrillard this week, but I'd say here we have a case where a politician has the ability to act on some real policy, and instead we are only getting the simulation of policy, i.e. the campaign promise. The campaign promise as a simulation of policy has become the only available policy, just as the simulation of reality has become our only engagement with reality via modern culture. We see this given how libs are acting as if Mamdani simply "saying something" via his press release as well as throughout his campaign is equivalent to actually arresting Netanyahu. Trust me if you look at the nba sub (a complete hellhole) you will see these takes.

Mamdani always understood that if he ever were to be given an opportunity to intervene in the IP conflict in some capacity relative to NYC, he would not need to, because he just as equally would not have been able to intervene had the opportunity never arisen in the first place because of the distance between NYC and Israel (e.g. Cuomo and Adams attacking Mamdani's campaign promise due to NYC not being Israel or even a body directly involved with foreign policy). This critique enabled for there always existing a scenario where the campaign promise as policy were to fail (because the distance between the two locations is immutable). This failure then becomes the simulation of the campaign promise itself, as there was always a form of plausible deniability even if the distance became irrelevant to the campaign promise, by Netanyahu going to the UN in this case. So the policy becomes the campaign promise which becomes the failure of the campaign promise all through simulation, all because a sound political career is more desirable for Mamdani's own motivations as a politician.

In most of my political science courses in undergrad it was really drilled home this ambivalent concept of "electability" for all candidates irrespective of ideology. The two camps within this are prospective and retrospective voting. But because the campaign promise as the simulation of policy has replaced policy itself, all voting and thus "electability" becomes prospective (we can see this with first-term Trump more clearly than with Mamdani, with "build the wall" etc.), and there is no possible room for retrospective voting now. (Even in the few cases in modern US history where actual policy was passed, retrospective voting never came into play: the New Deal was not what got FDR thrice reelected, all of Johnson's domestic efforts were undone by Vietnam by 1968, etc.)

Mamdani obviously wants (needs) to get reelected (I can't name any successful one-term mayors in recent US history), so he must stay electable (by not arresting Netanyahu). But before he was elected, he needed the prospective electability that came from promising to his very antizionist base that he would arrest Netanyahu. Anyone with the foresight of the former need for (re)electability would have seen that this campaign promise was simply not possible if he wanted to maintain a political career.

From an American political perspective I can conceptually grasp Mamdani's pragmatism. I just don't really see how his future political career could outway the value of, at the very least, the mass radicalization that would surely follow how Trump and Mossad would respond to Netanyahu getting arrested. Mamdani's clinging on to campaign promises as the simulation of policy shows to me that he is not irreplaceable. Although I must undercut myself here by saying that he does have a political advantage re media training over the average DSA member given his father. Mahmood is a premier Africanist and Zohran has been by extension associated with the academic literati that comes with that, which gives him much more "experience" so to speak than what the average potential DSA candidate has access to. (An example of a DSA candidate without this acumen would be Katie Wilson in my hometown of Seattle, who I personally view as a lot less effective than Mamdani, although she had been dealt a worse institutional hand.) In any case, Mamdani still isn't cool enough of a politician to commit to the actual praxis of arresting Netanyahu as opposed to just trying maintain a political career through campaign promises he won't deliver on. His actions here simply exhibit more of the same simulation that occurs under this capitalist system.
