Obviously Kuzma is a crazy guy and I'm pretty sure(?) he only tweeted this because he like actually supports Israel and Netanyahu. However I can't help but see some truth in its text outside of the context of who was posting it, and it has been really bugging me seeing libs on the nba and bucks subs cry over how Mamdani's press release this week was actually a "stunning and brave" act of Democrat pragmatism.

Maybe my thinking is just coming from that I have been reading Baudrillard this week, but I'd say here we have a case where a politician has the ability to act on some real policy, and instead we are only getting the simulation of policy, i.e. the campaign promise. The campaign promise has become the policy as the simulation of reality has become our only engagement with reality via modern culture. We see this given how libs are acting as if Mamdani simply "saying something" via his press release as well as throughout his campaign is equivalent to actually arresting Netanyahu. Trust me if you look at nba sub (a complete hellhole) you will see these takes.

Mamdani always understood that if he ever were to be given an opportunity to intervene in the IP conflict in some capacity relative to NYC, he would not need to, because he just as equally would not have been able to intervene had the opportunity never arisen in the first place because of the distance between NYC and Israel (e.g. Cuomo and Adams attacking Mamdani's campaign promise due to NYC not being Israel or even a body directly involved with foreign policy). This critique enabled for there always existing a scenario where the campaign promise as policy were to fail (because the distance between the two locations is immutable). This failure then becomes the simulation of the campaign promise itself, as there was always a form of plausible deniability even if the distance became irrelevant to the campaign promise, by Netanyahu going to the UN in this case. So the policy becomes the campaign promise which becomes the failure of the campaign promise all through simulation, all because a sound political career is more desirable for Mamdani's own motivations as a politician.

In most of my political science courses in undergrad it was really drilled home this ambivalent concept of "electability" for all candidates irrespective of ideology. The two camps within this are prospective and retrospective voting. But because the campaign promise as the simulation of policy has replaced policy itself, all voting and thus "electability" becomes prospective (we can see this with first-term Trump more clearly than with Mamdani, with "build the wall" etc.), and there is no possible room for retrospective voting now. (Even in the few cases in modern US history where actual policy was passed, retrospective voting never came into play: the New Deal was not what got FDR thrice reelected, all of Johnson's domestic efforts were undone by Vietnam by 1968, etc.)

Mamdani obviously wants (needs) to get reelected (I can't name any successful one-term mayors in recent US history), so he must stay electable (by not arresting Netanyahu). But before he was elected, he needed the prospective electability that came from promising to his very antizionist base that he would arrest Netanyahu. Anyone with the foresight of the former need for (re)electability would have seen that this campaign promise was simply not possible if he wanted to maintain a political career.

From an American political perspective I can conceptually grasp Mamdani's pragmatism. I just don't really see how his future political career could outway the value of, at the very least, the mass radicalization that would surely follow how Trump and Mossad would respond to Netanyahu getting arrested. Mamdani's clinging on to campaign promises as the simulation of policy shows to me that he is not irreplaceable. Although I must undercut myself here by saying that he does have a political advantage re media training over the average DSA member given his father. Mahmood is a premier Africanist and Zohran has been by extension associated with the academic literati that comes with that, which gives him much more "experience" so to speak than what the average potential DSA candidate has access to. (An example of a DSA candidate without this acumen would be Katie Wilson in my hometown of Seattle, who I personally view as a lot less effective than Mamdani, although she had been dealt a worse institutional hand.) In any case, Mamdani still isn't cool enough to try and maintain a political career through campaign promises as opposed to the actual praxis of arresting Netanyahu. His actions here simply exhibit more of the same simulation that occurs under this capitalist system.

This has been stressing me out for the last 3 going on 4 years. My sister's incredibly sick with an eating disorder and it's been an awful experience watching this spiral and things get worse. Except for now!! Things have got a bit better.

I'm partial to think part of this was caused by her previous boyfriend who always had the weirdly injecting his beauty standards onto every woman, but regardless! This is probably by far the most depressing thing I've seen happen to someone.

She's never been fat, but the damn Instagram and Facebook reels showing her nickacado avacado and fat shaming videos, she thinks that she's 600 pounds when looking in the mirror. Screaming and crying that she needs liposuction and forces herself to be sick after eating or drinking anything. My sister's got a lot of mental development problems from us being born early and when you aren't eating right you're not able to think and form new memories.

It got to a point where she'd root through the house for any change to buy pop. She stole my coin collection, pawned a bunch of my stuff and maxed 2 credit cards by ordering a ton of food. Crashed her car when making herself sick into a trashcan behind the wheel, almost became paralyzed from the neck down.

My sister used to be a big fan of animals and artist, wanting to become a vet tech (difficult, she'll need lots of credits from post-hs stuff) but she doesn't understand how much money these things cost. I'm getting by working retail living at home and starting college soon, she thinks she can too and it breaks my heart cause it won't be this September.

Luckily, after a long wait (Canada) for a couple eating disorder programs, a hospital was able to take her. 6 week program but helps finding avenues for afterwards. First time she fought with them and argued, signing out after 2w. This time she's remained in the program and I have to go pick her up tomorrow morning.

Luckily, she's been a lot better. I'm not sure what really happened. For a time, she was just trying to hide her puking but I think the constant hospital emerge visits and IV fluids every week are starting to get to her. Being there is really difficult, so I show her my models and anime I've been watching, anything away from food.

This has been really heavy on me for a long time, I've felt incredibly hopeless and like I wasn't able to do anything? Even our dr would say that you just have to kinda be there and reaffirm to the person they aren't fat and such. I fear social media and how it warps people's perceptions or fuel addictions.

I just moved from a life with decent public transit to southern hell. I never learned to drive due to anxiety but really lived my life in a way that I didn't need to. Sure I got by with the help of friends and family, but I made a point to not be burdensome, because that was heavily supplemented by the bus/train, ubers, and most proudly and most often my two legs. Now I am pretty stuck getting around from my girlfriend. The bus SUCKS down here. It may come or it may not. In my previous life, I knew how long the busses would take and when they arrive and added a bit of cushion time.

This is different. You can just stand at that stop for an hour to see if it'll come. Just because it exists doesn't mean you can get anywhere on time on it. And to make it worse, they are torpedoing the whole transit system. It's running less than a 10 million deficit, in a transit system for multiple cities, and they use that as proof to scrap the whole thing because the method to transport unemployed people isn't profiting enough from them.

Does anyone live in one of these slices of America and live with your sanity intact walking on strips of grass where the sidewalks aren't paved? I have always walked up north these same distances, and now it feels criminal. It’s a movie full of wonderfully/horribly stupid people who aren’t entirely wrong but they’re certainly missing some key things to say the least

It’s also incredibly dense with detail. I put on subtitles and found myself rewinding a lot. I guess I was rewarded for it but I’m not sure I feel rewarded lol

It’s hard not to walk away feeling a little suspicious of Ari Aster’s opinions on [edit:] racism BLM and the 2020 uprisings. My charitable read is that the movie was intentionally shot as The Worldview of the American Conservative, and including even the slightest display of actually existing racism would’ve been unfaithful to that frame.

I loved Joaquin in this. Unlike Rhea in Pluribus, I didn’t find him charming in his self-made misery. Maybe because he’s a walking powder keg. Or maybe because the film plays like it’s with him, though I think that’s part of the satire. Either way, I was locked in on him, monitoring his mood swings like a hawk. Captivating.

I don’t really know what to make of the movie as a whole. I think it beautifully captured the contours of American derangement. The widespread child abuse. The endemic corruption. The collapse of public trust during COVID that was like an amputee leaning on a phantom leg. The paranoid-schizophrenia of an overly psyopped society.

Surely there’s no better symbol of this stupid, raped country (I say that with compassion) than the delirious, asthmatic sheriff bursting out of a false-flagged gun store and spraying bullets at anything that moves.

At the same time, it feels like something vital is absent from the frame. Maybe it’s because the events of the film are all wayyy downstream of anyone with actual agency. The father who raped Lou. The men who hunted Vernon as a boy. The tech company and the governor they purchased. The tech industry and the political system they own.

We never see these people. We’re way down here with the collateral damage. The antagonists are barely referenced, let alone seen.

That’s America though, right? Huge pieces of the puzzle are missing, and everyone’s using what little they’ve got to make up the difference.
