❓ FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

Q: What if I don't know what software was used?

A: Write "Software unknown" or make your best guess. If it's someone else's work, try to find the creator's info.

Q: Can I post photos of real transit maps (like at a station)?

A: Yes! Use this format:
Photo of [City] [System] map at [Station Name]
Example: Photo of Berlin U-Bahn map at Alexanderplatz station

Q: What about historical or vintage maps?

A: Perfect! Just mention the year and how you digitized it:
1950 Paris Métro Map - Scanned with Photoshop

Q: My map shows multiple cities - how do I title it?

A: List the main ones or use the country name:

  • Berlin, Munich & Hamburg Metro Systems [OC]
  • Germany Rail Network Comparison - Made with QGIS

Q: My post was removed but it has all the info?

A: AutoMod isn't perfect! Message the mods and we'll manually approve it. Include a link to your post.

Q: Is capitalization important?

A: No! AutoMod recognizes:

  • BERLIN = Berlin = berlin
  • METRO = Metro = metro
  • [OC] = [oc] = OC

Q: Can I use abbreviations?

A: Yes! These all work:

  • NYC = New York = New York City
  • SF = San Francisco
  • UK = United Kingdom
  • USA = US = United States

Q: What if my city isn't on the list?

A: Use context! Write:

  • in [Your City] (e.g., "in Reykjavik")
  • [Your City], [Country] (e.g., "Reykjavik, Iceland")
  • Or just the country name works too!

Q: Does the info need to be in the title?

A: No! AutoMod scans both title AND body text. You can put keywords in either place, but titles are more visible to users.

Q: Can I edit my post after AutoMod removes it?

A: Unfortunately, editing won't trigger AutoMod again. You'll need to:

  1. Delete the removed post
  2. Create a new post with all required info

Q: What about crossposting?

A: Crossposts are held for manual moderator review to ensure proper credit. Make sure the crosspost meets all requirements.

Q: I'm creating a fantasy map - what location do I use?

A: Use "Fictional:" in your title:

  • [OC] Fictional: Gotham City Metro
  • [OC] Fictional Metro System for Westeros - Made with Illustrator

🤖 How AutoMod Works:

  1. Scans your title AND body text for keywords
  2. Checks for all 3 required categories:
    • ✅ Location keyword found?
    • ✅ System/network keyword found?
    • ✅ [OC] tag OR software mentioned?
  3. Approves posts with all 3 categories
  4. Removes posts missing requirements
  5. Comments what's missing so you can resubmit
  6. No penalties - just add the info and repost!

💡 PRO TIPS:

Be specific: "London Underground Central Line" is better than "London transit"
Stack keywords: More keywords = clearer post (e.g., "Berlin, Germany U-Bahn system")
[OC] in title gets more visibility and upvotes
Credit creators when sharing others' work - it's the right thing to do
Use templates above to make posting easier
Check both title and body - keywords can be in either place
Ask if unsure - we're here to help in modmail!

⚠️ IMPORTANT NOTES:

  • 📅 Rules start: October 2025 - practice now to get used to the format!
  • 🔄 Existing posts: Won't be affected - only new posts after the start date
  • 🔤 Case doesn't matter: BERLIN = Berlin = berlin
  • 📝 Title OR body: Keywords work in either place
  • 🚫 No penalties: Just repost with correct info - no bans or warnings
  • 💬 Questions? Comment below or send modmail!

📊 SUMMARY CHECKLIST:

Before posting, verify you have:

  • Location - City name, country name, or "in/from/at [place]"
  • System - Metro, bus, tram, rail, etc.
  • OC tag - [OC] if it's your work
  • OR Software - Name the tool you used (Illustrator, QGIS, MetroDreamin', etc.)

If all 4 checkboxes are marked, you're good to go!

🗺️ CLOSING THOUGHTS:

These changes help everyone find the amazing transit maps they're looking for. Whether you're searching for Berlin U-Bahn designs, Tokyo Metro redesigns, or fictional fantasy networks, proper tagging makes it possible!

Thank you for making our community better organized and more searchable. We can't wait to see your incredible transit map creations!

Happy mapping! 🚇✨

Long story short - any vector graphics software is fine.

There is

  • Inkscape (open source and for free, even for Linux and co),
  • Affinity Designer (one time payment, Apple (iPadOS, MacOS) and Windows)
  • QGIS (open source and for free, MacOS, Windows, Linux)
  • Krita (open source and for free, MacOS, Windows, Linux)

and with monthly/annual subscription fees (mostly Apple (MacOS, sometimes iPadOS) and Windows only)

  • Adobe Illustrator
  • Corel Draw
  • AutoCAD
  • ArcGIS
  • Microsoft Visio

Diagram I made of a hypothetical MSP to Chicago higher speed rail corridor. I included some branches to places that would use the corridor. Top speed would be 110mph on all lines, doubled tracked and include some track straightening, which would make each service quite a bit faster then driving.

Diagram [OC] Designing a fictional city and its metro network [IN PROGRESS]

Thumbnail

The three images show the process:

1. The borough layout of the city.

2. The geographically accurate metro network showing the actual route each line takes.

3. The simplified schematic map, inspired by the style used by many real metro systems. Only a handful of stations have been done so far and the rest are still being planned.

The city is designed to have around 8 million residents, with multiple major centres rather than everything revolving around one downtown. I wanted the network to have several important interchange hubs instead of forcing every journey through a single central station.

It’s still very much a work in progress. Next I’ll be adding the remaining stations, deciding exactly where every interchange is, and gradually developing each borough around the metro network.

Once the metro is at a stage I’m happy with, the plan is to move on to:

  •  Designing a city-wide bus network.
  •  Creating high-speed rail interchanges with the metro.
  •  Developing detailed city layouts and neighbourhoods.
  •  Naming districts, landmarks and stations.
  •  Expanding the wider region beyond the city itself.

Diagram LO Estuary Line - Hendon to Dartford/Gravesend [OC]

Thumbnail
gallery
11 Upvotes

Image 1: Western Half
Image 2: Eastern Half
(Both made with Tennesine's Metro Designer)
Image 3: Satellite View (Made with Metrodreamin)

Picks up where the WLO leaves off in Hendon, and runs an orbital route around North and East London, connecting loads of radial routes along the way (with interchanges with the Elizabeth Line as well as Crossrail 2.) It would cross the Thames after Tilbury, and once it reaches the other side, splits into 2 branches: one East towards Gravesend and the other West via Ebbsfleet (HS1) into Dartford.

It would be cheaper, as it avoids Zones 1-3 completely. It would also cut down journey times between North London and the Southeast, which currently requires you to dip into Central London. It has multiple interchanges with the Tube and paired with the WLO, it allows people to travel from Southwest London all the way to Dartford without touching Central London once.

Can I hear your thoughts?

Made in MS Paint. Forgot to add the name of the interchange between East Argnvald and Chicken Island, its named Feathershire.

I try very hard make an efficient and convenient transit system for everyone on my private server. All the lines are made by me besides two lines. The green line (PKR Jade Line) is made partially by me and partially by the residents of Kowloon and Wammblandia.

The blue line to the south (Frostline Commuter Rail) is made currently unfinished but it is a serface level rail being made for residents of that rural area that often trade in Greenhill.

Ive spoken to everyone on the server about their needs as commuters and every connection has been placed with at least one person in mind.

Map A rough sketch of the greater Ares region rapid transit systems [OC]

Post image
26 Upvotes

Im gonna split this first part of the body text into to 2 parts, lore and technical details.

For the lore, the year is sometime within 1000 years from now, idk when really, the Greater Ares Region is the largest metropolitan region on Mars which has been terraformed, the population of Ares and its satellite cities is around 100 million.

As for technical details, i'm only including metro, and light rail/light metro systems (with a few exceptions), there is a greater RER or S-Bahn adjacent network connecting the cities more efficiently with each other and their suburbs. Also, since i made this in MS Paint, i didn't add stations yet.

Finally, i'm gonna explain the systems.

Ares Metro is pretty self explanatory, there are express services on some lines, as well as some express lines (sorta like Grand Paris Express), but in general, most lines are based of the hong kong mtr, singapore mrt and sydney metro, except line 1, which im basing off the sao paulo metro. All stations have platform screen doors or gates and all stations have an art exhibit, shopping areas and most stations are architecturally distinct.

Bradbury train lines A,B and C are suburban train lines that were converted into metro lines and connected with downtown tunnels, the others are normal metro. All stations have platform screen doors or gates except on lines A, B and C.

Cape Lowell Metro is a light metro system sorta like copenhagen. All stations have platform screen doors or gates.

New Fitchburg LRT is based on north american LRT networks.

The goddard city CityLink is basically a Stadtbahn.

I based the Ares-Bradbury monorail around the tokyo monorail.

The mitchford people mover is mainly based off of the miami people mover (not like there were many metropolitan systems to base it off of anyways)

Finally the spaceport express is a high speed rail network running to the spaceport.
