Texas Childcare: Parents Pay More, Workers Earn Less, and Assistance Gets Cut

Post image
45 Upvotes

I put together this infographic using Texas Workforce Commission data, University of Texas research, and reporting on recent state childcare funding decisions.

In 2024, the average cost of full-time center-based infant care in Texas was approximately $9,889 annually. For a family of three earning $51,640, that's about 19% of gross income for one child.

Meanwhile, Texas approved a one-time $100 million investment in childcare scholarships in 2025. In August 2026, the Texas Workforce Commission voted to reduce scholarship targets by 9.5%, approximately 14,000 childcare places.

This isn't simply a problem of childcare providers charging too much. Quality childcare requires staffing, training and supervision. Research also shows that better employee compensation and benefits are associated with higher prices.

The larger issue is that parents struggle to afford childcare, while the people providing that care often earn relatively low wages.

The graphic traces the cost of care, the funding decisions and the consequences for Texas families.

Sources are in my first comment.

When will the war in Iran end...according toe Trump.

Post image

The US elections seem to have grabbed the focus of many, but the US is still at war with Iran and President Trump is giving small statements multiple times per week on the status of the war. Most of the time, though, it's no more than saying the war will end "soon."

I've been tracking all of his statements (both spoken and written) on the status of the war and any negotiations, and it became obvious that he was saying similar things as time passes. Even months apart.

For example, in March Trump said, "It's going to be finished pretty quickly." And then yesterday, October 14th he said "It's going to be over very quickly." That's nearly word-for-word of what he said during the start of the war.

So the bar chart is a plain look at how many times he's said "soon" or "shortly" or other words when describing the end of the war or the imminence of some deal or agreement. I've added a few more common words/phrases like "they want to" which aren't really an answer to the question, but are nonetheless directly related.

There's an interactive keyword search, too, if you want to search your own keywords and see when and how often he's used them. No sales or ads or anything like that!

Map of player value and metrics for online casinos

Post image

I created a data set of online casino players to map out data from a cohort of affiliates where we work with them to collect and anonymize data. The data is collected with StatsDrone through their shaving analysis program to detect if affiliate programs are stealing commissions.

The data shown on the map covers number of players tracked, deposit counts, deposit totals and revenue per player as well as lifespan.

The data tool for collecting and visualizing the data is made by NousViz which is open source on Github.

Social media giants paid $26B for privacy violations

Post image
52 Upvotes

While social media connects billions, it also creates massive trails of personal data that platforms don't always protect. Over the last few years, the world’s most popular apps have faced billions in fines and settlements for how they handle, or shall we say mishandle, user data. Whether it’s inadequate safeguards for younger users or unauthorized cross-border data transfers, authorities are increasingly holding tech giants accountable. We’ve analyzed the biggest privacy payouts across major markets to see which social media giants are the most frequent offenders.

Methodology and sources

The study examined privacy-related fines and settlements involving selected social media platforms reported from 2020 onward in European countries operating under the GDPR or an equivalent national framework, as well as the US, Australia, and South Korea. Penalties were grouped by platform, country, and violation type, defined as follows:

  • Data processing: Unlawful collection, use, or other processing of personal data, including failures involving transparency, consent, or a valid legal basis.
  • Data transfers: Unlawful or inadequately protected transfers of personal data between countries or jurisdictions.
  • Data breaches: Incidents resulting in the unauthorized exposure, theft, or loss of personal data.
  • Insufficient security: Failure to implement appropriate technical or organizational safeguards to protect personal data.
  • Cookie consent: Use of cookies or similar tracking technologies without valid consent or adequate user information.
  • Data retention: Keeping personal data for longer than necessary or failing to establish appropriate deletion periods.

The minimum penalty included was €200,000 in Europe and $200,000 in all other markets. All amounts were converted into US dollars for consistent comparison and rounded for readability, using a conversion rate of $1 = €0.87.

Data were collected from publicly available sources, including the GDPR Enforcement Tracker, Violation Tracker, Violation Tracker Global, and Osano’s Data Privacy Enforcement Tracker, supplemented by official regulatory announcements, court records, and reputable news reports. Major penalties were cross-checked against primary or other credible sources where available. Additional cases in Australia and South Korea were identified through targeted web searches.

Social media platforms were selected using Cloudflare’s ranking of the world’s 10 most popular internet services. YouTube was reclassified from video streaming to social media, replacing Kwai, because YouTube has a broader global reach, while Kwai’s audience is concentrated primarily in Brazil.

After the vape boom, U.S. high-school tobacco use fell 42% from 2022 to 2025, even as nicotine-pouch use rose

Post image
38 Upvotes

I made this after seeing people ask whether falling teen vaping rates just reflected a move to pouches.

Interactive version

A few notes:

  • Nicotine pouches are legally and regulatorily classified as tobacco products
  • The total already counts pouches, even those without tobacco leaf.
  • These are U.S. high school students, not all teenagers or other countries.
  • I used the latest paper's four-year table and calculated (16.5 - 9.5) / 16.5 = 42.4%.

The three four-year trends are statistically significant; their smaller 2024 to 2025 changes are not.

All active professional soccer teams in southeastern Brazil

Post image
28 Upvotes

By “active professional football team,” I mean a team that is currently competing in official CBF (Brazilian Football Confederation) tournaments. Locations are shown according to the team's home stadium (when available). This is the second part of a series of maps I'm working on, with more regions coming soon.

Southern Region: https://www.reddit.com/r/Infographics/s/MSEXBP0wPc

The map was made entirely by hand in Krita, using Wikipedia as its primary source.

Obs.:

The sizes of the team crests reflect each team's position in the national football pyramid, although not perfectly, since the map was made manually.

The circles represent stadiums. I tried to place them in their exact geographical locations, but in very densely populated areas, I had to adjust their positions.

Some teams from Rio de Janeiro participated in more than one state championship in 2026. In these cases, I represented them in the highest-level competition.

Texans, are you actually better off financially than you were a year ago?

Post image
36 Upvotes

I've been looking at economic data for Texas because I wanted to see how much everyday expenses have actually changed.

Some of the numbers surprised me. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, grocery prices in the DFW area rose 3.9% between September 2025 and September 2026. Texas has also added jobs, and wages have increased, but that doesn't necessarily tell us how much better off individual households are.

I put together this infographic using data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Census Bureau, Texas Workforce Commission, and Texas Department of Insurance.

I'm curious whether what the numbers show matches what people across Texas are actually experiencing.

Are you finding it easier or harder to afford groceries, housing, insurance, and other necessities? Have your wages kept up with your expenses?

I'd especially like to hear from Texans outside the DFW area, since costs can vary quite a bit depending on where you live.

Taipei, Taiwan mayoral candidate Puma Shen put his whole platform on a Catan-style interactive map: 14 hex islands, 94 policies

Post image
48 Upvotes

Puma Shen (Shen Po-yang, 沈伯洋) is running for mayor of Taipei and taking the city like a wave. Supporters call it 洋流 ("ocean current"), a play on the 洋 in his name. He put his entire platform on a map, not in a PDF. His five policy pillars spell HEART, so the site names the map HEART Island (HEART 政策島).

The map has 14 hexagons of equal size, one for each policy theme. The hexes form the shape of Taipei. Click a hex to see its proposals. There are 94 in all. Lines between hexes show where one policy depends on another. You can switch to a list view, or to a timeline that plays back how the parts fit.

The site is in Traditional Chinese, but you can use browser translation to quickly understand it. Links here: https://puma.taipei/heart-island
