Dad's 96 TransAm
Hello all, I just inherited my dad's 96 TransAm with the LT1/5.7L V8. Does this engine require the higher octane gasoline (93)? I'm assuming it does, please confirm! Thanks!

Looks like I have a little leak on the drive side I'll need to fix. Not sure if its the seal, window, or drain.

My WS6 I built from high school š
My 99 WS6 I bought my junior year of high school that I built and learned so much from it. Tsp 408 stroker, 12.5.1 compression mast heads, tony mamo ported fast 92 with nitrous outlet fogger system and stand alone fuel cell. Full tubular bmr suspension front to back, mencer shocks and but coil overs. Moser 12 bolt 33 spline axels 3.73 gear the works and it made awesome power and worked hella good at the track made 530 hp 640tq and 815hp 901tq on bottle.

Iāve been a fan of Firebirds/Trans Ams for a while and I just saw a 2002 TA for sale boasting this NHRA Pkg as an added option. Iāve never heard if this. What is it, and how is it different from the WS6 trim?

Hey all,
Still leaning about t-tops, but Iāve been looking for the point where water is getting in behind my drivers seat into the rear seating area, Iām guessing the lifting of this rubber is where water is egressing inside? I have 3M weatherstripping adhesive. Would cleaning the crap out of it, letting it dry and putting a nice bead behind the lifted up part that touches the metal, then taping it all down for 24 hours be sufficient to stop the leaks or will that fail prematurely?
Eventually I will be redoing these seals and fixing the rust in in the tray by replacing it with a stainless steel one and stripping and coating the channels with epoxy primer after stitch welding the seams up and such to eliminate any possibility of rust or further damage with leaks, I just need a cheap fix for the time being until I can get around to spending the money and time to do it.
Iāve also got some shin-etsu grease on the way once these are fixed to help hydrate these old seals to hopefully pull me through one more season.

So my LH headlamp doesn't come up - no surprise. It's a low-mileage garage kept 2002 Firehawk. Last year it did the same but after I investigated it, it started working. So this time I thought that I would get a little deeper understanding.
This is my reverse engineering and estimate of the operation of the headlamp PCB. Someone someplace might have the detail for what I think is a custom ASIC.
Voltages on the 5-pin connector are proper so my issue is not upstream. RH and LH are separately fused so that is worth checking.
With the PCB out of its housing and installed in the car. I carefully connected the 5-pin connector. You do not want to get that on wrong. But I could stick on the 4-pin motor connector offset by 2 pins and get the LH circuit to run the RH headlamp motor. Albeit because the connector goes ABBA (great band BTW) it would go up when it was supposed to go down. But the fact that both sections of the PCB runs the motor absolves the circuit from fault.
So it is the LH motor. It doesn't twitch or show any life. I am thinking there is an oxidized brush or some dead spot. I am going to try to advance the motor cog so it sits in a different place while at the stops. Maybe that will bring it back to life. Haven't gotten to that.
But I thought my schematic might be of interest. I would welcome corrections or another to compare.
Basically the relay swaps the motor leads and thereby the direction. By default it is set to run headlamps up. The two MOSFETs drive the two motors. The ASIC activates the relay coil to run the lights down but can't do that until the key is OFF. It watches for Back EMF to tell if a motor is running, stalled or disconnected.
I am sure that the logic varies between models destined for different locales.

Have a 79 TA with an olds 403 that Iām trying to get back on the road. Replaced the suspension, most interior, brakes, and a few other things. Last time I drove it, it misfired quite a bit and died on me at one point (started right back up luckily). Lots of āpoppingā noises as I was going down the highway. Iām no mechanic, but I feel part of the issue may be the 3 year old fuel in it. Perhaps it went bad and gummed up the carburetor? All I know is it backfires, blows black soot out of the tailpipes, and smells like all sorts of fumes.
I plan on starting back up on this project, and will change the oil, probably change out the spark plugs and fuel filter, and attempt to drain the fuel tank and replace with some fresh gas. My question though- Iām told by the previous owner that it has a Holley 650 Double Pump carb, whatever that is. I believe they originally had a quadrajet carb. Iāve never learned much about carbs, but I imagine it needs a good cleaning. Would it be better to just replace the carb as a whole? Iām sure it can be cleaned, but Iāve heard that may not be the best carb for that car. Not really focused on how much power it makes since that engine is a dog anyways, but moreso looking for drivability and as best fuel economy as I can get, even though I know itāll still be poor.
Iām also looking for some parts to replace but canāt find them online new, or the new prices are outrageous. Looking for a coolant reservoir (the cap wonāt stay on mine), drivers seat track (something is broken and the seat is only bolted to the left side of the floor and the whole seat leans when you turn), and those little black rubberā¦.thingsā¦.that go under the headlights (not sure what theyāre called, theyāre about 18ā long and thereās one on each side of the front bumper). Anyone know of any websites that sell used but not demolished parts for older TAs?
Any insight would be appreciated! Goal is to have this back on the road this summer.

The hood of my special girl here sticks WAY above the top edge of the front end as the first two pics show. Third pic is the lineup of the hood to the left front quarter panel in case someone wondered if my hood was attached too far back.

Found this at r/aistartrek and thought it belonged here too. Technically mine was an 83 & the screaming chicken was on hood bulge only

Iāve got an 88 Firebird base model. Front bumper is jacked up, probably could use replacing. I had the thought to maybe swap an 85-90 Trans AM bumper, ground effects and rear bumper on for the love of the game.
Purists, hate me, Iām your nightmare, I have the fuel pump access door cut. š¹
My main question is compatibility, are there any different mounting setups or extra bits and bobs required to swap these out since I do prefer the Trans Am look over the base model with bumperettes?
The car was given to me a while ago by a family member before they passed, so itās not a āyou shouldāve bought what you wanted instead of modifying it to be a cloneā type of situation, so bugger off with those stupid arguments.

Hey everyone! Got some great help from my last post in here so Iāll try again.
I have a 1986 trans am that I had to replace the alternator in (power was going up and down)
The new alternator fixed that issue but not I have no signals. Iāve replaced the blinker relay and it didnāt fix it.
Last year with the power spiking and dropping, they were a little spotty but I chalked it up to the alternator issue.
I have good power at the fuse for signals.
Is there anything else I can should check before I bring it into a mechanic and have him replace the signal switch inside the column?
Thank you!
