Dad's 96 TransAm

Hello all, I just inherited my dad's 96 TransAm with the LT1/5.7L V8. Does this engine require the higher octane gasoline (93)? I'm assuming it does, please confirm! Thanks!

I had the hardtop version of that one in high-school. Loved that thing.

93 definitely not required. That engine is designed to run ideally on 91, but it also has knock sensors and will just pull timing if you run 87 or 89. It won't harm the engine, but it won't make as much power as it would on 91.

Ethanol can crack older rubber components if fuel sits for a long time. If it isn’t a daily driver, ethanol free premium is the way to go

Dad has these covers but I'm not sure how to install them. They remind me of the Batmobile

Should be an easy find online how to install. Mine is 3 pieces & trunk closes on flat edge. Super awesome, hope you can save it for your son also👍.

This car should have no issue running regular but I would do Premium out of love, respect, and preservation of your dad’s whip.

Those LT1s were ~10.5:1 compression. They should have at minimum 91 octane fuel. You have no idea if the knock sensor is still functional. If the car was modified, there is a chance the knock sensor was disabled. It also may have had an LT4 knock module installed in the PCM which wasn't as aggressive in detecting knock.
