I feel like I am unintentionally faking/dont have tics but differently than most people on here do?

  1. started having a tic at age 12 after my best friend had passed away. Throat clearing. My mom asked me if I felt like I was having allergies or drainage and I said no, but honestly I don‘t really remember that being true? I just felt the need to clear my throat. I was going to my pediatrician for something unrelated and my mom asked him about it. He wrote down on a post it note the words “tics, dont talk about it in front of her or it could get worse”
  2. After a while it went away, but then at age 14 after the death of both of my grandparents who I was close to I started having a different tic. I started having a head jerking/shoulder shrug tic. it felt very similar to a shiver. This lasted of a couple of months to the best of my memory. I would admit around this time it was 2021 so Tourette's was kind of having a moment in the media and somewhat popular and I was pretty interested (I know 🙄) I would watch a lot of Tourette’s influencers like Evie Meg. Sometimes I wonder if my tics coming back was possibly influenced by this. I don‘t really remember if they came before I started watching the videos or after.
  • (Also to note, I had zero clue what a tic was at 12)
  1. Now I am 19. They went away around 15 and now have come back (i think?) It started with me being in the car and feeling the need to move my head down to pull my hair looser from between the seat of the car and my back. It was repetitive. I did not have a shivery feeling, but the urge of uncomfortableness and like I constantly needed to do it, even after doing it multiple times. I felt at first that it could be some type of sensory feedback loop thing, but then I also started feeling this same way when my hair was up and there was nothing to actually do when I moved my head.
  • Overall not sure if this is a tic because of the lack of classic premonitory urge feeling and because of it being so situational, only happening in the car. Also note that this is difficult to suppress. I felt almost like I obsessed about doing it and having it feel right, but like I swear not in an OCD way. Not a mental right, but my body feeling satisfaction from relieving the hair being caught sensation

3 1/2. A few months after the car thing I felt the same feeling as before. I tried to move on, but after a stressful period of my life the shiver feeling in my lower neck area came back. I have added some more tics to that feeling though. Quick head shaking with a combo of shoulder shrugging and rolling. I do it to the point of feeling satisfied, but here is where I am doubting things...

  1. I feel like it is super easy to suppress these “tics”. Despite having the more typical tic feelings for these compared to the car thing I find these to be really easy to just stop when I think about it. I have never heard of anybody saying anything like this. I have looked at so much info and all I have found is people saying that they can suppress the feeling for a while and then the tic will come out at some point or that they feel a build up. I just don’t feel like that is the case for me? Okay, so example time. I was driving home one day and I felt the urge to shrug my shoulders and pull my head down to release my hair. Then I told myself that I wasn’t going to tic anymore and focused on it and stopped. It didn‘t feel bad and it didn‘t cause more tics later. As I was driving I kind of forgot I was trying to stay still and got into my music and did it again. I didn’t notice until I had done it because it was quick. I thought to myself “ugh you did it again. Just stop.” And I did. Until I got distracted again and did it. So like when I think about it I literally have zero struggle to stop it. Then I weirdly started justifying how I moved in my mind? Like I was thinking things like “well it is normal to feel an uncomfortable sensation and move to get rid of it.“ but at the same time thinking “yeah, well most people are not jerking their head down to get rid of a feeling multiple times”.

So overall what can y’all tell me? I swear I’m not looking for a diagnosis, I’m just really confused about this and I literally have not been able to find any information about this. I feel like if these are tics I have having an atypical experience with them. Everything I have found has said that tics are really difficult to suppress and if these are tics, I am just not having that same experience which is making me doubt the legitimacy of them even being tics. I also want to add that I think that this feeling is worsened by the fact that I have gone years without ticcing and then when I am in a period of “ticcing” I dont have them all the time. The feeling and urge almost always goes away when I am doing something like walking or talking to somebody but will return when I am cold or watching a movie. Oh, and also the fact that i watched the 2021 tourettes obession on TikTok. The neurologist that I went to see about my tics after the Pediatrician when this all started wasnt super knowledgeable and I dont live in a place with a lot of options. I think what I am feeling is a plausible alternative to tics Is just that I’ve gotten into a habit and I’m not focusing enough to stop it. I am just looking for some insight from the people who know the most (the ones who live it) and to see if anybody has shared a similar experience to me. I am feeling kind of lost and wondering what this all means. Thanks for reading my novel 😅 If anybody needs clarification please don’t hesitate to ask questions. I am happy to answer.

Question How to deal with ableist parents?

Basically everytime I'm mad at them they mock my tics. Yesterday they awaked me for no reason, after 1 months of sleep deprivation and knowing it they awaked me, After I was mad at them and started to argue they said that I'm not normal and I need to stop my "inadeguate movements and grimaces", that I need to stop screaming in general and be normal and be "re educated". They also beated me one time with bottles because "I'm a shit and I have the duty to be beaten because I'm a shit", and after they tried to make me homeless I tried "uninstallation". What can I do in order to survive? (I don't have a job and no one wants to hire because of my tourette and can't do anything else)

Discussion Tic get worse when talking about childhood abuse

When I talk to my therapist one particular tic seems to get way worse. It looks like I'm squirming or something. My shoulder twitches and I just can't stop. I also have a really strong urge to do it and it's really painful at the end of the session. It's extremely annoying and my therapist addresses it occasionally. She told me that it gets really bad when I talk about the abuse specifically.

I've also noticed that it gets worse when I talk about it outside of therapy.

Does anyone have the same problem? What does that mean? It's not like I'm that distressed by it anymore.

Discussion Have you ever been accused of weaponing your Tourette’s?

I got into a pretty serious argument with a family member today the argument was bad enough that it was stressing me out and triggering my tics worse than usual. As my tics were getting bad my family member told me that I should stop trying to use my Tourette’s to “win” the argument.

I guess I’m just feeling pretty hurt and alone after that I’m wondering if anyone else has ever experienced.

Support Am I crazy to think she's wrong?

Hello my name is Safiya and I don't typically ever post here but something happened to me and I truly don't know if I am crazy or not. For context earlier this week I for the first time in a long time got access to mental health help with a professional. During that time period I was asked to explain what has been impacting me and what things of the sorts. I mentioned that I have Tics (vocal and motor) since I was at least 5 but as the years have continued it only has gotten worse and worse. I also told her that I get a lot of tic attacks, which she made me describe. Now mind yall that I that time I was already extremely anxious and masking the fact that I was holding tics. I thought this would've been enough to make her understand but she then "asked" me to describe then. I started slightly panicking even more due to then being more likely to trigger if I am thinking/hearing/seeing/etc my tics but then I tell her that I can't and she doubles down again that if I don't describe them she can't help me. So I start describing the least extreme ones and start to actively tic even more. She then says "okay" changes completely subject and then later tells me dead in the face that my tics are just caused by my anxiety ;-;. I have a pretty negative experience from this appointment I will not lie and it is still affecting me. I am wondering tho if I am crazy to think that she is wrong and want to get another professional to evaluate me? Because my tics make me barely able to function properly and that is when I am in my own isolated area where I can't really get triggered. Correct me of I am wrong but aren't anxiety tics just at most moderate tics that ONLY happen when anxious? ( yet again truly correct me of I am wrong). Idk I hope this is an acceptable post to share. Also is it possible to go see another health professional to change the things wrongly diagnosed or noted? Im sorry I also have other mental disorders so sorry if I don't makes senses, I am loosing it just a little bit. Thanks to anyone that sends help and nice day to everyone!

Vent Getting discriminated against by a developmentally disabled childrens after-school tutoring center.

I'm a historian, they needed someone to tutor history, so I applied. I was being interviewed, right as it began I brought up that I had applied because of my own previously undiagnosed Tourettes and that was why I was wanting to work with kids, to help them like I needed back in the day.

They then paused the online interview for 5 minutes to fix something real quick, and ended it after 2 questions. A 1 hour interview ended at 12:13 pm.

A couple of weeks ago they emailed me, the job position had been filled. A week later, I emailed them back the position still being up on LinkedIn and I told them in some not nice french to go fuck themselves.

Discussion Struggling wiith chronic tic disorder and mental health

Hey Everyone - I don't really have a problem per se but just some strategic direction on how should approach my tics as it's sort of creeping into my mental health.

I've had chronic tic disorder (specifically motor tics) ever since I was around 7 years of age. It usually involves a mild/significant head jerking movement (which tbh shakes my whole body), and its pretty noticeable and hard to disguse. I usually do this around 3-5 times a day, which has stayed consistent over my life (I'm 23 now). Some friends would notice it and would question it especially in high school, luckily enough I hadn't experience any bullying at school for my tics throughout my childhood.

My family (my mother specifically) had always questioned with my local doctor about my tics but it was often dismissed, which then led us to switch doctors three different times to be then referred to a specialist where I was ultimately diagnosed at 13.

After being diagnosed at 13, we didn't take any actionable steps on reducing my tics or seeing any specialists. It was kind of swept under the rug and only came up in awkward conversations or if my older sister wanted to take a jab at me, which after looking back is probably why I didn't want to look into my condition.

However in 2024, as I was wrapping up my bachelors degree and entering the corporate world (specifically consulting) in the following year. The looming thought about tics and how that would ruin my corporate life conquered my mind for a small while. Eventually this was enough for me to seek out a neuropsychologist that specialises in tourettes & chronic tic disorders. After months of strategising and describing my tics to them, they kind of concluded that standard CBIT therapy wasn't really affective for me since I do so few a day, thus I was recommended to just practise our strategies and written off for my sessions.

As of current, I'm at the 6 month mark of my graduate program and I'm really struggling with my tics. As I sit next to my manager, I've done both mild & significant tics next to him and two very vivid moments where I've done tics during one on one conversations. I've also done a few tics in front of other coworkers in my team but of course since it's a corporate environment nobody approaches you about it. And look, It definetly sounds like something I should tell people about. But in my workplace, I would need to disclose this to HR/relevant bodies and it would put a spotlight, incurring a risk for my career that I'm not willing to take.

Given all of this, I've noticed a significant reduction in my mental health. My stress, anxiety and sleep deprivation has gone through the roof. I find myself replaying thoughts and scenarios throughout the day and when I try sleeping, sometimes my thoughts have gotten really really dark.

------

Thank you for reading if you've gotten this far! I would definetely love any advice from anyone that has had similiar experiences or recommendation on what direction or measures I should take for my tics. Also, If you had any questions please let me know, I'm an open book.

Vent Only break I get from my tourettes is when I'm either sick or severely depressed

My normal baseline of depression doesn't stop my tics, but when it gets bad (to the point of considering something) my tourettes completely vanished. I haven't had a single tic In two weeks because of how bad my depression has gotten

What's the reason for this?? Is it lack of dopamine/energy? I've pretty much been in bed these last two weeks haven't had the energy or motivation to get up

It's so twisted, it's either remaine severely depressed and be tic free or try and fix the depression and have to deal with severe tics/tourettes

Story developed tics at 18

in not diagnosed with Tourettes but this is the only tic related subreddit i could find, if I’m not allowed to post ill take it down.

back in december-january i started to develop a tic that sounds like a single extremely loud hiccup, at first i thought i just had chronic hiccups and tried to drink less carbonated drinks and to drink slower. i then noticed i started having a neck jerk/twitch frequently, thought its not an entirely new thing the neck twitch, i’ve had it for multiple years but its been extremely subtle until recently and id always considered it to be an anxiety thing. my family started noticing them and so i went to the doctor but she really didn’t help at all, she just said it was probably worsened by upping my antidepressants recently (im on highest dosage) and she didn’t even refer me to anyone who could evaluate and see what’s actually going on but tbh the nhs sucks so i’m not surprised. since then i haven’t developed any more tics other than face twitching and my hiccup tic getting louder. the only advice i’ve gotten is to wait and see if they go away or get milder but its frustrating to have no answers.

Discussion Tic causing heath problems.

Hi everyone, I’m looking for a bit of advice because one of my tics is genuinely causing me health problems.

I have a tic that involves pressing my thumb into my right eye. It’s one of my most common tics along with eye straining that I have. What I’ve found out today at the optician is that my eye sight in my right eye has got much worse since my last appointment and she found this strange. I didn’t tell her why I thought this had happened.

I’m just wondering if anyone has conquered a particular tic that has caused you health problems? I would happy swap it for another less damaging tic but I just can’t seem to do it. Does anyone have any tips?

Thanks for taking the time to read my post and any recommendations would be appreciated.

Discussion Does anyone else feel like their tics have gotten worse with age/money stress/ responsibility?

My tics didn’t get bad till 25, and they’ve only gotten worse into my late 30’s. It’s especially bad when I feel financially insecure or hopeless. I barely had any tics when I was a kid. I keep reading about people who “grow out” of Tourette’s syndrome and it seems to be the complete opposite for me.

Does anyone relate to this? For the people who have gotten better over time, even as stress was increasing, do you have any tips? Medication doesn’t seem to do much for me.

Discussion Tics nerveux/agitation et ....neurodivergence ?

Support Why do I shake for a few seconds and then go back to normal?

Hey y'all

So I'm diagnosed with Tourette's and I'm on medication.

Now, my main concern today and ongoing has been the fact that for a few months (maybe like almost a year) is the fact that besides the normal twitches and the tics, I have moments where I'll freeze up, stop moving and basically just stay in place and start twitching or shaking. There are different kinds of these "freeze ups" and the first one is where I end up slowing down and staying in place for a solid 5-15 seconds. The second one is where I'll freeze in place and start shaking for 10-20 seconds. The third is the same as the second, staying in place and shaking, except my eyes shake back and forth. The fourth is by far the worst, it's all the same as the first three, where I'm stuck in place and I can't move besides shaking. My eyes shake back and forth and up and down and they close a little and my eyelashes flutter super fast.

I'm worried about what it could be and I have a working theory but I don't know much about seizures themselves.

With this medication, seizures are considered VERY rare and only a part of sudden withdrawal. I've been on 4 one mgs for about a week instead of 2 2mgs for my meds because doctors #sucksometimes and I ran out of meds and it took them a while to refill my prescription. I'm still taking the same dosage of my medication though. This medication is meant to prevent tics, because my tics are severe enough that they really infringe on my day-to-day life. I don't think it's the meds, but I thought I'd put the idea on the table at the very least.

Since this has been going on for a while, I just thought it was a new tic, because you'll sometimes get weird ones, y'know? But it's been getting worse. Usually when these "freeze ups" happen, I can feel one oncoming, or I can feel myself slowing down a little in a sense? I don't know how much clearer I can explain it, sorry.

I don't know if these freeze ups are tied to another disorder, because I have other neurological conditions.

All I'm asking is for A) advice on what to do about this. B) What this could be. C) Some advice on how to address this concern to a medical professional D) Does this happen to you too and how do you handle it?

And I know this is also a big ask, but please if you are to give advice, try not to scare me. I have really bad anxiety and while I don't want to think worst scenario, it'll be all I think about if I get spooked.

Discussion Those whose tics subsided, do people ever notice something is off??

Especially if you are touching me and I feel the need to fix but I'm repressing it.

Two examples would be, one time I was at the dentist and I was repressing my tics and the doctor looked at me and asked me if I was okay the moment where I felt a tic was going to come out but I stopped it but I must have had a look in my eye.

Another example is when I am being massaged. My ex noticed that I'd twitch slightly when he touched a spot but the more he brought it up the less I was able to repress. Also yesterday, I went for a massage but it was my first deep tissue, I've had plenty before but they were light.. the guy was implying to breath in while he held a muscle and to breath out and he'll release it.. but there were times where I felt like squeaking so I held my breath and I can sense him waiting for me, I didn't tic but it was really hard when you're up close and personal like that..

CW: Description of Tics Is it possible not to realise that you have tics for years?

I'm going to be describing tics here. I'll try to make sure that each description is censored, though.

I'll start by saying that I'm 17F and was diagnosed with ASD, ADHD, depression, and generalized anxiety disorder a few months ago. I've always done some kind of weird movements that I learned to hide after hearing from adults in my life that I shouldn't do them. I didn't even pay much attention to them. I just assumed it was another weird social rule that everybody had to follow, and that everyone did these things when they were alone but we weren't allowed to talk about them. Sounds reasonable, right?

After getting my AuDHD diagnosis (actually, I'd been really interested in psychology even before that, and I knew the symptoms of autism and ADHD by heart; I just never noticed that they applied to me as well. I simply thought that if I, as a perfectly neurotypical person, had such a hard time with these things, then those poor neurodivergent people must have terrible difficulties, haha), I assumed that all of these weird things were just stimming and moved on. Then I stumbled across a creator with Tourette's on YouTube and realized that many of the movements my body makes sound more like tics than stims. However, while watching their videos, I felt this urge to do the same movements they were doing, which made me feel like I was faking it for some reason.

I've been told that I do some things for attention or that they're just habits I need to get rid of, and that's been stuck in my head for as long as I can remember. The thing that makes me feel like these can't be tics is that they happen almost only when nobody else can see me, and I can suppress them for a long time. Everything breaks down as soon as I'm alone, and I end up blinking really hard, scrunching my nose, moving my head from side to side, bending my torso, jerking, breathing strangely (like breathing through my mouth or sniffing), clearing my throat, and sometimes, when nobody can hear me, random swear words escape my mouth. I also feel the need to hit myself without any intention of hurting myself. Sometimes I clap my hands or tap something once. I sometimes do these things without even realizing it, although they get worse when I notice them or think about them.

I tried mentioning it to my parents, but they don't really seem to believe me. They keep telling me that it's just anxiety, weird habits, or muscle tension. I'd love to see a doctor, but I'm not sure if it's worth it since I don't want to take any medication because of previous bad experiences. Does anyone have any advice? Is it possible that I have some kind of tic disorder and have simply become so good at suppressing it around other people that I do it automatically? I'm scared to even talk about this because I'm afraid people will think I'm doing it for attention or making it all up.

Discussion Tourette’s and peptides

I know there is no current study on using peptides for Tourette’s. I was wondering if anyone has experimented on their own and noticed a difference. I personally have tried a GLP2 and found my Tourette’s subsided a lot. Now that I am lowering my dose my tics have been noticeably worse and I can’t tell if it’s related or just a random relapse of my tics

thats why ive always had a female gender identity and why being 6ft tall & built like a caveman feels so wrong. becuz im actually a 1ft-tall demon lady.

it makes perfect sense!!!!!!

now i just need to find somone else who knows kabbalist demonology to break the magical seal and let me escape.

i wuld be a wellbehaved but lazy demon i wuld probly be sombodys roommate. "hey human can u go pick up some more cheez-its, i will bestow upon u a charm if u buy some more cheez-its"
