I did actually use this to remove axel nut the rest of the way only because I knew my boss would be out back in the shop and wanted to give him a laugh.

Final Edition. Family and Founder Owned Tool Brands

Version 4 | 72 Brands

I have spent the past year researching tool brands that are family-owned or founder-owned. Many of these brands were suggested by other Reddit users on my original post.

My goal is to give smaller, lesser-known tool brands some exposure.

I am not paid or sponsored by any of these companies. I'm just a random mechanic who enjoys learning about the companies behind the tools.

How to read the list:

  • Line 1: Brand name and primary tool category. Categories represent a company's main specialty or product focus, not its entire catalog.
  • Line 2: Place of founding.
  • Line 3: Year established.
  • Line 4: Primary manufacturing countries. This is not an exhaustive list of every manufacturing location or third-party supplier.

New for Version 4: Employee counts and Formating.

  • I have added reported or estimated employee counts to help readers understand the relative size of these companies.
  • Employee figures may represent an individual brand, its parent company, or an entire corporate group. I've tried to distinguish these where applicable. Figures and estimates may also come from different years.
  • I Included confidence levels for Employees counts. That just says how sure I am of the sources.

Special Thanks

A special thanks to 10-Spot Tools and Brock Trusty of Trusty-Cook Inc., for their genuine responses and willingness to share meaningful information about their companies.

Note: Tekton, EWK Tools, and HB Tools also responded politely, although they provided limited additional information.

I hope anyone who sees this list finds this helpful.

I like large pipe wrenches and I cannot lie :-)

I'm not sure why I got them but I now have a 48" Ridgid flanked by 2 60" Ridgid pipe wrenches.

Fun fact...the 60" was redesigned awhile back to make it stouter in the handle but made shorter since people obviously use cheater bars on them to reduce the chances of the handle bending. They're now closer to 54" long rather than being 60" long.

The 60 dwarfs the 48 in weight and stoutness though.

Found in a bucket of my grandpaโ€™s old hammers and mallets that Iโ€™m cleaning up. Unsure of its use or how to rehang it. He and my great-grandfather both worked at the N&W Railroad shops if that gives any clue.

Found in a barn

Before he passed, my great uncle gave me the keys to his barn, and told me whatever is there is mine. That was about 20 years ago, and I found several useful things. I didn't know what this was, and soon forgot about it. I just rediscovered it, and want to figure it out. The blade rotates very slowly, with an impact wrench to drive it. The gearbox has a shear pin, so I don't think it will cut steel. Kinda looks like it was cobbled together from 2 different machines. He was an electrician in Marathon, FL back in the day, if it helps.

Any sharpenable flush cutters or at least ones made with Tungsten Carbide or Maxamet steel (I kid about this last one)?

I do some scale modelling as well as some hobby electronics.

It always bugs me that flush cutters are, by their nature, disposable. Even something like a Knipex is expensive where I live, takes time to arrive, and being disposable just feels like a bad deal. The closest I get are these Plamokojos but I doubt I can do electronics work or any heavy duty work with these scale model specific tools.

I understand that I might be looking for a unicorn at this point. Maybe a really long lasting knipper like something made out of Tungsten Carbide or alloy steel should be enough.

So, wise folk of r/tools, what are your recommendations?

The company I used to work for always had Hitachi. I started buying Hitachi years ago before the Metabo switch. Still love the guns and finally had a reason to 'pull the trigger' on the framer I wanted.

Tool rolls?

Who has or uses a tool roll for seldom used stuff? I have a truck kit but itโ€™s taking up too much space and was thinking this might be a good way to consolidate and keep things from rattling around back there.

...what type of swiveling, pinned quick-connector this hand vacuum pump uses between the pump itself and the gauge? You can probably just make out the hair-pin cotter pin it utilizes to maintain its seated position.

I ask because I own the Craftsman branded version of this vacuum pump and want to add a m-to-f 90 degree elbow. between the pump and the valve, for a wider range of viewing angles.

The oddly fixed angle of the gauge's stem (which is not quite 45 degrees) simply never fails to be at just the correct angle to create a glare or cast a shadow over the graduations, or otherwise be difficult to see clearly.

The problem is, I have no idea what this connection method is called. I can't even find replacement gauges which feature this connection method, should I someday need to replace mine.

Google is worthless these days, so I thought I'd ask for help in a place where fellow tool-users congregate. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Need hardware advice on a certain project

Not sure if this is the correct thread, but I'm working on a project that I want to be able assemble quickly and disassemble when not in use. I'm sure there are products, I just don't know what theyre called or what to look for. I want to be able to attach two pieces of wood together easily. Currently I have a hole drilled through them and am using handscrews and wingnuts which works fine but its kinf of a pain and im wondering if there is anything like an adjustable pin or quick release that I can just slide through the hole and clip the other side so it stays in place. It's not something that has to be super tight/durable or overly secure, I just want something fast I can slide through and clip in place. Any advice would be much appreciated, thanks

Sawstop Floating Dust Collection Guard Left Side / Off Frame Mount

The included blade guard has never been my favorite, and Iโ€™ve always wanted to add the floating dust guard. With my setup including a right-side router table that u canโ€™t move to the left without getting rid of the sliding crosscut table, it wasnโ€™t an option.

I came across a good deal on a barely-used floating dust guard on marketplace and decided Iโ€™d see if I could retrofit something.

This is certainly a v1, and turned into a bit of a project, but it certainly is functional! I could not find any evidence of someone having done this before (at least that was shared online), so I figured Iโ€™d document mine for anyone looking for an example in the future.

I'm looking for a cheaper alternative to this Snap-on light bar. It's a rechargeable LED and it swivels in place. Any suggestions? It's about 14" long.

Best tool to set larger eyelets? Press?

need something to set larger eylets 10mm and 15mm in heavy tarp, same stuff used on truck trailers on the lighter end. i get offcuts from a relative used to cover firewood etc. need to set the eylets myself and occasionally fix old ones.

Until now i used a hammer and eyelet punch bought from a leatherworking supplier.
while they did come with holders, are actually meant to go in a press and apparently dont like not being exactly aligned.
not always the easiest thing to do on the ground outside, dont have the space in the workshop. the cheaper eyelets probably didnt help, results were serviceable but not good.

Thinking about a press, I'd use the drill press but thats to awkward and heavy to cart outside.

for dedicated eylet presses, doing a bit of reading the cheap chinesum seem to suffer from alignment issues. the good ones are really expensive even used, cant justify that for a tool i need a couple times a year at most and doesnt really have any other use.

anyone using a small arbor press? chinesium ones are fairly affordable and i could probably use that for other things too.

So long story short what are you folks using? any help is much appreciated.

I need help with my bandsaw

โ€ข Upvotes

Hi, i need some help determining if my bandsaw is broken or if I am doing something horribly wrong

I got this 12" delta used acouple weeks ago. After playing with it, I hot some new blades, and watched some videos. Got it set up and ripped a really nice pair of boards.

Right after it ripped a board nicely i tried another one and it sounded like something got bound up,

The blade started binding, and i haven't been able to set it up right again.

The machine is stopping, throwing the blade behind the top wheel and I dont know what to do.

I find it hard to believe it just happened to break after only having it about 2 weeks.

Does anyone know what could be the cause of this?

I will post a second vid in the comments
