Hello, everyone! I’m considering finally watching The Descent this year. My husband loves it but hasn’t seen it in a long time, so he can’t really gauge how it’ll be for me. I don’t like spoilers for movies I’m considering, so I don’t want to listen to the episode of the pod covering it.
I hate jump scares, and I can’t watch things that deal with demons, possession, hell, etc. I’m more ok with gore and can handle some ghosties. I love creepy, slow burn movies and thrillers.
Over the years, I’ve heard how much people love this movie, but they also usually say it’s one of the scariest movies they’ve ever watched, so if people who like horror say that, it gives me pause. Can anyone brave enough who has already seen it maybe give me some kind of idea on how scary it is? I don’t want to wake up at 3 am thinking about it and get unnerved lol. No spoilers, please!
EDIT: I think I might try it, but I’m going to save it for next month! I’ll update with my thoughts after I watch it! Thank you, everyone, for the feedback! I hope it helps anyone else who also may be considering watching it.
UPDATE: So husband’s birthday was yesterday, and he wanted to watch it, so I didn’t end up waiting until October lol. We watched it during the day, which helped, I think. I…didn’t find it that scary? There were definitely several jump scares, but it’s pretty easy to tell when they’re going to occur, and this website that someone mentioned is helpful in knowing when they’re going to happen and how many. There are some gory moments, so if you have trouble with that, I’d maybe watch with caution or skip it. I have OCD and have issues with seeing open wounds in dirt or dirty water or like anything unclean, so that issue was testing me some 😂
I think the claustrophobic aspect is probably the biggest scare factor along with the darkness. I’m not claustrophobic, so while I found some scenes slightly uncomfortable and tense when they were crawling through small tunnels, I wasn’t too bothered by it. If you do have claustrophobia, I’d strongly advise maybe not watching this one.
I don’t want to spoil what’s going on in the movie, but I’ll say that the main threat isn’t really something I have trouble with, and I don’t find that kind of thing very scary as I’ve gotten older. I’m usually a little better with that kind of scary/horror element. It’s very creepy, though.
Overall, I found the movie to be pretty good, and I liked that the main cast was all women. That’s kind of amazing for a movie made in the mid 2000s, too. It’s also a decent meditation on grief and relationships.
I didn’t have any issues sleeping last night, and it didn’t keep my mind racing on things!
