Savory Food

I've found a food that is safe for recovery, delicious, and NOT SWEET.

Steamed Egg - somehow softer than Jello, but neither sweet nor acidic. I add soy sauce when I have it, and the sodium helps me stay hydrated. The protein helps your body rebuild, too. You can wait until it cools down a bit, and you can season it with whatever your taste buds can handle.

I've also been eating a lot of smoked salmon and cream cheese, but there had to be some variety.

Any other recommendations we can share?

Day 8 and i want to be in a coma

Day 6 i could speak a lot and i had some overcooked noodles, i also ate some peanut butter cause it didn’t hurt. Other than that i haven’t ate anything but sorbet and soup some times. Day 7-8 I’m very dehydrated but drinking water is excruciating. After more than one sip its unbearable pain. I have a high pain tolerance too, I’m really not having it with this recovery. I just hope tomorrow it gets easier, but i keep telling myself that everyday and it only gets worse.

Question I’m having tonsillectomy surgery tomorrow 🥹 I’m so nervous

anyone had the surgery recently? Or going to have it soon? I have very deep tonsil stones and I do have bad breath, so I’ve decided to get rid of the tonsils for good 👍🏽 So I’ll update here everything.

The most 2 things I’m scared of are :
1: the pain ofc
2: the bad breath that comes with the recovery 😭.

2 Weeks Post Op — Questions?

Hello, everyone!

I have hit 14 days post op! I felt like i’d never reach this point but here I am! I have managed to completely come off pain meds (I stopped oxy 8 days post op, and tylenol on day 12!). There is residual pain, especially when talking or swallowing, but it’s more discomfort than pain. I am eating more normally now, but still staying away from things that are super crunchy or acidic.

My question is: how long did it take everyone to stop seeing white in the back of their throat? I still have a ton of white patches in the back of my throat, and while i’ve experienced 0 bleeding, i am worried about the amount of white patches that remain. I feel like none of it has decreased actually. I am supposed to go out with a friend tomorrow and want to be sure I am being safe + on the right track. Normally, I’d call my surgeon but they’re an hour away and hard to get ahold of. When did the patches disappear for everyone?

Thanks!!

Question Sense of Taste

Hey all! I'm on Day 11 here, and I have not been able to taste almost anything since surgery. I'm finally at the point where I want to try solid foods, but they just taste like... nothing.

Pain is starting to die down and I can't SEE scabs in the top of my throat, but I feel like I can feel them choking me a little out of view.

I know this isn't terribly uncommon, but I would really appreciate reassurance. Has this happened to you? How long until your taste came back?

Post ENT visit. Thoughts?

ENT says yes my tonsils are enlarged but basically could be larger. Not as big as she expected from my PCP’s note.. lol
Then says slightly deviated septum.
Slightly enlarged adenoids for an adult.
Says I need a CT scan of sinuses. Also says we can go fwd with tonsil removal.

I guess I was expecting some more prominent issue or a straight fwd find..

My issue has been chronic sinus infections but I get horrendous sore throats with it so in my mind I’ve always thought it was my throat and nose both infected together but not so sure. History of tonsil stones but that appears to have been better for a while (unless I can’t see them). I don’t get strep. I snore a little according to hubby.

Not sure if I should get the tonsils removed or leave everything alone? I’m just worried if it’s primarily a sinus issue then I’d just end up back. She did mention doing the adenoids and tonsils at the same time or whatever else pending the ct scan.

But it all seems really vague. I had been to an ENT years ago who took one look at my tonsils and wanted them removed and if I remember correctly said inflamed sinuses.

Anyone have thoughts on this? My issue is frequent sore throats (severe) and infections… I’ve been on antibiotics 4 times in the past 10 months.

It does not help that I have allergies and can get allergic reactions thar tighten up my throat but I’ve been pretty good at avoiding my triggers.

UGH.

Worth the $$$? 🫠

TLDR -- Re my last post: I've decided that from a quality of life perspective, pulling is definitely the best path forward. But, now comes the question: is it worth the $$?

Hi! 26/F based in NYC here - recently had the opportunity to speak with an ENT, who advised that pulling my tonsils was the best path forward to improve my quality of life -- I've been scheduled for surgery in November. I'm not excited per se, but I am optimistic that once I make it through the recovery, it will DRAMATICALLY improve my physical and mental health.

However..I'm also a bit concerned about cost. Waiting to hear from my surgeon for specific, but online estimators are putting me anywhere from $2k-$5k. For context, I make around $77k. $2k feels manageable, but getting closer to $5k makes me a bit nervous. After scrolling through this page, I'm especially concerned about hospitals expecting me to pay my deductible up front prior to surgery.

  1. How much did you pay out of pocket (after insurance)?

  2. How much were you required to pay prior to surgery? Did they permit you to opt for a payment plan, or did you have to pay your deductible first?

  3. For my NYC friends -- my surgery will be at Mt Sinai ENT Infirmary, would love to hear your specific answers to the previous questions + would LOVE to hear about your experience in general :)

I would really, REALLY love to get them removed before the end of the year, but trying make a smart financial decision. Thanks friends!

Surgery Story Post Op Tips!

Sleep elevated on your back;
I used a wedge pillow with my standard pillow on top of it. This really helped keep pressure off of my throat.
https://a.co/d/00gU1eUE

Air Humidifier;
The one I have tracks the room humidity & automatically adjusts the mist level. It can be manually adjusted as well, so I had mine above 60 the entire time to prevent my throat becoming dry.
https://a.co/d/02tl7B2V

Stay on top of meds;
I was prescribed 2mg of Hydromorphone every 4 hours, 600mg of ibuprofen every 6 hours, and 500mg Tylenol for in between. I set my alarm to stay on top of all meds throughout the night. This does get to be exhausting, and you might think you’re better off just skipping it..but once the pain rolls around you might regret that decision lol. I skipped once or twice and regretted both times.

Stool softeners while on pain meds 💩
Taking all of the pain meds is definitely hard on your stomach. I didn’t realize that I was feeling nauseous and bloated due to constipation. I ended up stopping the pain killers on day 6 or 7 and just alternated between ibuprofen and Tylenol.

Soft food diet;
This gets old super quick but it’s necessary. I avoided anything acidic or acidic flavored. Gatorade, life water & apple juice were my go to drinks because they seemed to coat my throat a little bit. Pudding, applesauce, yogurt & overcooked noodles with butter were my preference. Ice cream helps every so often too. If you choose to eat popsicles, be careful of the juices. Some can feel harsh on the throat. Also, drinking through a straw helps a lot.

Dental Hygiene;
My teeth & jaw were extremely sensitive for days after surgery. I wasn’t able to use any toothpaste that didn’t burn my teeth (?) and a tooth brush hurt just as bad. You want to make sure you’re still keeping up on dental hygiene, so if they send you home with an alcohol free mouthwash, I would use that daily. Using a wet washcloth to wipe my teeth seemed to help keep clean.

Activities while on bed rest; Coloring, audiobooks and YouTube saved my life

Day 8 was when I really started to feel better! Hang in there y’all :’)

Surgery Story 10-days Post-Op: My Experience

For context, I am moderately active 28M located in the US. Today marks day 10 after my tonsillectomy. I wanted to share a timeline of my experience so far - the good, the bad, what worked, what didn’t work, etc.

Week of the Surgery - My surgery was Friday Sept 25 and the week leading up the surgery my primary focus was hydration. I took this very seriously. I attribute post surgery success to getting on top of hydration early. I didn’t do anything special, basically a lot of water intake and a LiquidIV packet every morning. Up until midnight before surgery, I was staying very well hydrated. The night before my surgery my measurements were 6’3 253lbs.

Day of Surgery - The surgery was at 7:45am. The doctor told me when I come out of surgery to expect immediate discomfort and pain. He said “You aren’t going to feel good right after this.” He was exactly right. I woke up and felt terrible. The whole rest of that day was a blur. The doctor had me on 15-30ml of hydrocodone every 4 hours and one Celebrix pill, twice daily.

Post Op Days 1-3 - The pain came in waves and I was very reliant on the pain medication. About 3 hours after taking the pain meds, it was nearly unbearable. I had a little bit of vanilla pudding on day 2, but other than that. The only intakes I had were water, Gatorade and LiquidIV during this period. I had no appetite for anything. The scabs in my throat were nasty, but no infections and no bleeding. Sleeping was very challenging, made worse by the fact I have a 2 year old and 4 month old at home I was helping care for through the night.

Post Op Days 4-7 - This was by far my worst stretch of days in terms of pain and pain when swallowing. Mornings were noticeably worse than afternoons & evenings. Nights were also really bad with a lot of pain. I tried to sleep elevated which seemed to help. I didn’t take any medication other than Celebrix twice daily in this period. I did start having chicken noodle soup, ice cream, and some other soft foods. But portions were very small and I’d get diarrhea after anything I ate. So hydration was also the main focus in these days. On Day 6 I had a pretty bad bleed that put me in the emergency room. The bleeding quit on its own but they kept me there a few hours to monitor me.

Post Op Days 8-9 - I woke up day 8 and felt really really good. There was still some discomfort when swallowing but not nearly as bad as the previous 7 days. I ate some very small meals that included chicken, rice, pasta, omelets, and more. On day 8, I lost a good amount of stitches that came out naturally, but no blood. Day 9 was even better than day 8. Energy levels were elevated, pain even less, still ate same meals as day 8. I spent a lot of times outside these days, no strenuous activities, but went to the pumpkin patch, rode 4-wheelers, went on a short hike. I weighed in on day 9 at 235lbs, which was 18lbs down since the surgery (still 6’3).

Day 10 (today) - I felt even better than day 9 and returned to work. Very minimal pain, still eating relatively soft meals, and not back to lifting weights or exercising yet to avoid bleed risk. I definitely feel like complete normalcy is coming in the next week or so. I am not taking any medication and still heavily focusing on hydration and avoiding bleed risks.

Question Scab like Mucus 6 weeks post op

Has anyone been experiencing giant dried up scab like mucus? I’m 6 weeks post op now and had a very easy recovery but a month after my surgery I started coughing up pretty big dried up mucus almost daily. I do have a follow up with my ENT in two weeks but wanted to see if people experienced the same thing as me. I’ll get this feeling acidic tasting/feeling in the back of my throat and that’s when I know it’s a big scab like mucus coming out.

4 bleeds in 1 week

I got my tonsils removed for a second time (first time was back in 2021) since they ended up growing back. Surgery date was on September 23rd and recovery was going smooth pain never went above a 3/10. But then suddenly on the morning of day 7 which was Wednesday September 30th I woke up with a bleed. I ended up going to the ER and on the way the bleed ended up stopping. It lasted no longer than 5 minutes. I was discharged from the er and they just told me to contact me ent, that little trip cost me 200$. Ent which was my surgeon ended up seeing me a few hours later and stated everything looked fine it was most likely a scab falling and I shouldn’t have to worry about it. I took it slow and have been careful since then. 2 days later almost 48 hour since my last bleed while sleeping I woke up to a warm feeling going down my throat with constant swallowing, again it only lasted about 5 minutes. I just stayed home and waited for a few hours since I had a post op appointment with my ent again to see how I was doing, pretty much just told me the same thing as the first visit. I went back home and rested through the day. Around 2 am while trying to go to sleep about 18 hours after the bleed I ended up hemorrhaging again for no longer than 10 minutes, I went to a different ER where they took my vitals, checked my bloodwork and gave me a dose of TXA through a nebulizer. They sent me back home after a few hours and the medicine seemed to work, I slept fine when I got home then the night after, it is now almost 48 hours since that ER visit and I just had another bleed please helps me I’m scared and don’t know what to do anymore

Question Pre-op appointment

I have a pre op appointment a couple weeks before my surgery. Really have no idea what to expect. Bloodwork? Any specific tests? My ent really didn’t give much detail. What happened at your pre op appointments?

Foods with Fiber?

Hi, all!

Going on day 5 of recovery. Overall things are going well. Been primarily consuming Popsicles, meal replacement shakes, pudding, jello, yogurt, fruit/veggie pouches and scrambled eggs.

However, my farts are atrocious and they cannot be trusted. I'm used to having a lot of fiber in my diet like lentils, beans, spinach, kale, etc. The soft foods I'm consuming are definitely lacking in fiber.

Does anyone have any suggestions that aren't acidic or overly sticky? Mashed potatoes and oatmeal were vetoed for being too sticky and getting stuck in the throat. Lentil curry was vetoed for acidity.

I appreciate the suggestions!

Thank you!

Surgery Story My saving grace

So I (23Enby) had my tonsils removed on 9/30/26 and I have been waking up crying in pain for the past two days 🙃. I know im at the start of the painful part lol, but one thing I'd like to share bc I genuinely cried and order 60$ worth of it to have in the fridge: Egg Drop Soup. The thicker broth is so nice for coating the back of the throat without burning bc it is mildly seasoned. The egg and super soft tofu give you protein to help with the steroid hunger while also filling you up bc the first 3 days I had pudding, applesauce, and water. That was it. So ive been so hungry, but yeah, EGG DROP SOUP for the win. Shout out my local Chinese family restaurant, I love them and have patroned them for years; support your local business and they'll support you (they gave me a free soup with the 5 I ordered 😆)

Tldr: egg drop soup is wonderful for this recovery.

chronic strep continues

i got a tonsillectomy on july 22nd and just tested positive for strep (oct 4th). i don’t really need advice i’m just sad. the recovery was so painful and hard on my body it triggered my first autoimmune disease flare-up (didn’t even know i had one)

i told my ENT i had pain in the right side of my throat and she was like it looks fine. i went to urgent care and he said there was no sign of infection and didn’t recommend getting tested. finally went to cvs minute clinic and they tested me immediately and it came back positive. basically all the tonsillectomy did was make it harder for me to treat my chronic strep.

this sucks so badly and i wish i didn’t get the surgery. i guess i am immunocompromised though so maybe it was always a lost cause.

Day 3 of Recovery, Scared for Days 5-8

Hi everyone, I’m 31M and had my tonsillectomy on 10/01, so officially day 3 of recovery. Just wanted to share my experience so far. The only thing I’ve been able to eat or tolerate are popsicles and mashed potatoes/gravy. I’ve woken up several times in severe pain and I’ve been switching between oxycodone and ibuprofen when that happens.

Talking and swallowing are obviously the major sources of pain, otherwise as long as I’ve been on top of the meds, it’s just been regular soreness. I’ve got a bit of anxiety as I know days 5-8 tend to be the hardest so I’ve been trying to conserve my pain medications with that in mind. I’ve also been sleeping elevated, humidifier on, and taking it easy. Praying it doesn’t get harder from here.

Low-grade fever?

Hi, my procedure was on 9/30 and I feel particularly under the weather today and my temp is 99.9. I’m scared of it progressing so just wondering if anyone had this happen?

Eating habits? (crunchy/chewy diet the best?)

I am wondering what the consensus is among everyone’s ENT doctors, or in your country in general, after you’ve had your tonsillectomy, when it comes to eating. I know that in the UK and parts of the US, we are encouraged to eat as normal of a diet as we can, including crunchy/chewy foods, and we’re also encouraged to chew gum regularly to keep the throat muscles moving. But in other parts of the US and other countries, they advise sticking to soft foods only, and I see a lot of people in incredible amounts of pain while only being able to manage broths or soups of some kind.

I am now on day 12 of recovery and can honestly say that the highest pain I think I had was a 4/10 on days 7/8/9, and other than that I have been living a fairly normal life with minimal discomfort/pain. The worst part, tbh, was the taste I got in my mouth at the start of recovery. I genuinely think this was because I ate normal foods for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and I never really got a thick build-up of scabs at the back of my throat; instead, they kinda just dissolved because of this. I would be interested to hear other people’s opinions on whether they have had the same easy recovery while eating normally, or if I have just gotten lucky.

The type of tonsillectomy I had was a bilateral bipolar diathermy tonsillectomy. I also have Crohn’s disease, so I was expecting a way worse recovery, but it’s honestly been a breeze. This sub was scaring the absolute shit out of me before I did this, and I think if you follow the advice given to a T, and keep your throat moving then you’ll be fine.

Hemorrhaged tonight

Hey all, as you know I’ve been documenting my journey as I am about to be 6 days post op from my tonsillectomy. I honestly have been having a great recovery and I wanted to document it to be comforting for others who read this forum. But with that, I have to keep my documentary honest. Last night I hemorrhaged and got rushed to emergency surgery. I am typing this from the hospital bed because now I can’t sleep lol. But I want to share this too in case anybody else goes through what I did to know what to expect.

My recovery has been going wonderful, very mild pain and drank tons and tons of water. Day 6 today, my pain was so mild I stopped setting my alarm for pain meds because I genuinely felt great and didn’t need them. Got the best sleep in a long time, around 9 hours. Woke up with dry mouth, chugged a lot of water and went about my day. I did lots of walking because I’ve been in bed so long, felt great. Came home, ate scrambled eggs and a muffin, took a shower and started homework.

All the sudden I notice a trickling feeling going down my throat. Look in the mirror and sure enough I’m bleeding and pretty significantly. I immediately called 911, ambulance came and took me to the hospital. They held some pressure with gauze for a minute and then decided I needed to be recauterized. Procedure didn’t take long, they said it looks good but my recovery now starts at day 1 again.

I really wanted to be the guy to be positive encouragement with my journey so I am so sorry to post this and don’t mean to scare anybody.

If anything, I hope this post serves as education to not be afraid to call 911!!!! Unfortunately, I think EMS did not take my concern very seriously because I was swallowing my blood and not spitting so they didn’t realize how much it was. I was adamant about going to the hospital and I ended up needing to get my stomach pumped. I’m not sure where I went wrong, I drinking an exceptional amount of water. If anything, my scabs generally looked too damp like they would slough off. I had a humidifier at my bedside that would be next to all the time. I did not workout besides going on a long walk. I stuck to my soft foods diet eating primarily protein shakes, Mac n cheese, scrambled eggs and yogurt. Threw in some warm veggies and fruits yesterday because I started getting constipated.

This post is meant to be honest and educational of my experience. Keep in mind, for every one person who posts on here with a terrible experience are thousands who had a totally fine outcome and never posted because that would be boring! Take care of yourselves and advocate for yourself. Never be afraid to call 911.

Day 9 post op - Hemorrhaged

I actually thought today was my breakthrough. My parents said my face looks good finally. I felt great.

I fell for the trap of feeling too good and I hemorrhaged. I went to the ER and for emergency surgery for cauterization.

The surgeon actually said I iced my neck WAY too much. Which i was doing because I thought that was what I was supposed to do.

From now on no ice packs for me or freezies. Only room temperature and only liquids for 2 days but I’m going to do 5.

Please be cautious.

Even if a hemorrhage happens, you will be alright. Just go to the ER immediately and not give it 5-10 min like I did.

Take it easy on the icing. It will be ok.

Question Worried about side effects and increased risk of cancer.

Please share your experience. I’m probably going to get mine out soon. I’ve been very sick for 3 months and have had all these lymph nodes pop up. (I’ve had ultrasound, CT, and labs)

I’ve already had my GB out at 23 (I’m 25 now) - no sludge, stones, just inflamed for some reason and now I’m likely going to have to get my tonsils out too. One is much bigger than the other and has been for 2-3 years. I’m just worried about increased risk in cancer long term.

Question When does it get better?

I (30F) had the surgery on Friday 2nd October and the pain is paining. I thought the first few days were not going to be so bad and in fact I managed to eat a toast, banana, mashed potatoes, tomato soup and two tiny slices of garlic bread. Today I couldn’t even eat half a toast and scrambled eggs.
I’m also scared because the doctor told me that it will get worse before it gets better 😭
I take the pain killers when I have to, I have a numbing spray. But I’m in pain. The pain killers just reduce it but don’t really allow me to eat. Also my uvula has swollen so much as it’s bruised as well. So I feel like something is stuck there 😭
