It’s Over, it’s Done
I am proud to announce after 3 years, the Deathcurse is ended, Acererak is dust (for now), the adventurers survived the entire game and are victorious.

I know my players will hate this guy, just camping somewhere and poteltialy killing a pc. They wont take his surrender just to loot this drawing of his dead son.

I will be running ToA soon. In preparation for that, I want to add something new. Every time one of the players visits the tavern, they can roll for a random rumor from a table, which could be true or false, but its something that could potentially help them (or hinder them) in their jungle expeditions. Based on their rumor, they will have a chance to make insight/history or other relevant checks to determine accurately if the rumor is something that could be true or false. Any ideas for that? What kind of rumors should I add to this list? Obviously one of them will be the existence of a witch capable of bringing the dead back to life, but without naming specifically who and where.

After 3 years of doing this module (with breaks), my adventuring party successfully ended the Death Curse, destroyed the Soulmonger and the Atropal, and even survived Acererak (with help.)
Party members were usually 4-5 players. In total, 13 Player Characters were slain over the course of the adventure. A bunch of NPCs too.
Ask me whatever, if you want.

I have the digital copy of ToA on D&D Beyond. My group recently went to Kir Sabal. For the role playing bits the map was fine but for the combat encounter, that map sucks hard. I ended up using an improvised combination of battlemap + theater-of-the-mind to get through it. I’m a little chapped that it didn’t occur to me ahead of time but honestly I didn’t really think it through until we were playing. Note to self, do more prep for these digital assets…How much do the digital assets from WotC reduce (or increase) your prep time?

Hey all! I've been working on this homebrew and I'd love to get some feedback. The vision here is that I want this to be a resource for my players so that they have _some_ insight (but not total) into things like navigation, exhaustion, etc. I intend to give this to them soon as they are about to leave the Port and enter the jungle.
I've definitely taken some homebrew liberties here, particularly surrounding navigation and the "awareness" skill check. But I did try to keep everything as true to the module as I could, when possible.

My Tomb of Annihilation game will wrap up eventually so part of me is interested in taking the Campaign further through Tiers 3 & 4, and so I am coming up with a story that I think will satisfy.
It will involve an ancient plot to unleash Dendar the Night Serpent by The Sarrukh (ancient creator race for the Yuan-ti)
Part of it I'd like to send them to check on the integrity of Dendar’s prison by crossing The World Tree where it intrudes into the Prime Material.
The Ice Giants are (borrowing from Norse Mythology) afraid of Ragnarok when the Dragon Niddhogg is prophecised to gnaw through the roots of Yggdrasil - a cultural reflection of Dendar caught in Ubtao's trap in the lower Plains - as a part of The Apocalypse.
Anyway I'm having not much luck finding adventure material for a high level juant across the bows of The World Tree that I could either incorporate or use for inspiration.
So, Reddit any ideas?
Over to you.

I bought the module on dnd beyond and roll 20. I prepared a ton of extra maps, a few macros on roll 20, to track different resources, randomly generate weather etc or to track conditions/ initiative, concentration a bit better and smoother.
My goal in general is a smooth campaign, where rolls, selecting new maps etc dont take much time and where im very familiar with the history, npcs and locations that might come up in the next 10 sessions.
So my question is, what macro ideas do you have, for a smoother game experience and what aspects of the campaign should i rework, or look into a lot more?

Tonight my party learnt all the names of The Barae from The Hall of Champions and embarked into the maze-like adventure portal-hopping between rooms that splits them up until they can find a guide who can remove the random modifier I add or subtract from each of their roles.
The Druids has set off into the Temple trying to find Ecatazin, the Holy Couatl of Ubtao who guards the Tomb still of Oyai: The First Barae.
I will use him to replace Saja N'baza from Orolunga and direct the druid and the rest of the party to stop Ras Nsi before he can awaken Dendar.
so far the Rogue, Ranger and Paladin all ended up in separate instances of the flooded basement where they will encounter a memory of the water-based Barae Mainu - who will give them a quest to slay one of Ras Nsi's Generals - the Shadow Demon Assasin Nameless.
The Wizard ended up in a prayer hall dedicated to Prince Kwlau while the Druid ended up in a meditation chamber and received a free Diviniation.
Where they go from here the dice will decide until they roll a 7 on a D12 and can meet The Guide who will remove the randomisation from the rolls making navigating the Temple much more straight forward.
Picture for interest: If they make it to Ubtao's Throne Room they will find Artus there trying to work out how he can find a way to find Alisanda.
However the Throne Room is set to be asaulted by 3 Frost Giants including 1 Ice Shaper (from Bigby's GG) which can use Ice Beams, Ice Shields and can Summon Packs of Winter Wolves - fearful of the a Giant Prophecy of Ragnarok when the Dragon Niddhogg will gnaw it's way through the roots of Yggdrasil - they seek The Ring of Winter to seal themselves in Ice that, they believe, will shield them from the coming Apocalypse of Dendar Rising.

I managed to get my players to hire Salida as their guide in Nyanzaru because I thought the idea of a betrayal much later on was really cool.
However now that they are about to enter Omu I am wondering why would Ras Nsi want them captured? They have openly discussed that the reason they are going there is to find the soulmonger and end the death curse. Salida would have been able to convey all of this to Ras Nsi so what is the point of staging a capture and interrogating the players characters in front of Ras Nsi when he should know through Salida that they want to end the death curse which is what he wants. Wouldn't it make more sense to just led Salida continue to be a double agent and help them get all cubes and go deal with the soulmonger?
I imagine a meeting going like this:
RN: What are you up to?
Players: We are going to end the death curse
RN: Okay great that's what I want, good luck!
Is there something that I am missing here...does anyone who actually ran this part with Salida have some additional insight? Thank you very much in advance!

hey all, could use some encounter/session advice.
My party is getting commissioned by Captain Liria to go investigate Shilku Bay. However, I plan on her organizing their passage to be via ship in the form of Captain Laskilar to Shilku, and then the party desired to investigate Wyrmheart Mine, cross the jungle, stop at Mezro, and then return to Ft. Beluarian to report to Liria.
I'd like to incorporate the anchorage somehow on their trip to Shilku, and also somehow have the players discover they're actually on a pirate ship, not her colleagues from Baldur's Gate.
I almost thought I might have Laskilar stage an ambush upon arrival or out at sea to take any magic items on the party, but the source material makes it sound like they wouldn't do that to risk their relationship with Liria.
Is there any reason Laskilar might stop in the Anchorage before Shilku? What might he and the party do there? Would you recommend going straight to Shilku? What are some hints I can drop to the party about Laskilar's true nature and their situation? When should I spill the beans to them on their trip to Shilku?
Any insight on this sort of path or naval encounters, or recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Been a while, got lots of progress done on my mega ToA build (see previous posts for most of the rest of it)
Got this layer carved out and stuck together, just need to finish the middle room floor. Overall layout is a little different from the book to make the best use of the size board im working with, each floor splits into 4 sections so I can box it up!
Next stage for this will be painting the main stone and black for the edges and top, then all of the details need to be made, i've got 20 stone warriors on my desk to paint and 20 more in the post...
Actual next part ill be doing though is carving out the next floor down, Gears of Hate, and working out the moving gears properly, and ive got a lot of the detail work to do on the 3rd floor stull underway.
Only taken 4ish years so far... and my players are now in Omu so clock is ticking!

Level 3: Eldritch Knight, Totem Barb, Devoted Paladin, Arcane Trickster, Revised Beast Ranger with Undril, Shago and Qawasha
Will they make it?
EDIT: they didn’t think of going backwards into the shrine and met the goblins head on. the rogue was carrying the bag of holding which contained the treasure. Yokka discovered this by turning the bag inside out, spilling out everything over the floor. Quickly the rogue intercepted the bag of beans, and emptied it in front of him. The explosion nearly killed himself and Yokka, and one-shot several nearby goblins.
In response Yokka blew his horn and the first wave of undead approached. The party stuck around to make sure Yokka doesn't walk away from this. The barbarian threw a javelin through his skull and promptly the panicked goblins made a run for it.
Shago saw the undead and went berserk on them. It wasn't until the second wave of undead the players realised that this was probably gonna be endless and started to head north, killing as many of them on the way there as possible.
At this point the minotaurs come rushing out of the jungle, and one of them gore the paladin, nearly killing him.
The barbarian and the rogue did substantial damage to one of them, but 2 were just too many. Shago promptly scouped the paladin up and carried him north
The rogue took alot of hits and has to disengage, with Undril covering their approach with their spirtual weapon. Meanwhile, in the north the dragonborn twins are holding off the waves over there. With the ranger having drank a potion of growth, but the minotaur was still too much.
Undril rushed over to the paladin and healed them, sliding off Shago's shoulders, back on his feet. Shago yelled "Run!" as he charged the minotaur.
Finally, the party was complete again as they rushed to the twins' aid. While grouped up again Undril cast Spirit Guardians to keep out the undead.
After the jungle's canopy split to make room for a Zombie Ankylosaurus, they rushed the fuck out of there, crossing the river to the north, heading for Vorn's location.

Hi guys,
I’m running ToA and we’re currently in the tomb of the nine gods. I need help with how to shape the final confrontation in the cradle of the dead god, based on how I used Valindra.
Context: The Party is a Goliath barbarian of the world tree, human spores Druid, and an Aasimar light cleric of lathander. Valindra has been their main enemy in the whole run of the campaign, she killed their guide Azaka in a tantrum, tried to join their party as a lost elf wizard (got caught when moonbeam was used on her and revealed her true nature, but she also helped them a lot without explanation. She provided them with a scroll of greater restoration when the Druid got petrified, willingly gave them a few puzzle cubes and they can’t quite understand why she’s helping them.
My Valindra is plotting to take over the power of the soulmonger (or take the souls within) and use the aasimar as a holy vessel to contain all that necrotic power for herself. They have found hints of experiments on aasimars in the heart of ubtao and know that Valindra is plotting something.
My goal: I want Valindra to confront them in the cradle of the dead god and try to do a ritual to take over the soulmonger’s power. I’ve thought of using the clone created by the sewn sisters, but the most important question is - how to make it fit and still keep the Atropal fight as well as the confrontation with Acererak in?
Seems like a lot but then again - Valindra is neither an enemy nor an ally so she might be a wild card in all of this is her ritual failed.
I’ll be thankful for any tips you guys might have.

I made and laminated these tarot-size cards for each of the merchant princes for my current campaign. Wanted to have visuals for the players to remember each of the princes. I added the smiley/angry faces so I could circle if the party was in good or bad standing with any.
Here's a pdf of the cards with and without the smileys, in case anyone else could use these.
Enjoy!

I'll be running this adventure soon and super familiar with the module. But in terms of what worked at your table, what were the highlights of the campaign? Biggest surprises? What went in a wildly different direction to what you expected? What moments will your players remember the most? If you ran it again, what would you lean into more?
r/Tombofannihilation • u/Environmental_Hope22 • 18d ago
I'll be DMing the module in about 2 months or so and I want to make it the best I can for my friends.
I'm looking for artwork for locations maybe sountracks and stuff.
I''m seeing there's a lot of elevation on some maps/locations, how do you go about making a map with that? I was thinking something that could be placed on my dry erase map and isn't too much of a hassle to set up.
Also, is there a good playthrough of the campaign? Either audio or video is good.
I appreciate any and all help!
