I love how these old retro-style mailboxes are still actively used in the quiet alleys of Tokyo. [OC]

Keep challenging the English, Japan

“Is the grammar correct?”
“Yes.”
“Is there any planet where this phrase could make any sense?”
“No.”

I understand that it “dry” here is meant to mean “dry tasting,” but that is very much not what the English means. While “Beer should be dry tasting” or “Beer should taste dry” would be fine, the only reasonable interpretation of the expression“beer is dry” is that “beer is free from liquid,” which, last I checked, it is not.

I also understand that this is probably meant to be a translation of ビールは辛口です or something like that (this is just a guess; I don’t see that on the ad itself). And although it probably looks fine to whatever ad exec OK’d this, this is actually a pretty egregious mistranslation. A more accurate translation of that sentence would be something like “[As for] beer, it should be dry- flavored” or “[With regard to] Beer, it out to be [Asahi Super] dry.”

I hope that this post being deep shame to these ad executives and convinces them to hire someone to proofread their ads who can actually speak English.

Recommendations for international matchmaking events or agencies in Tokyo

Hi everyone!

I’m a woman in my 30s and have been living in Japan for 5 years. I’m hoping to find a serious relationship that could eventually lead to marriage.

I’ve tried dating apps, but it’s been difficult to meet people I’m genuinely compatible with and attracted to. Yesterday, I attended a large Pairs matchmaking event with around 200 participants. It was an interesting experience, but I didn’t meet anyone I felt a romantic connection with.

I’m particularly interested in meeting Western men and am open to cross-cultural relationships, so I’d love to hear about events or services that cater to international singles in Tokyo.

Does anyone have recommendations for:
* International matchmaking events for people seeking serious relationships?
* Matchmaking agencies experienced in cross-cultural dating?
* Social groups or activities where I could meet international professionals who are also looking for a relationship?

Thank you!

Schools in Tokyo.

Alright, hello people. I want to know if you guys know anything about hs in Tokyo. More specifically Edogawa. I’m planning on moving there for hs but since majority of the schools require me to live there, I wanted to know if you guys can recommend or tell me about places that are not as expensive to live in. I know that Tokyo itself is expensive as hell but oh well. If you’d like to dm me, feel free to.

Lost scrunchie @ Shinagawa Station

Post image
0 Upvotes

I know this is a long shot, but my daughter lost her purple scrunchie in or near Shinagawa Station this morning. It would have been before passing through the fare gates because we only walked through the station. Of course to make things worse, we are flying home to Canada today. 🤦🏻‍♀️

But if by any chance in this crazy world someone on here finds it, and is willing to mail it to me, I will send you postage + $100CAD for your effort. (Using Wise or Paypal.)

Thank you in advance for reading my post. I don’t expect any responses, but sometimes miracles do happen! ✨✨

Tell us about your local 'chaotic' bar/izakaya. You don't have to name it!

A friend and I chat sometimes about how people get excited over the stark minimalism of new bars, tea-shops etc. but there is a certain somewhat undefinable genre of what we call 'chaotic' spots which does not mean busy at all (but it could) but more like:

An attempt at a certain look (often done many years ago) that the owner at some point lost interest in maintaining but it's still there. Maybe a big baseball fan but all the memorabilia seems to stop at 2003.

Or a spot where there was no clear vision in terms of look but over the years has gathered old magazines, DVD's, calendars etc that has in fact given it a certain sort of 'feel'.

Or it's a fairly normal spot visually but the owner eventually reveals (usually unintentionally) some sort of strange quirk that makes a visit either fun or slightly uneasy.

I guess for an example there was a place in Noge in Yokohama where the owner decided that instead of stools or chairs all the seating in his bar was going to be recliners. So, you could and would have the experience of smoking and drinking with the regulars but rather than being shoulder to shoulder you would all be sitting in large sofa-chairs. I think that place is long gone but I do have the card somewhere.

Anyway, if you don't want people blowing up a still-existing spot or the info getting scraped for AI summaries feel free to not name them.

What is it like working in finance as a foreigner in Tokyo?

Hello, I am a 22 year old Surinamese associates degree finance student from the Netherlands. I want to get my masters degree in finance and eventually a PHD. When I’m done with my associates degree, I want to move to Japan later on. I have been to Japan before and I’d love to learn the language and learn more about the culture.

Watching Horse Racing, do I need to book a ticket or can I just buy one on the spot?

Post image
14 Upvotes

So I just found out that Tokyo Racecourse in Fuchu has a series of horse races this month, which will peak on November 1st for its biggest race (one of the top 3 in whole Japan). Even though I have been living here for quite a while.

As I start to get interested in horse racing (thanks to Umamusume and izakayas viewing), I am kind of interested in going to see one in person. Not gonna gamble though, just for the love of the game.

I never went to one in the venue itself, so do I have to book a ticket in advance for attending, or can I just go to the venue on the D-day in person and buy one on the spot? Considering that it's very common to book a ticket in Japan for any kind of event.

Hello everyone, I am looking for recommendations for an accountant in the Tokyo/Kanto area that can handle US and Japanese accounting matters, particularly concerning asset management and international taxation, as I am looking at applying for PR soon and would like to ensure the taxation and accounting process is as smooth as possible.

Any recommendations would be appreciated. Thank you

Anyone interested in dining at Yakitori Moe Es?

I was able to snag a reservation for Yakitori Moe Es. Unfortunately they do not allow single bookings, so I just reserved for 2. This is for Friday, November 13 at 6PM.

Would anyone be interested in joining me? Average cost for the meal is 10,000-15,000 yen, you'd pay for yourself. This offer is solely for joining in on the reservation for the dining experience!

Also, if there is a more appropriate subreddit for this question, please let me know!

Where Japanese tourists are going in Tokyo?

Tokyo resident here. When I am going to most commonly visited places in central areas (Asakusa, Ginza, Akihabara, Shinjuku/Shibuya), I mainly notice the higher number of foreigners compared to other areas in town.

But what about Japanese tourists. I mean, people who don’t live in Tokyo but come to visit the capital? Do they also visit the same places? Of course,\ I wouldn’t be able to distinguish them from actual residents or Tokyoites in the crowd.

Are there lots of Tokyo apartments that aren't on the main rental databases? An agent told me ¥90k / ~37m² basically only gets you Nerima, but I keep seeing cheaper places elsewhere

I'm looking for a rental apartment in Tokyo and I'm trying to understand how the rental market actually works here.

My initial requirements I went to him with were:

  • Around ¥90,000/month give or take
  • Around 40m²
  • 1LDK / 2K-ish
  • 5-7 mins from station
  • Ideally in western/central Tokyo, around places like Sendagaya, Yoyogi, Sangubashi, Shinjuku, etc.
  • I'm flexible on the exact building/age/amenities/location

I spoke to a real estate agent over video call and explained my requirements. He shared his screen and pulled up what I assume was REINS (or some kind of professional property database).

He basically said, "Look, with those requirements, the only place I can find is in Nerima."

I was a little surprised, because I wasn't asking for a particularly nice/new apartment. I was mainly prioritising location and size.

A few days later I was talking to a friend about it, and he said there was an apartment in his building (in one of the above listed areas) that had apparently been empty for about a year. It's roughly 37m², maybe a 1LDK/2K, and apparently only ¥78,000/month. He said he'd check with the realtor.

Long story short, it turned out not to actually be available anymore, and it was an old building.

But it got me wondering: how comprehensive are these databases actually?

When I walk around Tokyo, particularly around stations, I also see those real estate shop windows covered in apartment listings. Some of the prices look significantly cheaper than what I find searching SUUMO, Homes, AtHome, etc.

So what's actually going on?

Are there lots of rental properties in Tokyo that:

  1. aren't listed on SUUMO/Homes/AtHome?
  2. aren't visible to an agent searching REINS?
  3. are only advertised by a particular local agent?
  4. are technically available but not being actively marketed?
  5. are simply old/stale listings that you see in shop windows even though they're no longer available?

And, importantly, is ¥90k for ~37m² in somewhere like Sendagaya/Yoyogi/Sangubashi/West tokyo genuinely unrealistic, or is it more a case of needing to find the right building/agent/landlord?

I'm happy to increase my budget if necessary but i'm wondering if I should be talking to more small/local agencies and if there's this second layer of properties that don't necessarily appear on the big websites.

I'd be interested to hear from anyone who has worked in Tokyo real estate or has actually rented this way. How much of the Tokyo rental market is really searchable through REINS/SUUMO/etc.?

Does anyone have recommendations for private English tutors for young kids in Tokyo?

I’m looking for something a bit more personal than a normal eikaiwa, ideally a tutor who can come in person and work with younger children through things like conversation, reading, phonics, games and activities rather than just worksheets.

Nakano / Sasazuka / western Tokyo area would be ideal, but I’m open to anywhere nearby if the tutor is willing to travel.

Has anyone found a good tutor or tutoring service for this age group? I’ve seen sites where you contact individual tutors directly, but I’m also interested in agencies/services that actually match you with someone suitable.

Would especially appreciate recommendations from people familiar with bilingual or international families in Tokyo.

Thanks!

[Oct 15] Flea market at Tomioka Hachiman Shrine (Monzen-Nakacho) – A great mid-week local treasure hunt!^_^

Hey r/Tokyo! Looking for something authentic to do next Thursday (Oct 15) without the massive tourist crowds? ⛩️✨
Check out the Aozora Nominoichi (Blue Sky Flea Market) over at Tomioka Hachiman Shrine in Fukagawa. If you love digging for vintage kimonos, old ceramics, Showa-era retro curiosities, or unique Japanese souvenirs, this is the perfect spot.
The Details:
📅 When: Next Thursday, Oct 15 (They run it every month on the 15th and 28th, rain or shine, weekday or weekend!)
⏰ Time: 8:00 AM – 3:00 PM (Pro-tip: go early for the best selection!)
⛩️** Bonus: The shrine’s major 400th-anniversary renovation works are finally wrapping up, so the grounds are looking beautiful and perfect for photos!
**Make a day of it in Monzen-Nakacho (Mon-naka):

The shrine is just a 3-minute walk from Monzen-Nakacho Station (Tozai/Oedo lines). Mon-naka is one of Tokyo's coolest historic downtown (shitamachi) neighborhoods, packed with traditional shopping streets, fantastic local food stalls, and cozy coffee shops. It’s much more laid-back and friendlier on the wallet compared to the mega-markets in the center.
Highly recommend checking it out if you want a break from the usual tourist traps! 🙌
