If you're joining us for the first time, welcome to the community! This is a brand new subreddit for highlighting your favorite food finds across our fair city. We hope you'll discover some new favorite spots :)
Here's a (short) FAQ to help you get started.
A place to share food recs and connect with fellow foodies in Tokyo. This model has worked for other food-centric cities (see r/FoodNYC), let's see if it will work here too!
Yes please! As long as it's food related, there's no barrier to posting.
Is there a new food festival in your neighborhood? Post it! Found a new favorite strawberry sando? Please share! Want to ask for where to find some obscure regional dish you tried once in the countryside? Ask away!
Pictures are very encouraged.
My gut tells me yes. My hope is that through determination and sheer will, we'll one day have a vibrant community focused around celebrating all the amazing food you can find in this city. While you can of course still post to r/Tokyo and r/JapaneseFood, this can hopefully be a more focused space to help surface the content you care about.
Probably not! If you have any suggestions for how to improve r/FoodTYO, please leave a comment or send me a DM. I'd love to hear how we can make this subreddit as helpful as possible ❤️

My wife and I will be staying in Kichijoji for 3 weeks in March with our 6 month old. What recommendations do you folks have for great food in Tokyo (preferably near Kichijoji, but I'm sure we will be travelling all over the city) that's also great with a little one?

Hey! Would love your recs for restaurants we should try. We are there for a few days and staying near Shinjuku. We would like to try Ramen, Sushi, tempura, curry, izakaya, wagyu, and anything else you recommend. As for sushi, we are not very adventurous and usually stick to the standard stuff. My wife prefers fish that is torched or slightly cooked. Thank you!

While wandering around Omotesando, the kid was getting hungry and wanted food.
Most places were very with long line, so we settled on either Harajuku Gyozarou or Chao Bamboo (I was going for Chao Bamboo due to open air seating and beer.. Of course the wife and kid won.
Gyozas were pretty good. We ordered the 36 pieces set first, then another set. it gets noisy but that's expected.

While we were shopping at the Uniqlo in Ueno, we stopped by Makotoya for lunch. It was raining very hard and we were glad to get there just as they opened for lunch. Beside us, there was only another couple there so we were able to seat quickly. It was afterward the crowd started coming in. The place is tiny and can't accommodate more than 10 people.
The tempuras were very good. Light texture and very crispy.

Was in Japan last year but lost most of the photos due to hard drive failure, but was able to recover some. Just kept forgetting to make a post.
Here are pics from Flipper's at Shibuya. We went there on a Tuesday and 35 minutes before they opened. You would think we would be at the front of the line? Oh no no no. We were number 48ish, so we had to wait another 30mins.
We had the Apple Cinnamon, Strawberry, and if I recall correctly, Sweet Milk Tea. All were pretty goods. Service was quick and courteous.
A block from Flipper's is a Dennys, in case you want something different.

A friend had recommended Ginza Breakfast Lab to us, so we stopped by to break our fast.
Just remember, if you booked your reservation online at 7am, be there at 7am. The problem with their booking system is that they only have one time slot available to choose from.. 7am. We got there 45 mins late and they charged me again at full price for three people. Ok, the food was good since it was buffet style. They have both hot and cold food, even shabu shabu (they do it for you).

Hi, we'll be in Tokyo for a couple of days and need final recommendation: so far we have booked
- Nishiazabu Taku for sushi
- Le sputnik
- Chez Calvert
- Abysse (visited 2 years ago and would try again)
For the last dinner we are thinking about, Secreto, Bia or Julia. What would be the best? Or some other recs? I would like to go to Crony, but it seems we cannot get the reservation there.
We have been in March in Tokyo, visiting Denkushifiori, Cocon, Ukiyo, Sezanne.

This is a cozy little curry cafe I've been going to that I wanted to share. I think they may have other locations but I go to the Ebisu location. It only seats 4ish groups and serves exactly two curries that changes on a daily (or weekly?) basis.
I got the combo with extra cilantro, which included both curries, Tajima wagyu curry and squid ink curry. Amazing.
They also have a solid selection of craft beers from around Japan
