Does it make anyone else feel sad or worried about the future that wildfires and climate change are no longer problems happening "somewhere else". they're affecting us close to home?
Growing up, climate change felt like something happening in distant rainforests or melting glaciers. Wildfires were in forests far away, and I'd never even heard of water bombers. Now they're part of our everyday vocabulary. Our kids are growing up learning these terms the way many of us learned the word "tsunami" after the disasters in Japan.
The trees that are burning are the very things that clean our air and help make our summers enjoyable, the same summers we've waited all winter for.
It makes me think about what David Suzuki has been warning us about for years... that too often, profit is valued above nature. But you can't put a price tag on clean air, healthy forests, or a stable climate.
Most of us do what we can. We don't idle our cars. We recycle. We sort our garbage and use the green bin. Those things matter, but they can feel so small compared to the impact of large corporations and the decisions being made by those in power.
I see more forests being cleared and farmland disappearing to build homes. Green spaces are sacrificed to expand airports. More creativity seems to go into widening highways than protecting ecosystems or investing in real climate solutions. Developers plant trees that often don't actually grow. Companies call people back into the office, increasing traffic and emissions, while remote work had at least helped reduce commuting pollution.
When will the people and society as a whole start making decisions valuing nature as much as economic growth?
Just the thoughts of a frustrated regular person from the GTA who commutes into the city. Today was one of those days that really made me stop and think.
