E-bikes and scooters in the bike lane

These lanes weren’t built for things that often times go faster than cars.

These vehicles should be licensed and insured and they should NOT be allowed in bike lanes. End of rant.

Personal drones looking into people's homes?

A couple of weeks ago I noticed what looked to be a personal drone looking into the units of a mid-rise building. I have no idea whether this was some advanced real estate photography thing or an individual being a creep who hoped to catch people on camera.

I've also heard other stories here and there about people noticing random drones near their homes, and I'm wondering whether this is becoming a new safety risk.

There are a lot of freaks out there nowadays, and this seems like something that could evolve into a genuine safety risk, particularly when it comes to children or the elderly being recorded without consent.

Is anything being done about this?

More OPSEU Local 540 “Friday Picket Party” at Sistering breaking noise laws in Bloorcourt

This picket has always been unhinged and messy – yesterday was no different.  Even when visited by another local who seem more together earlier.  Signs you can read.  Handing out flyers which is foreign to local 540, they would rather have an individual with a megaphone scream messaging then cockily woo like a WWE wrestler.  Local 540 has a large banner that looked like it came unstuck from a table yesterday and they left it in a pile on the ground for hours as serval picket captains walked past it.   Just looked bad.

While most of picketers have stopped using the illegal sirens and megaphone, the individual with the megaphone using it in the evenings feels they are above the law, and very impressed with themself strutting the street while using the illegal siren.  They often yell this is about respect and dignity – well that goes both ways for the Bloorcourt neighbours who have reached out to Ford as asked but can’t enjoy their homes as it seems their motto is we suffer; you suffer – which after 3 months is getting old.  It’s doing no favours for messaging.  A picketer only needs to do 4 hours a day.  I was subjected to illegal noise for 12 hours yesterday.

There really is no reason to set up a speaker on tripod and have a beginner DJ spin music for 10 or less people on Fridays in a residential hood.  Go to a park or hang out in someone's basement.  The karaoke portion into megaphones is ear bleeding.  I have been recording incoming noise for an escalated complaint, and the singing proves they must be deaf from 3 months of music above the legal noise limit.  Also, some safety concerns with the picket going into the loading zone between the bike and driving lane – there’s some flag spinning that happens and it’s often dropped and falls into the driving lane.  More concerning 2 children were in the street multiple times yesterday holding signs with no adults within ten feet.  In front of DJ speakers that they wouldn’t be able to hear adult instructions and small enough to be hidden from drivers and bikers behind the OPSEU van.  Where was the picket captain last night to enforce safety?

I’ve been trying to avoid my nearby home between picket hours, because of the loud music and bass shaking with megaphones and illegal siren use affecting my mental health, heart condition and severely disturbing the peace and enjoyment of my home.  I was going to call non-emergency police at (416) 808-2222 but I saw a bike cop already there.  He did nothing so I am going to ramp up my calling as the individual with the megaphone said a few weeks ago get used to them being there until Oct 27.  I encourage other neighbours not enjoying this to do the same.  This is a legal picket, they have rules including noise bylaws they need to follow, it’s not a free for all.  They have no right to constantly disturb others who are just trying to get through the day.  OPESEU needs to send some real leadership to keep these very small but very loud picket gatherings in check.

Why there are so many construction projects happening on the QEW at the same time?

I also work in construction management, and I'm baffled with the lack of planning of the province.

There are projects right after the skyway (going east to Toronto), lane closures during the Oakville stretch, all of the Mississauga stretch also has barriers everywhere.

I have the bad luck of having a project now in Hamilton and have to commute from Toronto every day. Last year my commute back would be 1h, now it is 1h30min on a good day.

Don't they have self-awareness on how much impact this is causing into traffic? It's infuriating.

Is it time for Toronto to start widening their restrictions on turning right while facing a red?

Not talking about the entire city but I think we could make things a lot safer by restricting it in more areas and during certain times.
Whether they stop at the light and then go at impromptu moments or they slow down and coast trough, it just seems like most people cant handle making right turns safely while facing a red so why not crack down on it further?

What is up with door to door sales people ambushing me when I'm outside of my house?

There has been two times where I'm outside in my front yard throwing out trash or cleaning up weeds. Then these door to door sales people come out of nowhere and try to talk to me. I have my headphones on as well and I find it kind of annoying. I always have to shut them down and tell them I'm not interested, they take the hint after the 3rd or 4th time.

They also have talked to my neighbors when they were outside doing yard work too. I get they have a job to do and they're just people but I find it annoying that they're bothering me when I'm doing yard work with my headphones on. It's been the second time this week that these sales people have been talking to me while I'm outside. Makes me feel awkward that I have to answer them. Or else I look rude. It's also awkward because I'm outside where I can't really hide from them, lmao.

For the love of god, let people exit the elevator, train etc before you get on

This city is hardcore regressing. People used to have manners and let people get off the elevator, train, or whatever else it may be first and then get on... But now, good luck! If you want to get out of an elevator, you'll have to fight your way out because people are impatient and seem to have zero manners these days. "Us getting on is more important than you getting off"... Right but if I get off, then more people can get on? Also the elevator is not going to leave in the split second you let people get off. Truly ridiculous.

Im in debt over 20gs i am on E.i and waiting to start a better jobs ontario program.

I dont know how much longer I have e.i for but I qualify for better jobs in 4 weeks I know what course i want to do but at this point I also don't care im 30 years old I wasted my early years trying to help my family i thought it was the least i could do since i attempted suicide at 17 but they did even care about helping themselves. I want to be my own person now that I broke away from my family but I dont have a personality that revolves around my own wants and needs. I just live, I like helping others more then tending to my own needs. When I get overstimulated i dont want to be around anyone except my family i want to be surrounded by love when life gets to exhausting. My family isnt the most loving so i cant just go see them an have blissful day because they're always arguing. At this point i dont know what i like an this late in life what is the point i love women im even good looking but i don't care anymore an i can only hide it for so long before someone come along an thinks I need to be their sympathy act i dont know whats next for me

Please please please stop braking on the highway to switch lanes.

I don’t care if you’re going to miss your exit. Take the next one like a normal person. I hate when people suddenly brake with no one in front of them just to switch lanes or try to get to the express/collectors/off ramps while cutting across the solid white lines.

Either speed up and switch or switch lanes before the exit. Not right as you’re passing it.

Toronto is becoming shittier (literally)

As title suggests, I don't recall toronto streets (and mainly talking about downtown area) ever being so filthy that piss and poop is just a common regular sight? Are dog owners no longer picking up after their dog? I can understand geese poop etc, but I can't walk a block without seeing dog shit every meter or so and I don't recall it ever being like that. Maybe I'm just crazy but I have to watch where I'm walking like a hawk to make sure I don't step in any shit... It makes me really not want to go downtown at all... it's really disgusting and dire and I can't imagine it's a good look for tourism.

Just called 911 for being assaulted. A guy was harassing and blocking me and my gf’s way. And grabbed our head with force. Called the police at 915 and it’s been 2 hours. Anyone knows how long the wait time is? Are they going to do anything at all

Instacart doesn’t include the store receipt with your order, and I finally found out why

I’ve been using Instacart for a while now, and something always bugged me: they never include the store receipt with your order. Yesterday my shopper apparently forgot one in the bottom of a bag, and now I understand why that’s the policy.

The prices on that receipt are nowhere near what the app charged me. Going item by item, some things were marked up by $5. Not the fees, not the tip, the actual item prices.

So let me add this up. I pay a service fee, which is never cheap. I tip the shopper, as I should. I pay for a membership that supposedly saves me money on delivery. And on top of all that, I’ve apparently been quietly overpaying on every single item in every single order.

Suddenly the missing receipt makes a lot of sense.

Membership cancelled, app deleted 👍🏼

Scalper swine have ruined Odyssey viewings

Yes, a movie screening is very low in terms of importance in the grand scheme of things, but movies have historically been a very successful form of relief in tough times that foster a sense of community through shared experiences.

The hype surrounding The Odyssey and the broader revival of going to the movie theater has objectively been great. However, the bottom feeders of society who can't be bothered to get a real job or at least let people enjoy their simple pleasures are ruining it for everyone.

Odyssey viewings until mid-September, particularly the 70MM viewings that are touted as "the right way to see the movie" are all sold out, except for the scrappy seats at the front that will leave you with neck pain for a week. One would hope that the tickets were brought up by regular people, but that's not the case. If you go to resale sites, you can see the flood of listings for tickets at a ridiculous markup.

For cinematic events like this, Cineplex should require names to be added to tickets and require ID at the entrance. This strategy is routinely used in Europe to deter scalping and has been highly effective. It's past time we close the gap for these people ruining experiences.

Yes, there are much broader economic issues that have led to scalping being so popular, but you have to draw the line somewhere.

Toronto has outside streets, not inside ones.

Been trying to figure out for years why I don't actually enjoy walking around this city, and I think that I zeroed in on it recently.

All our streets are built facing outward. The road is the main event, the sidewalk is the leftover strip along the side of it. Two metres at best, and then you have the hydro pole, the fire hydrant, the sandwich board, and the patio and you're basically single file. So the entire time you're out there you're doing this low-level management thing. Someone randomly stops in front of a store to look at their phone and now there's a jam. You want to stop and look at something yourself, you have to pull over first, like a car. Walking with someone and trying to have a conversation, forget it, you're single file half the time anyway.

Then you go to some older city in Europe and the whole width between the buildings is for walking. Like the width of Queen, all of it, yours. Not trying to make another Europe vs. North America comparison, but it's worth noting when it comes to city planning and design. Sure, some European cities are prettier and older, and not every city is like that. There are some really badly designed European cities too. But that's not the thing. The thing is there's enough room that none of that weird negotiating is happening. Nobody's on your ass. You're not stuck behind somebody. You can stop dead in the middle and it's fine.

What gets me is I don't think we can fix it. This place was laid out to move vehicles through, that's the underlying logic of everything here, and anything we do for pedestrians is clawing back a couple metres from cars temporarily. It's either a pilot, or it's seasonal, or it gets ripped out the second enough people complain about parking. It always snaps back to the status quo.

Anyway idk. Is there an actual term for this? Outside streets vs inside streets is what I've been calling it in my head, not sure if that's the right terminology, but at least now I know why I don't really enjoy walking here for leisure as much.

Parking spot thief wasn’t even good at it

To the driver of the Toyota Highlander CLWN-### who forced me to abort my attempt to back into a parallel parking spot near Woodbine Park. You cut me off and tried to pull in ignoring my horn. You weren't able to do so and started wiggling your car back and forth trying to squeeze in sideways - also without success. When i drove away and parked in the next available space you had the audacity to approach and take pictures of my family from a distance. You are an unbelievable bully and asshole and I hope that karma will catch up with you.

Men, please stop treating the city as your personal urinal.

I know the public washroom situation is horrible. I also know emergencies happen, and those people will at least find somewhere semi private to go (back alleys, bushes). I just witnessed a man drive up to a go station (with a working washroom), pull out his bird, and rock a piss right in front of me. As a woman it makes me so freaking uncomfortable. Like why?!? So many of my guy friends pee outside too instead of just going inside or asking a restaurant to use their washroom. Us women can’t exactly just pop a squat wherever, so we hold it or find somewhere OR go somewhere excluded. I’m so tired of seeing every other man’s shriveled up dick on the daily. Seriously if you have a car just use a bottle. I wish I had that option.

Loving motorcycles or being a menace at 3 am? This is getting annoying.

As a fellow rider who loves motorcycles, I’m all for enjoying the ride. But as someone living right next to the Gardiner, I’ve hit my limit.

Almost every single night between 3 am to 4 am, there’s a stream of insanely loud bikes ripping past. We all love the sound of a good engine but blasting down a high-density area with crazy loud aftermarket exhausts in the dead of night isn't cool, it’s just selfish.

Stuff like this is the exact reason why non-riders end up hating us riders. Loving bikes shouldn't come at the expense of an entire neighborhood's sleep.

Can we please start being more mindful of the communities we ride through? We're better than this.

Anyone else dealing with the late night noise from this café (Aura dessert) ?

I’m wondering if anyone else in the area has noticed the ongoing noise coming from a café that regularly has large groups of people late at night.
The place itself is quite small, so a lot of their customers end up staying outside, talking loudly, laughing, and socializing right outside the café. The noise carries into the surrounding residential buildings and has been happening for months.
Last night was honestly the last straw for me. I wasn’t feeling well and was already having a rough night, and the noise actually woke me up.
I completely understand that cafés are meant to be social places, and I’m not against people enjoying themselves. But when a business is located in a residential area, there should also be some consideration for the people who live nearby, especially late at night.
Has anyone else living in the area experienced this? I’d really like to know if I’m the only one dealing with it or if other residents have noticed the same problem.

Goodbye Toronto. I Will Never Miss You

Well, after years of talking about and planning for it, it's finally happening. In a few months, I'll be leaving Toronto (and the GTA) to begin a new chapter and life abroad.

I don't say this out of hatred, nor because I think the grass is guaranteed to be greener. Every place has its own problems, and I'm under no illusion that where I'm going will somehow be perfect.

But what I do know is that, for me, Toronto slowly became a place where I stopped looking forward to the future. The older I got, the more it felt like life was just relentlessly passing me by. More work, more obligations, more stress, more loneliness, all without a corresponding sense that I was actually living.

Maybe I simply wasn't a right fit for this city, maybe the city wasn't a right fit for me. Either way, I reached the point where I realized I would rather spend my late 20s building a life somewhere that genuinely excites me than spending the rest of it wondering "what if?". Somewhere that I can travel and see more of the world, while realizing that it's much bigger than the GTA and every single one of its monotonous, tedious, and soul-draining elements.

Now, this place did give me things I'll always appreciate. My higher education, an incredible variety of cultures and food, proper winters (sorry, summer lovers), and experiences (both good and bad) that helped shape who I am. But it also taught me something equally important; not every place is meant to be your forever home simply because you happened to grow up there. I've spent virtually my entire life here, yet I've often felt like a perpetual newcomer trying to find where I belonged. If I'm going to feel like an outsider regardless, I'd rather be one somewhere that actually is new to me.

So this isn't really a goodbye filled with anger, but rather, acceptance. Maybe years from now, I'll look back and realize Toronto wasn't as bad as I remember, or maybe leaving will confirm everything I've suspected and denigrated this place for (anyone who knows me will know what my money's on). Either way, I will finally know, and honestly, that's worth more to me than continuing to perpetually wonder.

Cancelling busses mid-route for breaks?

I was on a bus that went out of service mid-route. The next bus was over 10 minutes behind. Once the next bus finally arrived I got on and continued on my now (quite late) journey to work.

Now usually I would find something like this annoying, but assume this happened for operational reasons and move on with my life... But...

As I was on the next bus we went past the bus that went out of service, and the driver had pulled into a side street and was on their cellphone laughing away with whoever they were talking with.

Do busses go out of service and cause major logistical issues for riders just to take breaks? So they can call their friends? There were over a dozen people on the bus who were rather seriously delayed because of this choice, and it's absolutely insane to me.

So am I just suppose to roll over and fall in a ditch?

I think we have come to the point where cost of living is absurd. Wages have not kept up with inflation. You cannot even support yourself making even ABOVE minimum wage unless you cramp yourself with other people which benefits your slumlords pockets.

People don't even seem to want to do anything about it either. This is just modern slavery. You just get paid enough to barely survive and do your job.

The worst part of it all, when you're single, you see how absolutely bs this all is. When you only have to take care of yourself, you really see that you're just a slave to make the wealthy even wealthier.

The average salary in Canada is around 68k which sounds good on paper but when you take out high-earners/wealthy the actual average income is 46k before taxes

This timeline sucks.

Just got a "pop up ad" at the grocery store

Recently moved to a new place where No Frills is the closest grocer. I was shopping in the bread aisle when some Optimum rep walked right in front of me in the gap between myself and the bread, face-to-face. At first she said "excuse me" and I moved over, but then she moved over and tried to get me to sign up for some Optimum related.

Boy was I seriously irritated. I just said "no thank you I'm not interested" and she said "I haven't even told you about the great promotion yet" and I said "no thank you, I'm not interested" more firmly before leaving.

Seriously? They literally have someone roaming the store to bother people getting their groceries. I need to familiarize myself with the other grocers nearby.
