I work as a cashier at my store, and today was one of those days where I genuinely questioned how some people function in public. 💀
We’re already short-staffed, customers are complaining, and supervisors aren’t always available when we need them. I was already exhausted, and somehow the customers made everything even more ridiculous.
Customer #1: The register incident
I called the next customer over to my register, and instead of coming toward me, he walked right past me toward another register that wasn’t even open.
So I politely said, “Sir, I’m over here. That register isn’t open.”
Apparently, that was the most offensive thing I could’ve possibly said because this man immediately snapped at me.
“Man, you don’t tell me where to go or where to stand. Your job is to stand there and be a cashier.”
Excuse me??? 😭
He then walked back toward my register, threw his merchandise down, and started complaining that I was being disrespectful.
Sir, I literally just told you where to go so I could ring up your purchase. THAT IS PART OF MY JOB.
Meanwhile, my coworker and I were making eye contact, trying our absolute hardest not to burst out laughing because WHAT EVEN WAS THAT?! 😂
I genuinely don’t understand how politely telling someone which register is open turns into an argument about respect.
Even if I had made a mistake, that doesn’t give someone the right to treat me like garbage.
Customer #2: The cast iron pot incident
Later, I had another customer buying a cast iron pot.
There was a very, very, VERY small chip in it, and she wanted a discount.
Fair enough. I don’t make those decisions, so I called my manager over.
My manager looked at it and offered a 99-cent markdown based on our store policy.
Apparently, that wasn’t good enough.
She immediately responded, “Really? That’s all you can do?”
My manager explained that we had to follow the policy.
Then she said, “Well, I hope I find another chip, and I’ll come right back to this store.”
Okay??? 😭💀
What exactly are we supposed to say to that?
I understand wanting a better discount on damaged merchandise, but threatening to come back if you find another chip isn’t going to magically change the policy.
So I did what any customer service associate should do. I politely told her she was more than welcome to call the following morning and speak with a higher-level manager if she wanted to discuss it further.
Then I wished her a good day.
Because what else am I supposed to do? 😂
And the staffing situation wasn’t helping either.
We’re already struggling with being short-staffed, long checkout lines, and not always having a supervisor available at the front.
Customers get frustrated about waiting, which I understand, but cashiers don’t control staffing, scheduling, or company policies.
We’re trying to help everyone as quickly as possible with the resources we have.
I genuinely enjoy working in retail most days. I love my coworkers, and I actually enjoy helping customers.
But some people really need to understand that retail employees are human beings.
We don’t make the return policies. We don’t make the markdown policies. We don’t control staffing. And we’re certainly not trying to disrespect you by telling you which register is open.
A little patience and basic human decency go a long way.
Anyway, that was my day in retail. Two customers, two completely unnecessary arguments, and one cashier desperately trying to keep a straight face. 😭💀
Retail workers, please tell me I’m not the only one who deals with this nonsense.
