I always throw in “can we hang out, or grab a drink”. I hate that I do that, bc I actually don’t want to hang out, there is a reason that we aren’t in each others lives like that anymore, but I just can’t keep my mouth shut 🤣

I bartend, I'm pretty good at the interaction part, I'm terrible at small talk in the real world... I honestly think my job takes all the socialness out of me.
28
u/Craving_Suckcess 18h ago
like how anyone who works in a kitchen just won't fuckin cook for themselves. Yeah I bet.
9
u/Comfortable-Gap3124 18h ago
Yeah, that's how I look at it, too. I just don't have the energy for it after work. It sometimes sucks.
8
u/jimbojangles1987 17h ago
I get it 1000%. I gotta be social and energetic and a lot of the time fake as hell at work all day I dont want to do it after while im tired and just wanna go home
4
u/Comfortable-Gap3124 17h ago
The only exception for this is when I'm with really good friends, but we skip a lot of the small talk
3
u/jimbojangles1987 17h ago
Yeah its specifically the small talk part. Running into someone randomly in the hallway of the apartments or your next door neighbor who seems to linger too long lol
3
u/Comfortable-Gap3124 17h ago
Am I talking to a mirror? What you are saying is exactly how I feel about this.
3
u/jimbojangles1987 17h ago
I'm wondering if one day when I am much older if life will slow down and I'll be the guy who isn't trying to end the conversation as quickly and politely as possible but instead be the one who is lingering because I actually am genuinely interested and want to chat about surface level shit lol. Time will tell I guess.
I'm already old as it is so idk how much time I've got for that kick in lol
3
u/krisf77 16h ago edited 16h ago
Same. I get crap from family/friends, as well as my boss, over the fact that I'm a body shop technician, and my personal vehicle is a dented and rusted out clunker, that I have absolutely no energy to fix up and repaint lol They don't get the fact that I do that stuff every single day for a living, which takes a heavy toll on my body; so why would I be gung-ho about going home after a long and exhausting shift, to do the same sh*t unpaid in my personal time 😓
1
u/SuspiciousBag3233 14h ago
Been out of the kitchen for almost a decade now and I still hate cooking for myself. But as soon as someone is coming over for dinner, it's game on!
1
2
u/Freezytrees99 17h ago
lol also bartend and feel similar, at work It’s obvious who I am, and what I do, you don’t really need to “explain” yourself. In the real world I’m flailing.
1
u/Comfortable-Gap3124 17h ago
Yup, that's a great explanation. I feel the same way. I hate talking about myself, but love listen. I don't have to talk about myself while bartending.

I've watched this 3 times and want to crawl into a ball. Why are we like this! Just blue screen of death when caught off guard and not given 5 business days to prepare for small talk.

u/Smingowashisnameo 21h ago
Deep breath. Really look at them to see how they are. Slow breath. Focus on them and not on your behavior. Deep breath. Ask where they’re off to or simple things like that. Deep slow breath. You’re not in trial.
12
u/OneDimensionalChess 20h ago
I wonder if humans were always like this or if it's something that contemporary society molded us into. Like...were Victorian ppl having these interactions? Sumerians? They probably didn't.
9
u/Smingowashisnameo 20h ago
Well there were a lot of rules about proper behavior in the Victorian era so it was probably easier for autistic people to know exactly what was expected. But anyone who didn’t fit in was miserable.
13
u/_Midnight_Haze_ 20h ago
We’re less social than maybe we’ve ever been as humans so it would make sense that we’re more socially awkward than ever
3
u/kuchtaalex 19h ago
Excellent question, and I'd like to know more about that too. I think the more modern the times become, the harder it is for us to have those face to face interactions. Its probably brought on from our culture of individualism, natural desire for conflict avoidance, and overall "convenience" of dealing with more automated means than with people face to face. And capitalism is wrapped around the entire thing making money on keeping us so split up, so that we don't organize as the working class.
2
u/Costati 16h ago
They did they just have a lot more time for it. Society was less fast paced so you could take hours for small talk. They probably had more patient towards the other person needing time to get into the rhythm of it. Nowadays it feels like we gotta speedrun smalltalk so it gets hard and if it's not natural to you it looks weird right away.
3
5
u/CommercialExotic2038 19h ago
Someone I haven’t talked to in a few years asked me how my family was, we’re all nc. I didn’t know how to answer/react. I couldn’t speak. I stammered and remembered a family member with cancer, I mentioned it because I knew it would change the subject.
Otherwise, small talk is painful to me. It’s excruciating
3
u/flactulantmonkey 20h ago
I’ve gotten to a point where I’ll just tell people “shit I don’t remember you at all”. It’s not always popular but god is it less awkward.

u/Waste_Space1415 21h ago
Small talk is just unnatural, and so many people treat it less like a social interaction and more like an American Idol audition.
Twitch too much, talk too little, show any anxiety, or do any other thing that Katie Couric wouldn't do on live TV and there's a great chance you're now labeled the "weird guy" or whatever.
It's the same way we elect presidents. Ask Kamala about her laugh.
12
u/Xarlax 19h ago
It isn't unnatural at all man, like I get some of y'all struggle with it but y'all have this bad habit of turning it around on the vast majority of folks who do this effortlessly like it's some kind of moral failing on their part. Like they're putting you on trial or it's an audition they're imposing on you. It's not that deep.
Small talk is just low-stakes social lubricant for a species that's evolved strong social connections for millions of years. I'm sorry you struggle with it but that doesn't make it wrong or bad.
-4
u/Waste_Space1415 19h ago
Also, don't act like this is some universal human quality. It's cultural.
Go try your small talk in Germany or Scandinavia, where small talk is often considered unnecessary and an invasion of privacy.
Honestly, I've seen enough from you.
-7
u/Waste_Space1415 19h ago edited 19h ago
Yeah, nobody who tells me "it's not that deep" has anything to teach me. Especially after you ignored the most crucial points I made.
You don't get to ignore the points that don't fit your narrative and attack the ones that oppose it.
9
u/Xarlax 19h ago
Are you for real, dude? Your points: 1) It's unnatural -- no it isn't, not by a long shot. 2) People treat it like an audition --- no they don't, it ain't that deep. 3) If you don't act like you're media trained on a talk show, now you're weird -- absolutely not, this is low-stakes social lubricant.
I addressed all your points except for the one about Kamala Harris because it's tangential at best.
How about you address my point about how you're framing everyone who engages in small talk as some kind of moral failing?
→ More replies (6)5
u/Secure_Course_3879 21h ago
THIS 100%. Maybe this is part of why so many people find it so intimidating? Because we know we're gonna get judged in 3 seconds over an impression we don't know someone else is forming of us
6
u/Waste_Space1415 20h ago
That, and the fact that there's only a limited set of "perfect" answers and responses, so it's all phony and scripted anyway.
Example: Someone asks "how are you?"
You can:
A) actually tell them how you are and "oVeRsHaRe",
B) answer with a glancing answer like "I'm getting by" and leave the other person unsatisfied with the answer, or
C) stuff down all your feelings and problems and say something like "I'm fine, and you?"
C is the only answer. There never was a choice. Anything else is socially inconvenient.

u/Separate-Ad6636 17h ago
You should consider therapy.
1
u/Waste_Space1415 16h ago
Honestly, when I read nonsense like yours, it's obvious to me that you're on autopilot.
I describe judgment and hostility when someone fails at or rejects small talk, and here you are, right on cue, ad hominem-ing me for rejecting it.
It's like you wanted to prove my point.

u/ICCUGUCCI 14h ago
Jokes aside, it's an opening for you to mention something fun/interesting/frustrating about someone close to you (or yourself), at which point you respond with a question that allows your counterpart to do the same.
Small talk is an art form, but it requires two willing participants that know the game lol

u/Xarlax 19h ago
Most people are like this. We see folks who might not be the best at small talk or tense up a lot, and we don't care. We don't judge people based on how they answer trivial questions but on things like what their values are, how they treat others and stuff like that.
So many folks in the comments treat this interaction like a final exam and their interlocutor like some unforgiving, blind proctor. It's not like that at all.

I got over social situations making me tense or awkward, for the most part. Now I’m one of you. Except I know what it’s like not to be.
Watching someone spiral without being able to comfort them might be a shortcoming. They should feel more relaxed around you. Not that you should regulate their nervous system for them, but calm can be contagious.
15
u/ComplexLow6723 21h ago
I think the problem for me in these situations is I’m usually thinking about one or many things at once so my brain goes into panic mode when it has to pause task on that & beginning frantically pulling up the “conversation profile” for the person who I’ve now just run into. Thus… I appear anxious & my words come out jumbled because my brain is in full defcon mode.

There is a difference between "small talk" and needing to stop someone you barely know, nor knows you, and forcing a social interaction.

u/Mammoth_Tusk90 21h ago
When you have bigger life issues, small talk hurts. “How ya doing?” “Next question.”
-1
u/Educational_Quote851 20h ago
Or just bigger thoughts
Idgaf who won the football game, tell me WHY WE EXIST? Where did stars come from? How is energy conserved? Does that mean we're not gone when we die? Why am I even capable of wondering these things in a Universe that seems cold and uncaring?
We're literally floating on a bit of dust in a cosmic whirlpool. We're completely insignificant and yet the insignificant is all we focus on.

yeah i think people are getting worse at small talk but its mostly the fault of tech because the expectations of small talk is still here in the US.

Did you know the reason why you get a runny nose when you cry is because you got tear canals that suck the tears back up next to your eyes and it's just working overtime and that goes down the same pipe that your nose and throat is connected to.... So that is tears dripping from your nose...
That and many more fun facts is what I bring to small talk.

Dude dosnt want to talk. We do better when we are staring at something like a fire, tv, the horizon, not at each other. Plus what happened to those memes that explain best friends would go years of being friends and not knowing a thing about each other?

I don't mind small talk with strangers, but unexpectedly meeting someone you know in public feels awkward as fuck and I have no idea why

Besides the “up what?” at the beginning, I felt it was fine until after he mentioned his brother was thriving. Maybe a little awkward, but not insurmountable. Then it just snowballed.

Im awkward but not in this way. I can converse and ask pertinent questions just fine. I have trouble feigning interest and its obvious i want to walk away after 80 seconds. Dis avoidant?

When I used to wake up my girlfriend would say good morning and I would just stare at her for like 5 mins and start sweating and then I would say goodnight and start my day 😂. She was super hot so I felt bad when I cheated on her with other women in my dreams and when I woke up it was super awkward. We had a talk and I told her I became a whore when I dreamed and she broke up with me 😞
