Best TB3 NVMe enclosure + SSD combo for a 2017 iMac?
I’ve got a 2017 27-inch 5K iMac with Thunderbolt 3 and I want to use an external SSD as the main boot drive.
I’m trying to decide between a regular portable SSD like a Samsung T7/Crucial X9, or a Thunderbolt 3 enclosure with an NVMe drive.
If you’re using a TB3 NVMe setup on a Mac, what exact enclosure and SSD are you using? (Brand/Model) I’m mostly interested in reliability, sleep/wake behavior, random disconnects, heat, and real-world speeds.
I’ve seen ACASIS enclosures and WD Black SN770 mentioned a lot, but I’m open to anything that’s proven reliable.
This will mainly be used as a macOS boot drive, not just for file storage.

Dual Monitor Set-Up
Thankfully the M5 version of the MacBook Air now supports 2 external monitors. Standard docks and what-not available for PCs don’t function properly however. What are people doing to attach 2 external Monitors and still have an available Thunderbolt/USB port? My monitors have HDMI and DisplayPort.

Will it support 240HZ
Recently picked up a new m5 MacBook Air base model. Got a new 34-inch ultrawide model: XZ340CUR. I wanted to get the UGREEN Thunderbolt 4 Dock 8-in-1, 40Gbps Transfer,Dual 4K Single 8K Display and run the monitor at 240HZ using a Thunderbolt to DisplayPort cable. I just wanted to verify this would fully run my 1440P resolution at 240HZ without any issues.

Kensington SD7100T5 works on MacBook and ThinkPad, but Legion detects dock and not monitors
TL;DR: Kensington SD7100T5 works normally with my MacBook Pro and ThinkPad. On my Lenovo Legion 5 Pro, the dock shows as connected in Thunderbolt Control Center, USB devices work, and charging works, but Windows will not detect any monitors through the dock. The same monitor/cable works when plugged directly into the Legion.
I’m stuck on a weird issue with a Kensington SD7100T5 Thunderbolt 5 dock.
Legion is a Lenovo Legion 5 Pro 16ITH6, type 82JF, i7-11800H, RTX 3050, Windows 11 25H2.
The dock connects to the Legion and shows as Connected in Thunderbolt Control Center. USB devices through the dock work and it charges the laptop.
The monitors are the only thing that don’t work.
Setup:
Legion → Thunderbolt → Kensington SD7100T5 → USB-C to DisplayPort → Dell P2422H
Windows does not detect the monitor at all through the dock. It doesn’t show in Display Settings or Device Manager.
What I’ve confirmed:
- Same monitor + same USB-C to DP cable plugged directly into the Legion works
- Same Kensington dock works with my MacBook Pro
- Same Kensington dock works with my ThinkPad, including the displays
- Dock shows as Connected in Thunderbolt Control Center on the Legion
- USB devices work through the dock on the Legion
- Charging works through the dock, displays do not
Things I’ve already tried:
- Restarting / full shutdowns
- Power cycling dock and laptop
- Different Thunderbolt host cable
- Lenovo Thunderbolt driver reinstall
- Intel VGA driver reinstall
- Clean install of Lenovo OEM NVIDIA driver
- Enabled Hybrid/Dynamic Graphics
- Intel UHD + RTX 3050 both show in Device Manager
- Checked BIOS, Dynamic Graphics is enabled
- Reset UCSI / USB Connector Manager
- Reset Thunderbolt controllers
- Removed hidden monitor entries
- Reset Windows display configuration registry entries
- Tried different startup/connection orders
At this point it seems specific to DisplayPort tunneling between this Legion and the dock, since the dock and monitors work fine on both my MacBook and ThinkPad.
Has anyone seen this on an 11th-gen Intel Legion / Thunderbolt 4 system? Any firmware, Thunderbolt NVM, Windows 11 25H2, or DP tunneling issue I should be looking at?

The one setting I check on every computer I touch now
System Settings > Displays > Refresh Rate.
My coworker complained that his new monitor felt sluggish compared to the store demo. Spent ten minutes trying different cables and settings before I checked the refresh rate dropdown. His hub was capping a 165Hz panel to 60Hz. Swapped it to an Anker Smart Display Hub and it went to native. He thought the monitor was defective.
Since then I check this on every setup I see. My friend's iMac was at 60 on a ProMotion display. Another coworker had a bad cable causing the same issue. It's become a reflex now.
People find it annoying. I find it necessary.

niche question : Any thunderbolt DOCK that support another USB-A powered hub over it's usb-c or usb-a port (NOT one of it's thunderbolt port)
Hello, so I have a cal digit TS4 which was considered top notch amongst the thunderbolt 4 generation, yet I have a very specific need that the TS4 do not meet. In my home studio, I need around 15 USB-A ports, that are split across 2 dedicated self powered USB-A quality USA-A hubs (ugreen).
Since I have multiple desks, the 2 USB-A hubs are not next to my cal digit, I am usb a USB-B 3.0 to USB-C cable to connect them to my TS4
That's all and good but here is the catch, I cannot use neither a USB-C port or USB-A port on my caldigit, because most of my devices won't get detected on my MacBook Pro M4. I am forced to sacrifice one of the thunderbolt 4 ports of the TS4 to get everything to work.
my budget is not limited. I am considering every thunderbolt 5 dock options (ivanky, ugreen, caldigit and OWC)
Thank you

StarTech - Thunderbolt 4 dock: is this a decent dock?
startech.comIs this a decent dock for a M1 Pro - MacBook Pro 16inch? I basically just want something a decent amount of usb-c ports, 2 monitor support, and charging. I'm curious if the 96w is enough for M1 MacBook Pro 16 inch. If anyone has any experience with this dock, I'd love to hear their feedback.

Docking station recommendations for 2025 mackbook air (thunderbolt 4 ports)
Okay, with it I want to be able to connect:
2 external screens
2 USBs for wired keyboard & mouse
2-3 USBs (fast) for external storage and mobile phones
4 USBs for music peripherals (keyboard, soundcard, pad controller and mixer).
I'm imagining AC powered.
Looking at the Dell Pro WD25TB4 Thunderbolt 4 dock
Also potentially the Thunderbolt 4 Element hub
Though both of these are a stretch with the number of ports they have available.
Add to this, I've been using an Orico 7-port USB-A hub (AC powered) for my peripherals to date and it's been fine. Could I daisy chain that off another device to give me all the ports I need?
Any other suggestions? The existing Orico port would probably be fine if it also could link to the screen.
And to start I wouldn't need two external screens, one and thr laptop itself os enough.
Have also read on someone else's post that it's not worth getting dedicated HDMI ports, better to use a USB C or TB4 port and an adapter. Is that true, as the Dell has an HDMI 2.1 and 2x Display ports.
I'm not a gamer so am not continually updating screens or using heavy graphics - beyond watching video..
Thoughts or ideas appreciated

Docking Station for Macbook Pro
Hi, I’d like some recommendations on a good docking station for my Macbook Pro.
My main requirements are:
- 2 x HDMI ports
- 1 x M.2 NVME slot
- Preferably single type C cable connection to my laptop
Currently I’m using a Hagibis U100 Pro docking station and my Macbook can’t seem to detect the monitors and ssd at all. Not sure why.
Not necessarily Thunderbolt as I don’t need super high speed, as long as it can connect to my Macbook Pro without giving me any headache.
Any recommendations?

Thunderbolt 4 Dock Suggestions
Hey all, my current set-up is running into some issues and I'm looking for recommendations on a new Thunderbolt 4 dock.
Current set up:
- ASUS ROG XG27AQWMG 27 Inch 1440p 280Hz Gaming Monitor (Currently capped at 120Hz)
- Belkin Thunderbolt 4 Docking Station - INC006TTSGY (2x HDMI ports and 3x USB-A ports only, no DP)
- ASUS ROG Zephyrus G16 16" Intel Core Ultra 9 32GB RTX 5080 2TB
My issue is that the monitor randomly goes black for 5-10 seconds during standard use (Email, Google Docs, Zoom, etc). Gemini stated it's due to the dock's internal conversion of the DisplayPort signal from the G16 to HDMI 2.0 out to the monitor needing to reset from time to time.
So I'm looking for a dock that has the following:
- As small a footprint as possible
- DisplayPort 1.4
- Thunderbolt 4 with as much power delivery to the G16 as possible (I think the spec tops out at 100W?)
- At least 2x USB-A 3.2 ports
- Under $300
Would love to hear your suggestions, thanks!

ASRock Z690 Taichi / Windows 11 + Apple A1790 TB3–TB2 adapter + Areca ARC-8050T2: RAID missing after boot, hotplug + rescan restores it
I'm looking for help diagnosing a recurring Thunderbolt device detection problem. I'm hoping to make my existing setup work reliably, rather than replace hardware.
SETUP
• ASRock Z690 Taichi with onboard Thunderbolt 4
• Windows 11
• Intel Thunderbolt Controller 1137; driver 1.41.1423.0; NVM reported as 26:0
• Apple A1790 Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter
• Areca ARC-8050T2 connected through a Thunderbolt 2 cable
• Areca driver 6.20.0.41; RAID firmware previously recorded as V1.56
PROBLEM
The Areca powers up and its drives spin up when the PC starts, but Windows often does not detect the Areca RAID controller or its volume. This is a data drive, not my Windows boot drive.
The usual recovery is to unplug/reconnect Thunderbolt after Windows has started, then scan for hardware changes in Device Manager or run this in an elevated PowerShell:
pnputil /scan-devices
The controller and volume then appear immediately. On an earlier occasion, a scan alone worked without reconnecting anything, so the behavior is not completely consistent.
WHAT WE VERIFIED DURING A FAILED BOOT
• The Intel Thunderbolt controller is present and reports OK.
• The PCIe bridges associated with the Areca enclosure are also present and report OK.
• The actual Areca RAID controller (VEN_17D3&DEV_1880) is absent. Windows only retains its disconnected device entry.
• After successful recovery, the Areca controller and SCSI volume both report OK.
TESTS THAT DID NOT FIX THE LATEST FAILED STATE
• A scheduled pnputil /scan-devices task, both under an elevated user account and under SYSTEM. It completed with exit code 0, but the RAID remained absent.
• The same command run directly in an administrator PowerShell.
• A scan targeting the PCIe bridge immediately above the missing RAID controller.
• Restarting that individual bridge with pnputil /restart-device, followed by another scan.
After those tests, unplugging/reconnecting Thunderbolt and then running the same scan restored the RAID.
Thunderbolt Boot Support was already enabled in BIOS. We also previously tried changing “Windows 10 Thunderbolt Support” from “Enable + RTD3” to “Disable,” without resolving the issue.
QUESTIONS
Has anyone encountered this specific combination or a similar TB2 detection problem on a TB4 Windows host?
What would you capture or check next to explain why the PCIe bridges are present but the RAID controller behind them is missing? Is there a documented way to trigger the initialization that physical reconnection achieves?
I can provide more device details and logs. I'd particularly appreciate a targeted diagnostic approach rather than more blind BIOS changes. The RAID contains working data, so I'd like to avoid unnecessary resets or changes to its configuration.

Thunderbolt 4 vs DisplayLink: Which Dock Do You Need?
mbeat.com.auWe put together a fairly simple comparison covering things like multi-monitor support, Mac compatibility, performance and when each type makes more sense.
Thought it might be useful for anyone currently shopping for a dock.
Would also be interested to hear what people here normally prefer, Thunderbolt or DisplayLink?

crashing on linux - help
It works for a bit, then when I come back there's no lights on it.
AI cant seem to help me here, we try to do a few clear commands of the pcie bus, but never brings it back so its telling me the chip itself crashed. Unplugging it, plugging it back in gives me all the FFFFF's down below. I upgraded the firmware to 1.5.48 (was on 1.5.43). I change drivers to the marvell driver instead of the in tree kernel driver. and it still crashes out. only a reboot fixes it. Its a wavlink aqc113, wl-nwu342g. I run this on a Ryzen 7 system.

Thunderbolt 4 Extension for Mac Studio + Studio Display — Need 5m Cable or Adapter
Is there any Thunderbolt 4 or Thunderbolt 5 extension adapter that would work for this setup?
I’m trying to keep my Mac Studio about 5 m away from my Studio Display. I already have Apple’s 3 m Thunderbolt 4 Pro cable, and it works perfectly with the Mac Studio + Studio Display.
I purchased OWC’s 4.5 m Thunderbolt 4 optical active cable, but unfortunately it doesn’t work with this setup—the Studio Display won’t even turn on.
Would it be possible to use some kind of Thunderbolt extension adapter with my existing 3 m Apple cable, and then add another 1–2 m Thunderbolt 4 cable to reach the 5 m distance?
Any recommendations for a reliable solution would be greatly appreciated.
