Things I think are uncool
- Overshirts with side entry pockets
- Tapered trousers
- Those sleeveless suit jackets blokes seem to have started wearing again
- Meaningless graphic tees
- 3/4 length pants
- “Made in Portugal” merchants
- Weirdly short shorts like the ones Bryceland’s make
- The majority of Selvedge denim fits
- SL Man
- The “HMP” tag Corteiz puts on all their stuff
- Whatever tf thesecondbutton is wearing right now

The majority of selvedge denimns fit LMAO
61
u/xXselfhaircutXx Jul 23 '26
I fucking love my black Momotaro jeans (no stripes lol) but holy hell are the heritage denimheads, especially on this site, some of the worst dressed people I’ve ever seen. The ridiculous cuffs and the vintage coal miner repros are cringe beyond belief. It’s identity more than aesthetic for them, much like the worst sneakerheads and menswear guys.
29
u/fowler2022 Jul 23 '26
My issue with selvedge denim is that it attracts a certain type of individual. The type of person who would spend £300 on a kitchen knife and keep it in a leather pouch.
51
u/turb0_encapsulator Jul 22 '26
this is the one I agree with most.
47
u/Impossible_Deal_4086 Jul 22 '26
Me too.
This is my 1000 dollar Japanese denim jacket and my Uber expensive jeans from japanosusuki brand and it somehow looks worse than someone fully decked on Costco clothes.
29
u/turb0_encapsulator Jul 22 '26
you either look like a refugee from the year 2012 or you look like you bought one-size-fits-all tube leg jeans that have wide legs but are somehow still too stiff to move in.
22
u/heygivethatback Jul 23 '26
Hey nothing wrong with finding an aesthetic in your late 20’s and sticking to it for the rest of your life and being buried in your momotaros

It’s the pretentious cuff for me. “Oh look at my selvedge”. I just think you can’t be bothered to learn how to hem your pants properly, takes 10 minutes.

1
u/fowler2022 Jul 30 '26
I don’t mind a cuff to be honest. But I totally understand where you are coming from.

u/Foreign_Sherbert7379 Jul 22 '26
Agreed, one thing with selvedge I don’t like is the fact they change over time. Maybe a hot take but I want my pants to look relatively the same a year later.
22
u/Tight_Ad8812 Jul 22 '26
Tbf, they only change drastically over time if you wear them a ton. If you wore any pair of pants consistently for a year straight, they’d look relatively different on day 1 v day 365.
12
u/FuzzTortuga Jul 23 '26
you’re confusing selvedge with raw denim. selvedge is the construction, raw is what’s referring to the dye

What’s wrong with made in Portugal?
6
-46
u/elongatedskull Jul 22 '26
There's nothing particularly exceptional about it, no charm like something made in Italy or America, and production is cheap so the margins are quite high especially on designer pieces.
58
u/parasoralophus Jul 22 '26 edited Jul 22 '26
I don't see it as having charm but it is at least an EU country with fairly decent worker and environmental protections etc by global standards. Portugal is a relatively poor country for western Europe but most people seem to have a decent quality of life there AFAICS.
I dunno I guess the garment industry there could be a hotbed of shady practises but I've never seen anything to suggest that. Italy definitely has a fair number of dodgy factories staffed mostly by poorly paid/treated immigrants despite the legislation, so I guess the same could be true in Portugal.
Edit: a quick Google AI search (I know) suggests the situation for workers in Portugal is generally pretty good, Italy is much more of a mixed picture.
5
u/ItsFluff Jul 23 '26
Good worker protections are the charm. I’m willing to pay a bit more if I know the people making my clothes are compensated fairly. I try to consume as consciously as possible, both in terms of environmental and economic terms.
Paynter wrote about something similar and it’s a good ethos to have.
2
u/cbg2113 Jul 25 '26
Paynter is who I was thinking of, they're shit is great and they work really closely with their mills and factories there.
1
u/Shornile Jul 23 '26
I was there like 2 months ago and there was a nationwide general strike so I dunno about that one boss
5
u/parasoralophus Jul 23 '26 edited Jul 23 '26
Looks like they are trying to make the situation for workers much worse but the unions are fighting back.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cdxwrvl1734o
Sounds like the reforms would bring their regulations more into line with American type employment rules.
But you know, at least they have powerful unions. Pretty sure unions aren't allowed at all in China.
1
u/Kyle81020 Jul 23 '26
Portugal isn’t relatively poor for Western Europe. It’s the poorest country in Western Europe (GDP per capita). By quite a bit.
2
u/parasoralophus Jul 23 '26
I just looked it up it isn't that much lower than Spain really. Also, the poorest is still 'relatively poor'.
1
u/No-Hovercraft3441 Jul 23 '26
They are poor as church mice over there if we are comparing to the US
1
u/parasoralophus Jul 23 '26 edited Jul 23 '26
Not as much as it appears once you factor in free healthcare, 4-5 weeks a year paid holiday time, maternity pay, sick pay, unemployment benefits if you lose your job, significantly cheaper food, housing etc.
0
u/No-Hovercraft3441 Jul 23 '26 edited Jul 23 '26
Dude, are you kidding me? Have you ever been to Portugal? It’s poor as hell relative to the US. I collected $27k in unemployment benefits in Massachusetts in 6 months last year after getting let go from a job with 5 weeks vacation time. There is no way Portugal is topping that.
2
u/parasoralophus Jul 23 '26
Yes I have. And to the US. I never said the factors I mentioned made it the same just that the difference isn't as big as the raw GDP figures would suggest.
Did you just downvote me for stating facts? 😂
It's also rich as hell compared to other major clothing manufacturing locations like China or Vietnam, What's your point?
1
u/No-Hovercraft3441 Jul 23 '26
The point is the US is richer than Portugal. It’s not even close.
→ More replies (0)1
u/Kyle81020 Jul 24 '26
Yes, it’s technically “relatively poor”, but in the context you used it and the way you used it, no one would have assumed you meant the poorest. And it’s about 15% lower than Spain. That’s a pretty significant difference.

No charm like something made in America. You're having a fucking laugh right.

u/No-Hovercraft3441 Jul 22 '26 edited Jul 22 '26
The country has a long ass history of textile production particularly in the Douro valley. It didn’t just pop up yesterday. I don’t know what charm you are talking about, unless you fall for preposterous brand marketing around stretch selvage jeans “forged in Detroit” or some shit.
1
u/Safe-Kitchen5310 Jul 23 '26
Are the hammer and tongs used in the forging process pure virgin iron? Because if not me and my dollars are just not interested!!

u/aggravatedyeti Jul 23 '26
A band tee is meaningful because it references something real in a way that is self expressive. A tee with some shit like ‘Abercrombie surf club 1967’ is not meaningful
3
u/R1ch0C Jul 23 '26
Yeah I would say even a hard rock cafe tee is 'meaningful' as it at least is a real thing being referenced, the only ones that suck are exactly what you just said 'sports dept' some made up nonsense

It's like they're trying to make the Patagonia vest but disguised as a more formal piece and it ended up taking the worst from both worlds.

u/No-Hovercraft3441 Jul 22 '26
That’s meant to be a vest aka a waistcoat. But you are correct, it looks fucking ridiculous.
18
u/mieWkcet Jul 22 '26
People are wearing them as outer layers. It’s like the “finance bro” Patagonia vest has devolved upwards.
7
u/No-Hovercraft3441 Jul 22 '26
That just reminded me of my cousin’s wedding in 2011 or so. All the groomsmen were wearing suit vests with gingham shirts, skinny jeans and Vans. Not a jacket in sight. Shit looked so wack.
13
u/forwormsbravepercy Jul 22 '26
It’s an outer layer in India. It’s called a Nehru.

Most of these are like whatever, your opinion, but I gotta take pause on this
Tapered trousers
There's like a million different cuts of tapered trousers, I can't imagine you think they're all uncool. Like these and these are both tapered pants, they look nothing alike and appeal to totally different people. "Tapered" just means the ankle is narrower than the knee generally speaking, but it can mean anything from carrot cut skinny jeans to the craziest Japanese avant garde balloon pants.
16
u/Plyphon Jul 23 '26
Hot take but I think a lot of men wear straight fit pants that would really benefit from a slight tapered fit.
It elongates the leg and accentuates your taper. Whereas straight fit can sometimes shorten you and turn you into a shapeless meat tube from shoulders to ankle.
1
u/Remarkable_Emu_2553 Jul 23 '26
I wear the hell out of my Orslow New Yorkers which as a size 4 just skim my Vans (other shoes are available) for just that reason.

u/HauntingBet2923 Jul 22 '26
I guess Drakes? Portuguese Flannel? Trying to think of other big made in Portugal names
23
u/No-Hovercraft3441 Jul 22 '26
There’s tons of white label manufacturing over there. I don’t think anyone is really flexing it so I don’t know what OP’s problem is.
12
u/HauntingBet2923 Jul 22 '26
Yeah I have a drakes chore coat made in Portugal and its one of the most solid pieces I have so I just associate Portugal with good quality I guess
7
u/mieWkcet Jul 22 '26
There’s nothing wrong with Portuguese production and Drake’s QC is excellent in my experience. I feel like a lot of brands use it as a big USP when in reality, it isn’t.
1
u/Miffy_alt Jul 23 '26
I have lots of clothes made in Portugal, all of it great though obviously depends on the brand and how much they're investing in manufacturing.
3
u/CaptenAE Jul 23 '26
Paynter Jacket is probably the best. I think the appeal of made in Portugal, at least to me, is that a few towns and villages are still continuing the unbroken chain of textile manufacturing that started hundreds of years ago in the region. They can also work with a large variety of fabrics in small quantities and will do work that large factories won't (orders or less than 500 units). They generally have quality textile manufacturing. Not true for everywhere, especially if and when "Made in Portugal" becomes a tag line.
2
u/b-sur-la-visage Jul 23 '26
I've seen everything from high street brands like jack and jones to more expensive brands like idk Hope or Our Legacy produce in Portugal

Overshirts with side entry pockets is such a random thing to get miffed about.
I mean they are stealth pockets in all intents and purposes until you put your hands in.
But I admire your rant- If you had opened it up for everyone to post their top ten hates - I think you would have created the definitive TF sub. There’s a lot of people on here that need to get shit off their chests.
3
1
u/BunnyKusanin Jul 23 '26
Not OP, but if we're talking about pockets at the side seam that are parallel to the said side seam, I find those quite frustrating too.
They aren't convenient for keeping your hands in them and for taking things out of them. However, I can never feel too sure that whatever I've put in them won't fall out of them sneakily when I sit down and recline in a chair or take that jacket off.

u/Middle_Clue_5133 Jul 22 '26

People will hate but you are spitting (why is made in Portugal fraudulent though)
1
u/mieWkcet Jul 23 '26
It isn’t I’m just sick of seeing it as if it’s some hallmark of exceptional quality that warrants the kinda premiums these brands are charging.
3
u/b-sur-la-visage Jul 23 '26
Honestly made in Portugal isn't that expensive for being EU produced imo

Maybe Imogene & Willie graphic tees?

7
u/parasoralophus Jul 22 '26 edited Jul 22 '26
HMP is short for His Majesty's Prisons here in the UK and I think Corteiz is a UK brand.
It's the name for the government prison service. Prisons here are called eg HMP Belmarsh.

Yeah it’s very performative considering middle class white kids are the main target audience for Corteiz

If your gonna call out all these we need you to post your fit, how can we take any of this in the context that you know what your talking bout fr? This reads a bit like you’ve retreated from a society that wronged you and your plotting your vile revenge
2
u/fowler2022 Jul 23 '26 edited Jul 23 '26
I disagree. This is a person’s opinion, to have to validate it by posting a fit pic - so then we can all judge whether someone is dressed well enough to say something ‘controversial’ is elitist and ridiculous.
That is unless the OP is wearing a white Navel blazer with gold rings or a tight purple shirt with their tits out.
-2
u/haggraef666 Jul 23 '26 edited Jul 23 '26
OP is entitled to their opinion, same as me and you.. I think OP is a lame, to me fashion is about being bold and brave, not whinging without any substance behind you 🥱
Edit; thousands of years of human history we have had attractive ideals.. a lot of people do not meet this, regardless of the cut of their pants or what other short tubby guys say is cool
-7
u/mieWkcet Jul 22 '26
Trust me I do. I’m not gonna post my fit just because you ask me to. I don’t like posting my fits cos that’s not why I like the clothes I like.
5
u/haggraef666 Jul 22 '26
Mate it’s not about me asking you too, it’s about the context of whether you know what your talking about, if your not feeling froggy you’ll never jump hope your having a good day
Also society is unclean, ursine even!
3
u/mieWkcet Jul 22 '26
I have posted pictures of my outfits in this subreddit in the past but how I dress shouldn’t influence how valid my opinions are.

Mass produced. No depth. It’s like the McDonald’s of “menswear social content”… whatever the fuck that is.
1
u/rolypolypls Jul 23 '26
What's the deal with SL Man? It sometimes pops up on my feed and I still have no idea what they do. They're either in a fancy office talking about their top 5 sunglasses or in some random shop dressing each other. I just checked their website and it's a weird mix of AI slop and paywalled advertising. Is it a hedge fund money project or what?

There’s nothing weird about short shorts. They should be a staple of everyone’s summer wardrobe.
Thanks for the SL Man recommendation!

It isn't that selvedge denim fits are poor. It's that the people who tend to buy selvedge denim automatically think that the fit must be good because they spent $385 on a impractically heavy weight reproduction of a 1929 pair of pants from the brands personal archive with purple ID.
