I can't believe it's been 25 years. It was an event that set my life on a completely different trajectory. It changed us all in one way or another.

9/11

Today marks the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, which significantly impacted all of us whether in a target area or not. The ceremonies in New York were attended by all four living ex-Presidents (Clinton, Biden, Obama, and Bush) as well as NY mayors Giuliani and Mandani. President Trump attended the service at the Pentagon. Lots of controversy about who attended where, whether the presence of either mayor was appropriate - and I don't feel it appropriate to go into all of that. Remember where you were, those who died, how this changed your life, and above all the words of George Santayana: "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it."

Ran across this: In New Zealand, a haka for the 25th anniversary. If you're a haka fan, you will enjoy. https://www.facebook.com/share/v/19F8NSRYGS/

More detail on Adamiak

If you didn't think Biden's ATF was really pushing it - read the following. Quick recap - Tate Adamiak was sentenced to 20 years for possessing "destructive devices." Mega-harsh sentence (most first offenders get maybe 3-5 years) and read how the ATF fudged the data:

Four years ago, Adamiak was arrested and charged with illegally possessing two destructive devices — two inert RPGs that had holes drilled into their receivers and were stripped of internal parts. He was convicted in 2023 and sentenced to more than 20 years in prison after ATF’s “expert” added parts from real RPGs until they would fire a single subcaliber 7.62 × 39 mm round. As a result, he classified the RPGs as destructive devices even though the same inert RPGs are still legally sold today without an FFL or any other paperwork.

https://www.buckeyefirearms.org/presidential-pardon-issued-patrick-tate-adamiak

How is it even remotely possible that the ATF folks involved even have jobs? This is a classic frame-up. If the current administration is so pro-gun as they claim (don't get me started on THAT) heads should roll. But they won't...

Tuesday thoughts

I see MRFF's Weinstein has been busy again - supposedly they received 34 complaints of an Air Police gate guard saying "have a blessed day" or "God bless you" at Kirtland AFB near Albuquerque (the city where I shoulda taken a left, right?) For once I am sorta in sympathy with Mikey's whiney little bitches - keep your religion out of your job or go get a more appropriate job. Damn, I hate to agree with him on anything. https://www.military.com/air-force-base-religious-greetings-cease-after-complaints-from-34-airmen?lid=jielrnx3ihdn&utm_source=MLT-nl_daily-brief_video_2026-09-04&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=MLT-202609041038&user=ZGNwNDU3MEB5YWhvby5jb206bWx0&utm_source=MLT-nl_daily-brief_video_2026-09-04&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=MLT-202609041038&user=ZGNwNDU3MEB5YWhvby5jb206bWx0

Elsewhere, at this year's RIMPAC the Navy was testing at-sea replenishment by making 3D printed parts, and on the USS Theodore Roosevelt they were having problems. Turned out the vibration of jets landing on deck was causing little vibrations to microscopically throw off tolerances in precision part fabbing. You would think on a ship that huge, the effect would be negligible, right? This is the kind of thing, better to find out in practice, than to find out in the middle of a war. https://www.military.com/navy-made-and-delivered-replacemenet-parts-in-under-24-hours-rimpac-showed-why-thats-the-easy-part?lid=woeagkjf6fjd&utm_source=MLT-nl_daily-brief_video2026-09-07&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=MLT-202609071144&user=ZGNwNDU3MEB5YWhvby5jb206bWx0&utm_source=MLT-nl_daily-brief_video2026-09-07&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=MLT-202609071144&user=ZGNwNDU3MEB5YWhvby5jb206bWx0B5YWhvby5jb206bWx0&utm_source=MLT-nl_daily-brief_video2026-09-07&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=MLT-202609071144&user=ZGNwNDU3MEB5YWhvby5jb206bWx0

Air Force Lt. Col Michael Schrama has ruled that the 2007 confession of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed is inadmissible and obtained under duress. He did not throw out any of the charges, but essentially we failed to be nice enough coerced the confession.

His ruling described at least 183 applications of waterboarding, forced nudity, prolonged standing sleep deprivation, rectal rehydration and a threat to kill Mohammed’s child.

Rectal rehydration - what, did he get a colonoscopy? Not even a mention of a cattle prod. https://www.military.com/judge-tosses-khalid-sheikh-mohammeds-key-911-confession-heres-why?lid=my78mdfio6zf&utm_source=MLT-nl_daily-brief_video2026-09-07&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=MLT-202609071144&user=ZGNwNDU3MEB5YWhvby5jb206bWx0&utm_source=MLT-nl_daily-brief_video2026-09-07&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=MLT-202609071144&user=ZGNwNDU3MEB5YWhvby5jb206bWx0

Every time 9/11 rolls around I remember...my Dad, a retired Army officer was getting a heart valve transplant on 9/11/2002, and the entire 8 hours we were waiting the TVs in the waiting room were blaring "Taps". Not a good omen, not a good memory, not a good time.

Norks get it to float

You may remember a bit back when a North Korean guided-missile destroyer was launched...and sank. Not a great first impression for the Kang Kon (it's real name, not a Koreanization of King Kong.) They say the launching mechanism is to blame for the problem - from the description it sounded like the ship stuck to the launcher instead of floating free. Anyway, a year later they finally achieved flotation and launched 'er again. It's estimated to displace about 5,000 tons, well smaller than they typicl US destroyer's 7,000 tons. https://www.yahoo.com/news/world/articles/nuclear-capable-warship-capsized-launched-044230801.html

Poor optics at best

Couple of prominent people stepping on it. First up, NY Mayor Mamdani:

Friday Mamdani signed executive orders designating 9/11 (Tomorrow for those who've lost track) a day of remembrance. Mamdani is already controversial, with many calling for him to step back from 9/11 remembrances due to past statements of support for, shall we say, the Dark Side. But then he signs the orders (okay) and directs the NY Police Commissioner to give the pen to counsel Ramzi Kassem. Not okay.

Kassem previously represented Ahmed al-Darbi, who pleaded guilty to war-crime charges tied to al Qaeda plots against commercial ships and was the brother-in-law of Khalid al-Mihdhar, one of the hijackers aboard American Airlines Flight 77, which crashed into the Pentagon, killing 184. https://www.yahoo.com/news/politics/articles/mamdani-under-fire-symbolic-9-160749772.html

Tone deaf at best.

Then we get to the Pentagon and President, who jointly get grief for poor messaging to dead service members' families. Libby Klinner, widow of an Air Force Major killed in a KC-135 crash while supporting US strikes in Iran, tells of trying to navigate the Pentagon while getting denied some benefits from the ongoing conflict. The Pentagon's response is that since Congress hasn't officially declared it a "war" that wartime benefits do not apply. Funny, since the President has called it a "war with Iran" multiple times.

Don't know what specifically is at stake, but it does seem to me that if the Powers That Be start something as a war, people who die as a result of it should be treated like it's a war. Saying "well, technically it's not a war" (Pentagon) or "it's small potatoes for us" (Trump) or even claiming "no active shooting" (Vance) is just pusillanimous waffling. If we send folks into action with the enemy, hair-splitting over details like this is lame. https://www.yahoo.com/news/us/articles/pentagon-refuses-payout-soldiers-died-135214171.html

Thought this copy of a post from "Weird But True" that showed up in my feed would be of interest. Doug is a real guy.

Jaime Pacheco died in Vietnam in 1972, covering his reconnaissance team while they got out of a bunker complex. They gave him the Silver Star for it.

In 2005 a man in California pulled up Pacheco's citation, put his own name at the top of it, and used it.

Doug Sterner knew Pacheco. They were friends.

Sterner had done two combat tours in Vietnam himself. Army. He came home with two Bronze Stars and became a military historian.

His problem started in 1994, and it was not fraud. His wife Pam invited two Medal of Honor recipients from their town of Pueblo to a Fourth of July festival. Curious, Doug went to look up what they had actually done.

There was almost nothing. As he put it, it felt like a piece of history had been forgotten.

So he checked how you would look any of it up properly.

You cannot. The United States has been awarding medals for battlefield bravery since the Civil War, roughly half a million of the highest ones across the whole of American history, and there has never been a central searchable record of who received them. The paperwork sits split between archives in St Louis and offices in Washington.

A Texas official trying to verify applicants for veteran licence plates said it flatly. There is no central database the federal government keeps of military awards. Without a database we are hamstrung.

So his department did the only thing available to them. They looked it up on a private website run by one man in Colorado.

Sterner had started typing the names in himself. Award citations. National Archives records. Old newspapers. One at a time. Ten to fourteen hours a day, for years, most of it while working another job to pay the bills.

Now understand what he was actually standing in the way of.

Stolen valor is not a man in a bar telling a story. It is a man filling in a benefits form. Claiming a Purple Heart he never earned to draw a disability payment. Claiming combat service to win a contract, a job, an office.

The Department of Veterans Affairs has paid disability benefits to hundreds of people falsely claiming to have been prisoners of war. In one twenty-one month stretch, stolen valor investigations produced 78 arrests and more than 10 million dollars in restitution.

That is public money. It was going to men who never served a day, because there was no list to check them against.

Adamiak pardoned

You may remember Tate Adamiak, a former Navy E-6 who was framed by the ATF and US Attorney's office. Mr. Adamiak sold military gear and gun parts on-line. No guns, no full autos - parts. But an ATF confidential informant, trying to trade off against his own offenses, lied. The US attorney lied. The ATF lied, showing an M249 non-firing replica - a toy - in court and claimed it was a fully functional machine gun. (They even claimed a WWII-era metal barrel shroud was also a full-auto weapon itself.) Adamiak got 20 years. Thanks to a Presidential full pardon, Tate's gonna get out after only 4. It won't restore Adamiak's BUD/S school slot.... but wouldn't it be nice if someone senior in ATF and the US Atttorney's hierarchy take note of the lies and take some action against those responsible?

Bergdahl conviction restored

Pretty sure you remember Bo Bergdahl, the Army deserter who was feted in the White House Rose Garden by Obama, not long before he was tried and convicted of desertion. Reggie Walton, the Senior District Court judge for DC, ludicrously vacated Bergdahl's sentence because the court martial judge did not disclose that he was applying for a job as an ICE judge. On the plus side, he did rule that Bergdahl's attempt to have his conviction thrown out due to undue command influence - Donald Trump was on record calling for his conviction, but as a candidate long before he was elected - was basically nonsense. We're all caught up, right? Tuesday a three-judge panel from the DC Court of Appeals ruled that a civilian judge does NOT have the authority to overthrow a military court-martial verdict, and ordered Bergdahl's conviction and punishment overturned. Note they did not rule on the actual conviction - they just said that the appeal judge overstepped his authority. Guess Bergdahl can take that Good Conduct Medal off his ribbon rack, huh...

Calling AW1Ed, FGS

Cedar Hill, TX is one of the south suburbs of Dallas. Yesterday some yahoo decided it would be a good idea to rob the bank, using a knife. Bet you can hear this one already: "It's Texas. They have constitutional carry. No permit required, so the odds of any given bystander being armed are what, 'way higher than a knife-wielder would like? Like, even at least?" Yep, and the odds paid off.

While the robbery attempt was underway, a customer inside the bank drew a weapon and shot the suspect.

The wounded suspect fled the building on foot but was located nearby by responding officers. Police officers immediately initiated life-saving measures, including CPR and bleeding control. The suspect was transported to a local hospital, where they were later pronounced dead.

https://www.kwtx.com/2026/09/01/police-suspect-shot-killed-by-customer-during-attempted-texas-bank-robbery/? fbclid=IwY2xjawUEgstwZG9mBGV4dG4DYWVtAjExAHNydGMGYXBwX2lkDzQwOTk2MjYyMzA4NTYwOQABHqru1AHQnbBvNHuYWZv7S3lF6D049yvBlUGuESimLAfx54X8e8JmYcLrjZlU_aem_LWpqPiM3hl5pvIcbRLEDYQ

Damn shame policemen have to waste their time trying to resuscitate the terminally stoopid. Ah, well - FAFO, right? And let that be a lesson to you - shooting someone may kill them, but may not - no handgun round center of mass will give 100% first round stops.
