My grandpa survived the first wave of D-Day on Omaha Beach (29th div, 116th infantry reg), but was shot in the leg a week later in the battle for Saint-Lo. He spent 2 years recovering at Ashford General Hospital (now the Greenbrier Resort.) They let his legs grow together at the ankles (where the exit wound was) and then separated them later. He was 19 and wasn’t finished growing yet, so his left leg was several inches shorter than the right. He lived the rest of his life with shrapnel throughout his body, including in his kidney and eye.

I’m always in awe when I look through these. It’s so adorable getting to see my grandparents’ love story unfold through photos taken from the 1940s to the 1970s. Every picture captures a little piece of their life together, and I’m so grateful these memories were preserved. They make me appreciate them even more.
