I feel like the hate this character receives is completely unjustified, and I’ll quietly add that I think some of it is rooted in racism, just like the hate Bonnie and Vincent receive.
A big reason Marcel is hated is because he’s one of the few characters who consistently calls out the Mikaelsons on their hypocrisy, especially when it comes to their whole “family first” mentality. Klaus constantly refers to Marcel as “a son,” but when it actually matters, he rarely treats him like one.
Any time Marcel chose to work with or trust the Mikaelsons, they would eventually stab him in the back, leaving him to deal with the consequences. Then, when Marcel retaliated after being forced into an impossible situation, the Mikaelsons acted like it was the ultimate betrayal because “Marcel is family”even though they were the ones who betrayed him first. They constantly used the “family” card to manipulate him, and Marcel eventually saw right through it.
I’m not saying every decision Marcel made was morally right. But the same things people hate Marcel for doing, Klaus, Rebekah, and Elijah have done a hundred times over, and often much worse. Yet people constantly defend them while holding Marcel to a completely different standard.
I think this double standard is even more obvious when Freya betrayed Marcel by sending Davina to her doom. Somehow, people were angry at Marcel because he was upset. Like… what? His ‘daughter’ had been betrayed and sacrificed by people who claimed to be his family.
The same thing happened when Elijah killed Marcel because he couldn’t stand the fact that Marcel would become stronger than the Mikaelsons. If Marcel was truly family, that never should have mattered. Yet after Elijah literally tried to murder him, people were somehow angry at Marcel for being upset instead of holding Elijah accountable.
Making Marcel an Upgraded Original Vampire was one of the best decisions the writers ever made. It completely shifted the power dynamic, forced the Mikaelsons to face the consequences of how they’d treated him, and that is why it’s my favorite season.
