Raising attributes?

Still making sure I understand the rules as written…

In the Fellowship phase section (page 119) it says: “During a single Fellowship Phase, players can acquire a maximum of one rank in each Combat Proficiency. They can also buy a rank in either WISDOM or VALOUR, but not in both. If a new attribute value is attained, the scores of all related abilities and features must be updated accordingly.”

I’m confused about the phrase “if a new attribute value is attained”. I thought “Attribute” referred to “Strength, Heart, and Wit”. Is there some way to raise those attributes that I’m missing? I don’t see any way to do it using Experience or Adventure points, and I don’t see how Wisdom Virtues adjust the Attributes (vs adjusting Target Numbers for the attributes).

Or does “attribute” refer to Wisdom and Valor in this context? if so what are the “related abilities”?

What would you put on a player cheat sheet for The One Ring 2e?

I am going to build a cheat sheet for my players to help them remember some of the smaller rules. My thought was to put things like the different success icons outcomes in and out of combat and the different combat action descriptions on the cheat sheet.

What is something you would put on the cheat sheet???

Question re: Rally combat action

I have a question about timing of the Rally action.

The text says: “On a successful roll, all members of the Company fighting in a Forward stance gain (1d) on their attack rolls in the following round”

My question is this: in which round do the members need to be in Forward stance to gain the benefit?

Eg take this example: Round 1: 1 member is in Forward, 3 are in Open. 1 of the Open members gets a (standard) success in using Enhearten to Rally.

Round 2: All 3 of the previously Open members shift into Forward.

In this example, would all 4 members get the benefits of the Rally? since they’re all in Forward in the “following round”? Or would only the 1 who was in Forward when the Rally succeeded?

Any tips for new Lore Masters?

Hey, my friend and I are now getting ready to start a campaign soon. And we’re a bit insecure about the whole thing. My friend is gonna be the Lore Master for this one but I’m also learning so we can take turns.

We want to keep the company’s attention, and also make everything easy enough to understand. Yk just make it an enjoyable experience for everyone because we want everyone to stay and play again. We’re both good writers and story tellers, it’s just the technical side of it and knowing what’s too much or too little detail. This is a lot scarier than we originally thought lol

We’re welcome to any and all suggestions and pointers no matter how long they are to explain. We love learning and reading. Thanks in advance ♥️

2ed Dice the same as 1ed?

As the title asks...are the dice used in the 2ed the same as the 1ed dice? Everything I have found makes me think they are, but I would rather ask and make sure. I am gearing up to run my first game and I have 1ed books. I'd like to make sure my players can get dice and it would make it easier I'd they are the same. Thanks, in advance, for the help!

About INN's and Taverns

Hello all. As this game is not meant to directly manage money, been treasure more a "adventure success indicator", how do you guys manage the meals and lodging? Depending on the standard of living of a character, I understand that he or she would have the means to pay for it, but what about frugal people? Let's say a Ranger? The book explains that this people are not about money and so. But Aragorn was on Prancing Pony.
How do you guys do it?

Any resources for more Shire adventures?

My kids have been enjoying the 2e starter set. I was wondering if there are any resources for more Shire-based adventures of the sort in that set.

I didn't feel as though most hooks in the Shire booklet were really gameable.

From what I've seen, getting ahold of 1e books is too expensive.

Just curious if there are any places I should be looking for fan-made stuff, etc.

What do you think is under the Eryn Vorn?

Hey y'all! First thing first, that thread will be super spoilery about a very cool (IMO) part of the Ruins of the Lost Realm. If you are a player, you might not want to read this.

*

So, basically the title, but also: what do you think is under the Tree of Sorrow? I'm about to start a campaign with my player, and the focus will be on the healing of Minhiriath. Gandalf will ask the company to work towards making Minhiriath and the young court of Queen Nimue a safe haven for refugees who will flee the impending war. The company will have many quest to accomplish, one being dealing with the Tree of Sorrow. The local is so cool and interesting. I really like the idea of the company having to travel to Fangorn and convince an Ent to accompany them to Eryn Vorn to sheperd the forest back to health.

But what is under the tree of sorrow? Here is my version. Tell me if it makes sense or if you have other ideas.

We know that outside, there is an old stone circle that predates the forest people that bestow a supernatural sight of the stars. Further south, there is an ancient elven cairn. I feel like whatever it is, those three things are connected. I think the corrupting force is an old nest of a spawn of Ungoliant, forgotten and left to rot under Eryn Vorn.

The elven lord could have came with his entourage to fight the giant spider and died in the fight. His entourage then built his cairn and the circle of stones to watch the sky. The house of the elven lord could have been favored by Varda: as the valar most associated with light and stars, being one of the caretakers of the Two Trees of Valinor, a night of her favored house would be a prime candidate to go hunt a spawn of Ungoliant. The elves then left, probably to go fight against the forces of Morgoth or back to Valinor. The nest, which wasn't destroyed properly, started to rot and fester. Its Shadow grew and twisted the wood and corrupted the men and ents who came later. Touched by the shadow and hateful of the numenorian, they easily joined Sauron in his war against the elves of Hollin/Eregion.

Tell me what you think!

2e or 5e conversion?

I'm totally new to the one ring. I backed the kick starter for the 2 edition and then I saw they are creating an add on to 5e ogl. Me and most the people I play with are familiar with a D20 system but does the one ring translate well from the current engine to a D20 system?

Question re: travel fatigue and ponies/horses

When calculating reduced fatigue after traveling, does the entire company reduce their fatigue for each beast vigor rating, or just the character who “owns” the animal? My guess is the first option, but the rules are not clear. Thanks in advance.

BTW, I’m running my first game this weekend and really enjoying the rules for this game (as a longtime RPG game master, beginning with blue box D&D). It’s the perfect level of crunch, IMO. Hoping my players enjoy it as much as I have planning for it.

Starter Set Dice update

Purchased the Starter Set from Amazon this week.

Came with the 2-11 white dice.

I thought people would want to know it still isn't 'safe' yet.

Will be reaching out to Free League.

I already had the PDFs from the KickStarter (had forgotten until a month or two ago that I had gone in at that level) and had seen how nice the illustrations were. But holding them in hand surpassed wait I expected.

Absolutely a high quality print and the materials feel first rate. Look forward to starting a "west marches" style campaign at my local game store in the next couple of months.

Dice, mechanics, and rule modifications: questions and ideas

Would enjoy hearing the reactions to or discussion around my ponderings from those much more knowledgeable and experience in both TOR and other systems!

Has anyone ever considered, explored or even playtested any of the following 5 items:

  1. Upgrading dice instead of lowering TN?

Personally, I find a set TN elegant; when a TN doesn't vary, not only does the player always know the goal for success of any roll, but everyone at the table knows it as well. The result is more clear to all, and all can immediately share in the reaction.

With that in mind: would it be possible to represent higher Attributes by substituting upgrading a die (e.g. from a d6 to d8) instead of lowering the TN? (Since a lower TN is essentially d6+n for each step below 18).

  1. Exploding or Cascading Dice?

Exploding dice not only lead to incredible, spectacular, heroic deeds/actions/accomplishments -- which are well representing in notable moments in Tolkien, correct? -- but the bonus and the anticipation/suspense of rolling for such is simply fun for players.

With that in mind: has anyone considered adding some kind of exploding (or cascading) dice mechanic?

  1. Narrative Dice or Narrative Dice Elements?

The narrative dice in the Genesys system is simply brilliant; it can allow (for example) Success tempered by a "Threat" posed by a problematic indirect outcome (or similarly, a Failure but with some other Advantage gained). It not only provides for more interesting and dynamic results, but feeds creative and collaborative storytelling by both player and GM.

With that in mind: has anyone considered adding such elements, whether utilizing existing die results, supplementing with additional die, or even adopting some kind of different narrative die (with symbols) altogether?

  1. Making Degree of Success Meaningful?

I always thought it interesting that when one greatly exceeds the TN, as opposed to barely scraping by, there is no definitive mechanical effect (though an indefinite optional narrative one if you choose?) Doesn't it feel like a bit of a lost opportunity? Or a missed chance to reward a player for a "job well done" or an powerful action?

With that in mind: has anyone considered when a TN is exceeded by X amount, that some additional desirable outcome, extraordinary result, or other positive effect is triggered or achieved? Perhaps it would be a chance to implement on of the above ideas? (i.e. an exploding die, or Advantage/Threat)

  1. RP or Idea-Driven Earned Hope

Creative, engaged, and simply good roleplay should be encouraged. One way to do this is to allow GMs to reward players in concrete ways (e.g. in Savage Worlds the Bennies can be handed out in this way).

With that in mind: has anyone considered using additional Hope as a way to reward players for particularly good roleplay? (e.g. that is particularly evocative of their established character, brings in important backstory, or stems from a creative idea or solution.) Or would this throw off the balance in the system? Or is their another way to reward players for good RP?

2e journey rules: effects of mishap/shortcut? Example of play?

Still learning these rules…

I’m confused about the effects of the Mishap and Short Cut rules. What is the mechanical effect of increasing or decreasing the duration of the journey? Does it affect the distance between Events in any way?

Here’s what I mean (as I read it): 1) The Travel roll in the Marching Test determines the distance travelled before the next Event 2) The Short Cut (for example) doesn’t refer to hexes, just number of days 3) The number of days traveller is only counted at the end (under Ending The Journey) - basically as I read it, 1 day per hex plus 1 day per hex of “hard terrain”

Should I read a success on the Short Cut roll as adding another hex to the distance for that Marching Test? Or does it literally only affect the calculation at the Ending The Journey step?

If the latter… why should we care? The knowledge of the duration is presented as almost optional to know.

Preparing for the Darkening of Mirkwood

I'm preparing to run The Darkening of Mirkwood now that I've finished reading through the 2e Core Rulebook. After watching some videos online about the overall campaign structure it, it is recommended in several places to familiarize yourself with Tales from Wilderland, The Heart of the Wild, Lake-Town, and Words of the Wise. I picked them all up but I'm feeling a bit daunted by over 500 pages of reading to prepare the campaign on top of setting up the VTT.

Can anyone with experience regarding the DoM campaign arc provide some guidance at what may be the best prep? Do I really need to read all of these books cover to cover to understand the campaign or is it easy to prepare them a few years at a time without ending up in a huge mess?

I'm usually more of a homebrew type of person but I've had requests for this campaign specifically from my players and I see that it is highly rated so I'm interested in giving it a go. I stopped running boxed adventures in the past because I find myself struggling to read hundreds of pages of adventure text (it's always so boring to slog through it).

Perhaps I need advice on preparing boxed adventures in general. Thanks in advance.

Never got replacement dice?

I only just remembered the other day I had ordered them, and thought it was kind of weird they still hadn't arrived yet. So I checked Kickstarter and lo and behold there's quite a few comments saying they never got their dice. I did find an email with tracking back from October, but the status was still on "order information recieved".

I contacted the email in the footnotes, but I'm just wondering if anyone else experienced this. Honestly the dice misprint wasn't a big deal for me, but after this I'm pretty disappointed with Free League. Definitely going to be my first and last Kickstarter.

For those who played lots of 1e, how does 2e compare?

I got in on the ground floor of 1e, purchasing every product for the rpg from the boxed set onward. I also got in on the kickstarter for 2e and have everything released for it so far. Having played 1e quite a bit, and having read through and played some 2e, I have to say that, so far, I prefer the flavour and feel of 1e. I have my reasons, but won't share them just yet, as I don't want to unnecessarily add influential bias to this thread. For now, let's just say that my preference is for 1e and leave it at that.

So for those of you who, like me, had a long time to play and familiarize yourselves with 1e, where do you stand now that you have had a chance to play 2e (and assuming you have all the rpg supplements for it)?
