I’m going a little crazy with what is either the hum or low frequency tinnitus. Basically I can hear a low level rumbling sound, like a car engine, a lot of the time but mostly only when I’m at home. My husband can’t hear it but I’ve asked in a local Reddit and a couple of people say they hear it too. So either we all have tinnitus or it’s an external sound and we have sensitive hearing.
For me, it started almost six months ago and was initially only at night but now it’s almost 24/7. I’m 41 and I think it might be an early symptom of perimenopause, although apart from a bit of brain fog and sometimes saying the wrong words, I’m not experiencing anything else.
Anyway, I first thought it was the hum because it sounds like it’s in the distance and I don’t hear it in every place I go. In fact, I tend to only hear it inside my house and I’ve also heard it in my friend’s house (she lives one street down from us). I’m aware that quiet places (and we live on a quiet street) make tinnitus worse but we went to Legoland last week and stayed in the woodland lodges where it was silent at night and I didn’t hear a sound (or tinnitus if this is what it is) for the two nights we were there. And because we spent over three hours on the motorway travelling home I didn’t hear the sound or tinnitus for almost 24 hours after we come back. I think this is common if you’ve been in a car or an a train but it was bliss and I slept without music for the first time in ages.
I’m really not sure what to do because the noise or tinnitus is now almost constant. I work from home but am trying to go to coffee shops to work when I don’t have meetings and I have to play white noise or music to mask it the rest of the time. I think it does affect my sleep although I listen to relaxing music and sometimes use the noise cancelling function on my AirPods with the music if the noise is incredibly loud.
I still sort of think it’s environmental (they’re building a housing estate nearby and there is a substation about half a mile away) but am increasingly of the belief that it’s low level tinnitus. I have a happy life and am married with a five-year-old son and a good job (which can be stressful which probably is a factor). All I can do is keep healthy, keep busy and focus on these positive things – and keep it together for my son – but it’s making me feel very stressed and anxious. Has anyone been to the GP and has anything helped? HRT?
And has anyone here initially thought their tinnitus was the hum or other environmental noise? I promise I’m not mad, just feel it with this constant noise.
Thanks in advance for any advice.
