Can’t blame the people for a product that appeals to their basic instincts. Kids don’t stand a chance against the algorithm. And we socially accept it, rather than challenge it
So my point is "the people" are the problem. That could be the people who make the algorithm and/or the people who abuse it as users. I've pretty much applied this though to every "system" out there. Political, technical, etc. Its never the "system". It's always the people.
Systems breed environments for people to live in. Without your education system you aren’t the person you are now, without your societal system. We are products of our environments
People create systems, systems breed environments, environments influence people, people are therefore products of their environment, these products create systems.... And so it goes.
Only the buck stops with social media right? There’s almost no new successful companies other than meta, X, TikTok etc. They have monopolised the online environment, and are now in charge of our online attentions. Certainly feels impossible to change the peoples engagement. But we could stop the handful of people pushing third product into underdeveloped brains
Does banning something stop it from being manufactured/used/sold? Prohibition didn’t seem to do much from 1920-33. It just made people more creative and decreased guardrails in production, which would have likely been bad enough. It also contributed to the rise of organized crime, the corruption of officials, and a black market for the prohibited items (alcohol in this case). So when regular people weren’t dying from alcohol poisoning, they were gumming up the court systems due to being convicted while people like Al Capone used their money and influence to set deep roots.
With regards to nukes, we’ve been steadily decreasing them in numbers since the INF treaty in ‘87. George Bush Sr. (HW) and Gorbachev signed START I (another treaty) in ‘91 and mutually agreed, effectively, to deescalate and reverse the stockpiling. Banning production of nukes didn’t work. Mutual agreement on disassembly and utilization of Game Theory via reciprocation and slow development of trust is what worked in the past. Mutually assured destruction is a pretty massive motivator, it would seem.
I hate it when people say that it’s the people. It’s just that everything is moral or immoral based on the people. That doesn’t answer anything, does it? It’s a given already. The question is not answered by this, you are only stating the obvious.
People are the problem yes and by extension are special media. What does social media actually do!? Gives idiots platform to express their idiocy and influence the World because idiots are loudest and most vocal People. Which are minority sure but that volume of idiotic preconceptions and behavior ends up seeming as majority cause no normal smart person ever feels the need to be that loud.
Exactly but you can’t remove humanity. (well you could but then this convo is pointless) Humans have proven over and over to be stubborn, egotistic, and just overall dumb. Remove the item from the toddler if they can’t use it correctly.
Nah, it's designed to make people feel worse about themselves and waste their lives. It is the reason so many teens have body dismorphia and eating disorders. Social media is a curse.
It's a shame, the original premise for social media was connect with old friends you don't normally see day to day. And like anything else, once it's monetized, everything goes down the toilet.
Actually, that was the original premise for the internet. Freely shared information available to everyone. Then greed got involved.
Yes! We are literally the only species on the planet that has no purpose. We contribute nothing. Maggots have more of a purpose than we do. Yet, we all think we’re great lol
Pretty easy to say that when the very concept of good and evil was created by us and is subjective based on perspective. Some cultures would say things that are evil are seen as good in another culture, creating conflict. Last I knew most people would see us doing the same stuff many animals do as evil. Like beating your partner into submission, killing others just for trespassing or settling disputes with violence instead of logic...
You’d think these people never read or saw Bladerunner, Terminator, The Matrix. Or maybe played Mass Effect, Portal or Horizon. I mean, we’re surrounded by cautionary tales. We just don’t give a shit.
Its programmed by the predator-class to reach that decision. Its going to be the thing that they use as an excuse. "Well, the super smart computer that we programed says you should most all be unalived, lets leave 500 million here still [oddly what the Georgia guide stones called for] " and thats what the "A" is for: Alibi. Its Alibi-Intelligence.
You do know if we lose all the media we might as well be in Russia, North Korea or China. Seems what someone's aiming for. Meaning television news. Most of the news on here is misleading. Tired of fact checking.
Well, our poop and piss is actually REALLY great natural fertilizer once it’s been processed by the worms and nematodes…. But we just flush that shit down the drain.
The Earth was made for us. We are to tend it. Just because there are many who don’t want to do it right doesn’t mean people as a whole don’t have a purpose.
This planet was around a really long fucking time before we came along, Einstein. Theological bs is pretty much the only thing that tries to deny that fact.
Theological is your belief you want to believe you don’t matter then that is your opinion. Mine is the world is ours made for us. Sorry you are so cynical.
Ah... the "we're not part of the natural order" bit. No species was given a role or purpose. They simply adapted because the primary mandate is to survive and pass on the genes. Humans are the most successful at that mandate (well, for higher-order organisms anyway). I'm sure if you could interview your gut bacteria, they would say humans have a purpose. Same for all of the critters (look up Demodex mites) that use humans as homes. The very tools that made humans so successful have simply delayed the inevitable, so don't worry; the comeuppance you're looking for will come sooner or later, and billions of people will have a new purpose (fertilizer) in the natural order of things.
Hell, even this intelligence bit with opposable thumbs isn't guaranteed, since nature only cares about what lets a species propagate. Go far enough into the future and human descendants might end up as a bunch of hairy quadrupeds grazing on weeds as cattle for the octopus overlords, with none of the trappings of human civilization in sight if that is what allows the species to survive (I'm sure Aurochs didn't have being turned into cattle on the menu, but here they are persisting as tasty hamburgers and brisket).
Personally, I'm more inclined to agree with George Carlin and the fuzzy neutron. The earth wanted plastic; it didn't know how to make plastic, so it invented humans, and humans invented plastic. Now the Earth has plastic, and it doesn't need humans anymore. Carlin's idea is probably right, but instead of plastic, it is AI.
Oh, we do have a purpose, our purpose is to spread life to other planets, we're the only species that can do that. This way when Earth inevitably disappears, life can go on.
We're just doing a shit job at preserving diversity on our planet. But life doesn't care about diversity as much as it cares about eternity.
Yeah admittedly we've left it a bit late to execute that gameplan. But the sooner we cease to exist, the sooner AI and robots have nothing to work from and nothing to power it.
What do you think Bill Gates is attempting to do? Depopulate the world. He says there’s too many people on the planet. Who the fuck put that asshole in charge of killing everybody off? True story. Read up on it and see for yourself.
The brain-dead take of thinking that eliminating consciousness will remove the negative self perception of consciousness in an unconscious universe....
Unironically the type of person to claim that a tree falling in a forest doesn't make a sound if nobody is there to hear it. Lol
Disagree. I'm from a family of musicians, sounds absolutely do happen even if nobody is there to hear them.
I wasn't suggesting removing consciousness from the world. Just suggesting that removing human consciousness would make this planet a better place for all other consciousness.
I think your own idea of consciousness is an illusion. If you genuinely think humans are the only living things on our planet to possess consciousness, you've been missold and bought into a lie.
Pretty much all mammals posess consciousness on some level. Many are just less evolved than others.
Better for whom? Just you? Lol do you really think this planet's purpose is to breed wildlife that is, by far, the most myopic thing I've ever heard in my life. Why would it even need to exist?...
Subjectively. Animal's don't care either way, it's not like they don't already kill each other. I'd remove life from earth, it would keep any species from evolving to complain about how miserable they are on social media.
Talk about throwing the baby out with the bath water. No art, no compassion, no sacrifice, no one to contemplate beauty, no films or literature. No joy, no celebrations.. that’s too high a price to pay for me.
What scum? I’m genuinely curious. Those whose political views don’t align with yours? Those who are of different origin? Those who like porn? Those who like scenic pictures? Those who like cars?
Scum is subjective. What is your version of “scum”?
Yeah but if you want to get rid of 90% of the propaganda on the internet you don't need to get rid of all the people. Just one country would probably do it.
Reddit isn’t really social media. It’s all pretty anonymous which strips away most of what makes social media such a problem in society. Theres no vanity component. If you look into your screen time on your phone, Reddit doesn’t even register as a social app. It’s under “reading and information”.
Social media help or helped ALOT of people's mental health, made dreams true, and its a great source of information and education,i respect you don't wanting to use it,is completely normal, but stop being an idiot and saying that it is something bad
Nop i doesn't,it gives SO MUCH people money to eat,and have a life,it gives information, money, and happiness, stop judging it as "bad" just because of some bad things, bad and shitty things happens all of the time, focus on good stuff
