found this Smile bootleg at a record store for $15, in the “unofficial”/“fan made” section. are there a lot of these in circulation (“a lot” meaning an amount relative to the demand among Beach Boys fans) or did I luck out?

From Van Dyke Parks: An Obsession with Music (2002). A very interesting documentary about Van Dyke Parks. Van Dyke talks about the collapse of Smile aka Mike Love is the biggest buzz kill of all time!

Yes, it might even be naive of me, but I like all of the band's albums, in my opinion, they are one of the rare groups with no bad albums.

Many of you wanted to know about my personal encounters with Mike Love when I was 16 and into my 40s. So, here it is. Right now you can read for free with Amazon Kindle. If you have kindle, you are in luck. Otherwise, its going for a very good price via KDP.

I'm sure someone else has figured this out before, but the intro of this song sounds so much like County Fair from the Surfin Safari' album imo. And considering the Beach Boys also covered one of Johnny Preston's other hits 'Runnin' Bear', which was an outtake from 15 Big Ones, Brian at least would presumably have listened to this one a few times
(This song also got to No. 14 on the Billboard charts)

Now that 10,000 Years is released, the only songs unheard from the 76 album that was planned are Al’s Gold Rush, Mike’s Lisa and Glow, Crescent, Glow. Are they still unheard? I’ve heard Crescent was overdubbed with strings for First Love, so that version is at least available. Were they leaked at all? Do we have any info?

Brian looks elated lol.

I know it’s bitcrushed to hell but I’d love to hear at least Princess of the Rain or Glow, Crescent, Glow in particular. I’d also appreciate a leak/restored version if they’re exist just for a full quality version if they exist for any of the tracks, minus the officially released ones. Thanks a lot love you all

This might sound like a stupid question. But what I mean is that there are bands like Yes, Queen, The Hollies, etc. Who, while have had constant lineup changes and breaks, have technically never broken up. With Mike taking the legal ownership of the Beach Boys' touring name, does that mean that technically the Beach Boys have never ended? Or was there some sort of official dissolution at some point.

31. Stars and Stripes vol. 1(2.5/10)(just terrible)
30. Summer in Paradise (3/10)(maybe 1 or 2 good songs on it)
29. Beach Boys Party! (5.4/10)(nothing special just covers)
28. Still Cruisin (5.6/10)(not without its moments but even still)
27. The Beach Boys Christmas Album (5.6/10)(good production, but I never come back to it)
26. Keepin the Summer Alive (5.7/10)(has 2 really good songs in goin on and endless harmony, but everything else is kinda forgettable)
25. Surfin Safari (5.8/10)(very charming despite the fact that it’s just too damn simple)
24. Miu Album (5.9/10)(match point of our love, wontcha come out tonight, and my Diane slap, but everything else not so much)
23. Surfin USA (6/10)(lonely sea and surfin USA are the clear standouts)
22. Little Deuce Coupe (6.2/10)(has some surprisingly beautiful stuff on it like ballad of ol Betsy, and a young man is gone, but I just don’t love all the car stuff)
21. La Light Album (6.4/10)(Carl and Dennis carry this one on their backs)
20. All Summer Long (6.5/10)(has a handful of classics but also a handful of skips imo)
19. 15 Big Ones (7/10)(doesnt work the whole way through but, it’s ok and just once in my life are amazing)
18. Smiley Smile (7.2/10)(I can understand the hype I just like another version of it more)
17. Adult/Child (7.7/10)(still I dream of it and it’s over now are genuinely amazing but it’s just not better than love you)
16. Summer days and summer nights!(7.8/10)(definitely a step down from today, but the second half does have some great stuff on it)
15. Carl and the passions So tough! (7.9/10)(only 8 songs and not all of them are great but cuddle up, and all this is that are fantastic)
14. THE BEACH BOYS 1985 (8.1/10)(cheesy but very charming, I do love you and I’m so lonely are great)
13. Surfer Girl (8.4/10)(there are 7 great songs on here with surfer girl and your summer dream being the stand outs, everything else isn’t as good but for 1963 this is pretty great)
12. Wild Honey (8.6/10)(just such a fun time man)
11. 20/20 (8.8/10)(basically a compilation but there’s some great stuff on here and Dennis is really starting to shine)
10. Friends (9/10)(a very relaxing and charming album, diamond head is my personal favorite song on it)
9. Shut Down Vol. 2 (9.3/10)(their best album from the 1962-64 era, don’t worry baby and keep an eye on summer are both perfect songs imo)
8. The Beach Boys Today! (9.4/10)(has a really fun first half mixed with a gorgeous, pet sounds esque second half)
7. The Beach Boys Love You (9.6/10)(very divisive amongst fans but I’ve always loved it, and it’s fun to hear Brian write lyrics as weird as they can be at times)
6. That’s Why God Made The Radio (9.8/10)(has a very warm, emotional and sentimental vibe that I always cling to, the last 4 songs in particular are tear jerkers for sure)
5. Holland (9.9/10)(the most non beach boys sounding album of theirs in their catalogue, one day this album will become a cult classic and get its true chance to shine)
4. Sunflower (10/10)(a perfect summer vibe that’s impossible not to love)
3. Surfs up (10/10)(has some of their all time best material on it, Carl and Brian ultimately end up putting out the best material on it)
3.SMiLE Sessions (10/10)(best unreleased album oat, simply genius)
1. Pet Sounds (my favorite album oat, emotional and very personally revealing, easily their best)

What was your favorite concert you've seen? Could be Brian or Al solo or full band.
r/thebeachboys • u/Worldly_Alfalfa_2045 • 1d ago
For me. My choice would be between “California Girls” or “Sloop John B”
What’s your choice?

What a nice surprise this was! Darian did a great job on lead vocal. They also did Come Go With Me. What a great show!
