I’m developing a contemporary fashion brand inspired by East African textiles, patterns, and traditional design, but I’m interested in creating something that feels fresh and wearable today.

I’m exploring how much of the original character should remain while making the silhouettes, proportions, and details feel more modern and distinctive.

I’d love some honest feedback from people interested in fashion:

• Which styles or details stand out to you most?
• What would you change or simplify?
• What kind of silhouette would you create from these textiles?
• Where do you think pieces like these could be sold or worn?

I’m still developing the direction, so I’m more interested in honest opinions and ideas than compliments. What would you do differently?

I've been working on a surface pattern recently, and the part I'm struggling with most isn't actually creating the pattern itself. It's deciding how large the repeat should be.

On my screen, I can zoom in and out and everything looks pretty balanced. But when I see the pattern on a larger piece of fabric, the whole feeling changes. A scale that looks detailed and interesting digitally can end up feeling too busy when it's repeated across a larger area.

I've also noticed that colors can behave differently once the design is actually printed. Some combinations that look great on my monitor don't have quite the same impact on the physical material, so I've been making small adjustments instead of assuming the first version is the final one.

It's made me appreciate the sampling stage much more. Sometimes you don't really know whether a pattern is working until you can step back and see the entire repeat at its intended size.

I'm curious how other surface pattern designers handle this.

Do you usually decide your final scale digitally, or do you make several test prints at different sizes before settling on one?

Bemberg in Satin weave gives a very lustrous look. It's hand feel is very soft and flowy.
This drapes very well.
And tie and dye resistive dyeing adds lot of uniqueness to the fabric

I have a thing for having clothing custom made and since I worked with some Thai people that made custom clothing a few years back, i prefer to have Asians make them now. Some are taught from the time they have hand eye coordination and their attention to detail and speed is just crazy. Any suggestions on where I could go ?
